Hello, thought id start a thread on my van build ?<br>
<br>
The van was for sale on here a few months back, you might know it ? or even owned it at some point ?<br><br>I got it off ebay knowing it was a rot box, i had one intention,<br>
<br>
That was to 4x4 it !<br>
<br>
The van is absolutely bollocksed<img src="images/smilies/tard.gif" border="0" alt="" title="tard" smilieid="108" class="inlineimg"> rotten as a peach (as i expected)<br>
<br>
It had repairs over repairs over rot <img src="images/smilies/thumb.gif" border="0" alt="" title="thumb" smilieid="115" class="inlineimg"> so we didnt mess about getting it cut up ready for the mitsubishi evo 4 floor to go in <img src="images/smilies/smile3.gif" border="0" alt="" title="smile" smilieid="122" class="inlineimg"><br>
Never judge a book by its cover comes to mind <img src="images/smilies/roll4.gif" border="0" alt="" title="rolleyes" smilieid="126" class="inlineimg"><br>

It is bad in the places i wont be using, The A posts are the main thing, and they are good. We will be changing the sills and rear panel. Will put some more pictures up when photobucket sorts its head out ? got loads for you lads, stripped the evo 4 down today ready

After having a mk6 transit and replacing loads of panels and making 40 big patches that nova doesn't look too bad an it's easily fixed

I wouldn't go near that one - I've weighed in much, much, much cleaner shells... unless you're obsessed about having a genuine van... they aren't exactly common!

For photobucket reference, when replying to the thread and pasting the IMG (last link on PB), press the A/A button on the top left of the reply box before pasting :)

It does, but the downside is a rusty dust cloud floating round the garage, so it got chopped up outside for health and safety reasons:)

Don't know how I feel about this, I love that the Nova is being saved but seeing an Evo cut up like that just doesn't feel right, but I know it will become something brilliant.
Good luck with the build.

I know what you mean, but i looked for the worst one i could find and this was it, rotten sills, rotten inner sills, and the sills full of expanding foam ?
It was brush painted/rolled nato green, had dints on every panel and the rear quarter had been nudged causing the back door not to close properly, and the seats and interior were worn. all the bits i need are good, needs must etc...
I will sleep tonight after cutting this pile of shxt to bits lol

Sounds like a perfect candidate to be cut up lol. Look forward to seeing how this progresses.

What's left to do on the mk1 Astra?

What's left to do on the mk1 Astra?I was just waiting for some rear polybushes that i had forgot to order, they came this week so i will be back on with the mk1 van next week.
I started the nova as i was sick of seeing them both in my front garden, plus i can do bits here and there while doing my astra.

At the end of the day all cars are made from similiar metal and pressed to different shapes so chop away lol the best part of an evo is the engine and running gear and the front bumper

Nice work. It is obvious you have done this before! (Shame to see what looked to be a very original and decent ST205 die for your Astra, but great choice of engine).

Do you IVA these for road use, or are they track cars?

PAULDRIVER

Cheers mate, the toyota was an import with aftermarket fibreglass bumpers and sideskirts, i sold loads off it to fund the project, it was a needs must situation and i wanted something different, subaru s are good but loads have been done.

I will be using it on the road so will be getting it IVA tested if need be.

Ive technically replaced the rotten nova floor, it just happens to be an 4x4 evo 4.

The nova will be like brand new.

Well spotted Carl, its just sat on the jack for safety reasons, as when we let the jack down the front end did an endo, due to the floor not being welded, and no strength whatsoever in the structure, also the gearbox cradle wasnt bolted up, which will raise the back and lower the front of the engine.

We wanted to see if we had clearance at the front, as earlier in the day, we thought this wouldn t be happening:cry: we had an hour of "this wont work" "yes it will" "no it wont" " it should do" "what if it wont fit" and so on... !

So we bolted the engine in, on 2x of 3x mounts, and yes it fits ! :):):)

Now we have confirmation, we can take the motor back out, and weld the shell up 100% ;)

Sadly everything i've seen posted from OCP has turned up smashed to bits.

Ive had a few bits that "made it" over,

This is the first and hopefully last incident,

Ive ordered a new slam panel which will be sent when they receive this damaged one, it is in the post as we speak.

Ive ordered as well, an aftermarket lower front panel seen as 75% is done away with, no point using a GM one, its mainly for something to bolt the wings to.

Its slowed things down, as id ordered a new slam panel, they are waiting till the damaged one gets returned, then ship a new one with the slam panel which again has pissed me off as i have to wait.
I cant finish the front or back now  the front that is on, was used to line everything up and is being replaced with new.
It wont look standard for long,
The wide arch kit should be here tomorrow, so we can get on with cutting the rear arches and tubbing the inner arches,
That should give us something to do lol
Also waiting for the radiator, fan, and intercooler to arrive which we can get on with mounting up.
Space for everything is perfect and not as tight as we were dreading.

PAULDRIVER

Going to make our own using original wings.

That will be interesting to see how you do it. Always wanted to have a go at making some.

We are going to cut along the lines of the wing, and bring it out with extra metal.

Will put some pictures up later on.

Thats the way I would do it if I could weld lol I can only cut and reshape then make the infill pieces

Change of plan, after having another look and a think, we have decided to cut the wide wings down to as little as possible, and bond the wide bit to the originals .

So basically same as what we are doing on the rear, everything will line up nice, and look factory, (apart from the wide arches obviously) :thumb:

They are shaped better for what we want to do with them, which is cut more of the arch away for clearance:cry:

Most of the welding is done now, we need to get it on a spit so we can get to the sills better, then a few other small bits and it is done.

We will be fitting the dash and getting the steering column where it needs to be, it is just tacked in so we could steer it.

Forgot to say earlier the power steering pump pulley, sits right in the way of the drivers headlight so we decided to do away with the pump and convert the power rack to manual, id heard the VW boys had done it with a mk2 golf.
So i made some enquiries and it can be done no problem. (another few kgs off)

Cheers Baz, thanks mate. We finished some more welding today, and dropped the intercooler off for some modifying so we can mount the thing. Also managed to get the rad piped up. We need to modify the fuel filler neck so we can actually fill it up, we decided on locating it near the right rear strut tower inside the car.

We are going to wire the car up as well, so we no where everything sits on the inner wings and bulkhead, ecu, fusebox etc...
One last thing is the heater for inside the car, the nova and mitsubishi wont work due to being too big, so we used the same as my 4x4 mk1 astra van, which is a rover mini unit, and is perfect in size and kicks out some decent heat,
The propshaft should be back soon as well ;)
So without jinxing myself, i should have this running next week all being well

The standard cap is totally airtight, so unless i spill some it shouldn t stink of petrol.

I put it inside, so there is nothing going through the wide arch, plus no filler hole.

Amazingly fast commitment & welding looks really good. It can be difficult getting exact shapes into bumpers; would you consider spraying the intercooler dark grey?

PAULDRIVER
19-05-17, 10:48 AM
Yes the intercooler will be getting painted dark grey same as the car.

We sort of dropped a bollock with the bumper

We started with a different intercooler to this, the inlet pipes were in the middle and we cut it out perfect, 5mm all way round.

Then we realised it wouldnt work and needed altering loads because of the radiator i had made.

So i had to buy another intercooler the same size and this was it.

Im getting a carbon bumper made so it will be a bit tighter round the intercooler.

Just on with wiring the wiper motor, as for some reason we cant turn the thing off ?

That is the only problem after the complete strip down, which i dont think is too bad ?

It is doing our head in though, as it was working before it was stripped down !

All we have done is unplug it like everything else ?

A few more goes then im going to have to get an auto electrician on the scene !

That is a dirty low down move from photobucket, deciding to charge after all the years of "free" service.

Its pretty much fuxked every forum.

All those years of uploading photos, now down the drain, as i think only a few, will sit and re do all their threads and posts.

I unfortunately will not be one of them, fuxk that ! :(

I think im just going to bite the bullet and pay them:confused:

On the other hand...

Not much more to do with the van, got the propshaft back from shortening, we need to do a bit more bodywork,

then its going for some acid..... dipping !
