Reviving after 6 years.

Hi guys

I'm hopefully going to get my old sr going after 6 years of being in storage. I've never worked on a car thats been stood for such a long tine so how to i go about it?

Fluid change obviously but do i check the fuel tank before hand? For corrosion? etc

Also will the motor be ok? The car has been inside for the whole time its been dead but never started.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Remove the spark plugs and spray a bit wd40 and turn over by hand to make sure it's not partially seized, drain the tank and fill with fresh fuel, change the oil and filter and once it starts don't rev it until it's warmed up a bit

Brake fluid definitely needs refreshing. Make sure brake caliper pistons aren't seized.
If you go to spray WD40 in the bores, let it sit for a day before rotating the crank manually.
New spark plugs, fresh battery and you should be good to go.
Oh and check the tyres - chances are they are cracked from sitting a prolonged period.

Suspension damper seals might be easily irritable after all that time, take it easy for the first hundred or so miles after doing the fluids etc

I rebuilt and started one of my minis after it lay 10 years, 5 years of which were outside. I checked it would turn by hand, then tried starting it just to get it going. Took some fresh fuel mixed with the old to get it going but I wanted it warm so I could drain all the old oil. Once the car was put back on the road and serviced (new radiator etc etc), drove perfectly.

The one thing I would do is change the cambelt and water pump as it would have gone brittle having sat in the Same position all this time and the last thing you want is that snapping

I recently had an xe that sat for 17 years... I checked it by hand, put a bit of oil down the bores and she fired straight up! (I did have to run it on easy start and the fuel pump had seized though lol)

When you are ready to start the engine, pull the king lead off of the distributor cap. When you turn the key the engine will just spin over, therefore won't reach any rpm, but will make sure the oil gets to the top end of the engine before it starts. Will protect the top end of the engine.

Don't forget to remove the spark plugs before cranking over. Saves the big end and crankshaft bearing shells during low oil pressure running.
