Well, I've started with such a bold statement I'd better follow it through.
With the chassis work commencing I thought it would be a good time to start a thread for those who arnt on Facebook on the build of my drag Nova, apart from 1/4 mile racing I'm also going to make a separate attempt to crack 200mph!
On paper we've got this sorted
Power : 1000 plus
Weight : 800kg est
Engine is a z22ler, what's that I hear? It's basically a z20let/h/r engine but using a z22xe block and crank, making it a 2.2ltr z20 engine.
Massive amounts of cash put into this and it should handle the power, engine is ready to be built, more on this later if anyone's interested.

This is a mock up engine pictured trying the turbo/manifold setup on for size
Body, there's still some Nova metalwork left, but a lot removed and caged, the cage will tag to 8.5 plus it's getting a driver cell which other than a few floor bars almost gets it to a 7.5 tag.
Essential but very expensive !
Currently Ben Speechley (red nova track car I'm sure your aware of) is doing all the fab work, busy removing a roll cage I had fitted but was not happy with, plus removing a bit more.

Now stripped back he can start putting metal work in there
One piece front end weighs just 12kg and makes access to everything much easier

800kg seems on the high side, is that due to the amount of tube?
I like the one-piece front, where did you get that from?
I'm leaving a bit of room for error, there's a lot of gear going on there mind.
Previously the car was 760kg with f28 & clet stripped out, I'd hazard a guess that the amount of material removed has been replaced with tube but weight savings are made elsewhere also.
If I ever want to compete I'd need to get it up to 900kg believe it or not
One piece front end came all the way from Slovakia, postage cost more than the part annoyingly.

I deliberately said fastest and not quickest, Eljans car is seriously impressive and I've got huge respect for him, but I'm not building a car to come 2nd.

Once Ben has done all the cage, parachute mount, cradle, wishbones, back axle, engine mounts......
It will come home and I can start putting parts on it, I've got probably 80% of the parts to build the thing.

While i admire your optimisn theres a bit more to it then just brute force horsepower an weight.
Total frontal mass, drag coeficiency, in gear accerleration, final drive ratio etc etc
I want that front end!!!

Drag Co I've done as much as I can really, closed front end, smooth as possible, slightly pointed.

In gear acceleration, will have to wait and see how it acts, I've got pretty much the best boost controller there is, it uses a Co2 tank to apply pressure to the top of my wastegate instead of the exhaust pressure doing it, the controller then applies or removes pressure whenever it's calibrated to do it, I can offset boost pressure in any gear at any time against anything I want really, lateral G force, GPS position, throttle position, air fuel ratio but I think I'll be using undriven wheel speed, so the more ground speed my back wheel sees the more boost it applies, amazing bit of kit called AMS2000.

Final drive ratio I have a choice, there's plenty available in the m32's, currently it has the Corsa Vxr FD of 4.18 which means if I was on a 225/40/18 tyre with 9000rpm limit I'd be able to hit 160mph on the dot in 4th gear using my current gear set, however I'm sending the box back to get an additional 2 gears fitted, I know 5th gear will see me at 178mph but the ratio of 6 is yet to be decided.
However if I fit a final drive from the smaller Diesel engine m32 which is a 3.35 iirc that would see me do 200mph on my current setup and 222mph with the 5th gear and who knows with 6th, of course this is all theoretical and not taking any resistance into account but the numbers look like it can be done.
I managed 169 mph with 250hp on an f28, I'd hope 4 times the power would help a little

Using a handy online calculator if I hazard a guess of a nova having a drag Co off 0.6 (that's the same as some buses) a frontal area 20 sq/ft a weight of 800kg to do 200mph I would need 653bhp

Sound mate you should get 200 mph no probs with the right gears and wheel size .
Roof chop isn't really an option, It would stop me entering most competitions and my head isn't far from the roof now even with the seat down low

I had a look at this in Ben's workshop with the old cage in. Its in good hands now that's for sure.

I'd like to say yes but only if I can afford it, so probably not [emoji17] there's still an awful lot to spend.
I had a fairly descent budget but absolutely blew it to pieces by purchasing the electronics, BUT other than a Power Distribution Module I've got them all, entire engine build is paid for and parts are there ready to be assembled.

It is an m32, with a 4 speed dog kit and Gripper diff, still uses OEM input shaft and final drive.

No idea how this is achieved, can you not just get a custom final drive like a 3.1?

Erm, I suppose just putting it all together, got most of the parts just not sure how or where anything is going to be positioned.
Once the shell is home I'll do a dry build, I think I'll install a spare engine and see if I can get it up and running myself on the MoTec, it's something I want to learn anyway.

I love raychem cable and heat shrink, soooo damn flexible and crazy strong
It is seriously good stuff, DR-25 heat shrink, ridiculously priced, as is anything mil spec to be fair.
Yes I've got Pace dry sump kit but possibly changing for a Peterson system, I'm having a one off billet sump pan made which will
Incorporate a bottom end girdle for the engine, a bit more strength won't harm.
I'm also after a different style of dry sump pump, one which allows an auxiliary pump to be driven off the rear.

I'm using a mechanical fuel pump from Aeromotive to keep up with fuel demand and also to minimise electrical circuits.

Here you can see the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, a 100 micron filter for pre pump and a 40 micron filter for pre rail
Although I have just bought a 10 micron System One filter which I'll probably use pre fuel rails instead

Fuel lines are Teflon coated and I'm using the following sizes
-12an from tank to pre pump filter
-12an from pre filter to pump
-10an from pump to post filter
-10an from post filter to fuel rail
-10an from rail to reg
-10an from reg to tank
May seem a bit big but those are specs from Aeromotive to prevent cavitation on the pump.
Fuel injectors I have 2 sets of ID2000 and a set of ID1000, I think initially I'll use 4x1000 & 4x2000's, as long as these cope with the quantity of ethanol , there's always the option of adding a 9th injector pre throttle body or pre turbo.

I got a bunch of fittings from Torques, real nice stuff for the price however I've not tried using them yet and if there's any doubt to there quality or ability I'll be shooting a message over to Goodridge or Brown & Miller.

That could well be the way when the time comes, I'm planning on having Wiggins clamps on the fittings anyway but I'd rather not have something with potential to fail.

Front tyres are Mickey Thompson ET Drag 26" tall 10" wide and mount on a 15x10 Schmidt th line, and the rears are 15x3.6" m&h.

This thing will be crazy when its done.
There 3 piece split rims so I can make them any width or offset I like by changing the barrels and lips.
It's a big old tyre to fit in a nova arch, just think how big a 17" wheel is on a nova, now imagine another 9" on top of that and that's not to mention the width [emoji47]

Bruntingthorpe would be the best bet, I won't be doing a 200mph run on the drag slicks, I'd use something like an 18" wheel and road tyre

Will you be using tyre warmers then if using road tyres as they'll need to be pretty sticky I reckon to keep you in a straight line.
I cant say Im planning on tyre warmers, a few test runs will get the tyres upto temp im more concerned about stability, im planning on making the rear wheels the same track as the front to help, instead of the common drag stance that see a much wider track at the front only.
Glad to see a proper thread for this rather than just on facebook, more updates needed!!

From what I can find those right there are the very first set of +2mm valves for a z20.
Solid lifters, double valve springs, top secret seats, custom cams and port work
Manifold you can see here, big runner, 60mm wastegate priority, v-band real nice bit of kit

Wastegate is Tial V60-D, specially designed to be used with a co2 controlled boost control system

Only time I would need it would be to help it spool low down, but I'm looking into applications we're people have an injector firing fuel into the turbine compressor to do this, sounds crazy but it been done.

Yea also seen that done . Was going to ask you is you had looked at piston ring end gap widths . My new motor has wossner pistons in it and been told by the lad whos rebuilding it for me that first ring is going to need altering .

I've not, I leave all that to Vauxpro who are building my engine, there's certain things I leave to those who know and don't get involved with.

I'd like to try and get 1000 at the wheels, but that equates to roughly 1150bhp, possible but will see.
Truthfully we know the power output may be too high, making the power is easy, controlling it is a whole other game.

There's a few FWD boosted cars that make upwards of 900BHP Civics & alike; they actually look more stable in a straight line than the RWD runners, just need a big upper body to hold it!
I guess the standard inner CVs then astra big block outers for the drivetrain? Some sort of hybrid shafts cut sleeved welded to suit?

Plenty civics running 1000+ now, they can get most there parts off the shelf though.
We are widening the track a bit, using shafts and cvs from a mk5 sri turbo, the fit the m32 and my big block hubs but I know they won't last 5 minutes, some heavy duty stuff will be designed, limiting factor is the nova hub carrier, unless we make some fancy billet items, Vauxpro can take care of that though.

I've been buying these parts for 3 yr now, I refuse to get anything on finance or go into debt for it.
Could easily take another couple of year to complete.
Just off the top of my head I need a PDM & keypad £2.5k, new oil system £2.5k, there's a billet sump pan & girdle, billet intake, billet rear hubs, billet front hubs and carriers £€$[emoji857]

Ben has had the SFI guy out to look at the car and discuss its use and how the cage should be built to comply.

Ben got the SFI guy out last week to discuss and confirm certain parts of the cage to ensure it can be tagged to 8.5.
So now he's been I got a bunch of pics sent through today, I'm excited to say the least, feels like some real progress and you can see just how good Bens work is.

Stu has a very long waiting list, I went up to see him a while back to discuss (been there many times before) and he was seriously just a dick, like I was wasting his time, like why would I not want to put a 8.5 cage in a 1000hp Vauxhall Nova [emoji23] he probably thinks I'm on glue.

I'm leaving a bit of room for error, there's a lot of gear going on there mind.
Previously the car was 760kg with f28 & clet stripped out, I'd hazard a guess that the amount of material removed has been replaced with tube but weight savings are made elsewhere also.
If I ever want to compete I'd need to get it up to 900kg believe it or not
One piece front end came all the way from Slovakia, postage cost more than the part annoyingly.

Thanks Scott, previously the engine was fully forged and ready for 500hp but never got anything other than a hybrid KKK fitted, it did well though, in a stripped out car it did the 1/4 in 12.8@115mph at York Raceway, sure there's a couple vids on YouTube if you search for heds28.
Popped to Bens last night (5.5hr round trip [emoji37]) to sit in the car and measure up for the door bars and seat position
Cage looks great in the flesh, we threw some ideas around, well I come out with some crazy ideas and Ben knocks me back down with some realistic facts but it will all work out in the end.
Once main part of cage is fully welded up he's moving onto the front subframe, this I'm very much looking forward to, one thing I want to be able to do is get the complete engine and box out in under 5 mins [emoji41]

Cage will be tagged to 8.5 sec but on top of this he's adding a driver cell, just for a bit extra safety, next step up from 8.5 is 7.5-8.49 which looks pretty much like a Pro-mod cage and would involve cutting the floor pan out, if I ever got to the point it did 8.5 I think I'd be looking at starting on another car with a lot more safety cos that shit is shifting!

Safety cell looks great. Does it not need to steer at all?
It won't have great deal of lock but we are yet to add more width to front track and some castor which will give a bit more room for wheel/tyre movement.

Had a bit of downtime at work so made a start on some of the electronics.
Been making the initial part of the loom for a while now, got a connection to Ecu and some flying tails with a comms port and CAN connection.
Rigged up a fused 12v supply, managed to get the Ecu talking to the laptop and even calibrated both the air temp and coolant temp sensors, got the data live on the screen so happy with that, it's certainly a start to what's going to be probably the hardest part of the build for me.

However there is a lot more to it than just the Ecu, all these devices need wired in and have there own associated inputs and outputs, luckily the devices talk to each other over CanBus which is a simple two wire circuit between each device.

I know I know, CAN stands for Controller Area Network. The bus is what you use after a night on the piss. lol
Why you saying no BUS?
A bus (including the kind you get on after a night on the piss) is simply something that carries something from one place to another.
The network is using a BUS to carry information, a twisted pair of wire.

Its a lot simpler if the Dash will read direct from the ECU from a simple comms port.
The Ecu, dash, expander and CDI unit can all talk to each other over Canbus, it's fairly simple.
I'm hoping by the time I come to need it the AMS boost controller will have the ability to talk to the MoTec also.

Well it's definitely something I'd like to learn more about, if you know of any good online sources? one thing I'd very much like is to be able to get the AMS boost controller to read the CAN between the MoTec devices and pull the data from there, NLR who make the AMS say the capability is there to use CAN but it's not been fully implemented yet.

I found very little online myself, even looked for online courses I could do.
NLR are American based, he's a very clever guy from what I've seen but I think the code writing he has someone else who does it, I could certainly ask him but when I last asked when CAN would be available he said there about to roll out V4 software update then CAN is one of the next things to look into.
Would be great if the AMS could view all the sensor information from the ECU over 2 wires instead of extra wires for every sensor.

Just stalked the kit you have from MOTEC and their documents, seems they are well setup for CAN (makes sense really) just a little vague as to how their software sets it up, but its not hard to spy on the network if you fancy dropping another £250 on a KVASER CAN-USB interface from sweden (https://www.kvaser.com/product/kvaser-leaf-light-hs-v2/), then you have a very useful tool for watching whats going on in there to make NLR's job way easier :D

The only caveat I'd put on the MOTEC docs is that they say you need a 100ohm resistor between CAN H and CAN L, but 120ohm is the "norm" for very stable operation.
How does that work then?

Yeh I've seen the Haltech and racepak stuff use al separate little modules to make up a network, why I'm not too sure, seems a long way to do things.
Again my CAN knowledge is basic, but I believe as long as you can get the devices talking the same language at the same speed on the same network you can get anything to talk, it's finding those details that's a bit tricky.

i read the manual for that and it implied you can drive some outputs over CAN too.
niek, you're right that not all CAN is equal, as there are speeds, addresses, data layouts and message lengths at hand, but with the sniffing tools like kvaser you can work it out fairly fast, or use the Internet as many are well geeked lol

Hopefully you don't need that cage when it's needed but hats off to the guy who's making it, looks a fantastic job indeed.
The cage is or will be tagged to 8.5 but the drivers cell is an addition and not necessarily required but it's almost a half way between an 8.5 & a 7.5.
I continue to be even more impressed every time I receive some pictures.

Drivers cell is now complete as well as the whole main front cage, next step is to knock off the spot welds holding it in place and dropping the cage out of the back to fully weld round the tubes

My friend has his own carbon fibre shop he did alot for ginetta racing and that would look so nice in carbon fibre i wont to make one is there away of a mould or the place to buy the piece from.
Obviously if its your mould we would pay to use it and give you a free carbon one also.

It was made by a company in Europe and its 1 of 5 I believe, there's 2 in the U.K. I imported both of them and the other went to a friend.

nice work. is the 2.2 block open deck? do you have much strengthening done to it? i am getting a forged engine built this year and running a Gtx3076r but trying to decide if i should use a z20leh block and wedge it or use a c20xe block as its closed deck then just get under piston oil jets fitted.

Yes it's open deck but wedges have been installed to strengthen it.
The z20let block is stronger and a lot cheaper than the leh but the c20 being closed deck would certainly be stronger again.

The later block are cast from CGI material, the bores do not wear as badly as the XE/CLET block so wedging a later open deck or a closed deck XEV block would be the better option.

A recent promotion at work may increase my income but it also increases the amount of time and effort I spend there, catch 22 really but once it's home from Hangar 30 I can start putting some bits on it so at least it will look like we are getting somewhere.

What's the reasoning behind the wheelie bar? Will you be using it to preload the front suspension? Ie shift the center of gravity forward and over the front wheels for better traction?

It's technically not a wheelie bar of course but it will stop the back end squatting down which in turn will load up the front like you say.
May not be required but I'd rather have provisions for it done now.

No the gears are custom cut anyway I can choose what I want on 4th & 5th to work with my tyre size and get the speed I need.

Exactly - that and aero. Think about Mclaren F1; that only had 650HP but could reach 243MPH.
That MK2 Astra is now 900BHP & topping out in 6th on an F28 as I understand it; remarkable for an ecotech!

Generally people really dislike such input for two reasons:-
1] Who the f is this guy & what would he know?
2] The work is now done & f redoing it
So I'll just speak from real world experience.
I've broken a VERY similar RJ arrangement this year, under load at just 70MPH; granted it was during braking, but if you're pushing 200MPH this would not be anyway strong enough imo.
I now run these 3/4" bearings & have made sure the load runs through the round section of the bearing, as they were intended when designed. (Can only report good things).

Coated parts look ace; you might consider vertical bolts dropped in from the top (should the worst ever happen).
That turbo & manifold should be good for huge horsepower; but the inlet is to come..? Will the corner weights be alright with you & all the tube surrounding on the drivers side?

M32 would be same for on a red top.
Main reasons being older heads are getting hard to find and old blocks are a softer material they wear a lot quicker.
