Hey all,
I was trying to work out how much weight I can shift from striping out as much as possible. And what sort of kg I would end up with. I know it depends on how far you go with it and I was wondering if you guys know how much your motors weigh and how/where you weighed it. i.e. Local weigh bridge somewhere.
Intrigued is all [emoji5]

As you've said it all depends how far you want to go. If it's a track car I'd just strip everything out tbh.
if mine is over 800kg when finished I'll be severely disappointed.

A Nova doesn't exactly weigh that much to start with, so compared to more modern cars stripping out weight can have mixed results. It all starts well with taking out the rear setas losing around 20kilos, but then you'll soon find its all becomes small gains, or rather losses of weight. But those small amounts do all add up. You have to decide how far do you want to go, lose carpets, sound deading stuff, stereo, remove unnecessary wiring etc. What level of comfort do you need from the car? and if you cut out brackets and such, will you regret it afterwards?
And it comes to the point where you have to spend money to lose more weight, fibreglass/carbon panels, lightweight battery, slimline rad fan, polycarb windows, light wheels/brakes. Losing weight starts free and can end up being very expensive!
I've taken about 50kilos out of mine from a mix of taking stuff out and replacing bits, no idea what weight I started with though.

Thanks Paul.
I would like to get the car to around 750kg. Will be stripping out the interior, making custom door cards removing the headlining and sound deadening. Any thoughts if that's realistic and was wondering if anyone has gone much lighter still and if so by how much?
Thanks all

If I remember right I think the Gsi weighs around the 860kg in standard form. Also how much weight would you expect to shift from the poly carb Windows? [emoji1303]

I could be wrong but isn't novarally's circa 600kg? Could be thinking of a different one. I think polycarb is like half the weight of glass. I was surprised how heavy the sound deadening was.
yeah a gsi is 860, so heaps of weight to come out. For starters the sunroof saves like 20kg anyway.

Novarally's is nearer 530 IIRC
750 should be a cake walk in a track car. I'm gunning for 700kg in a stage rally car which will be less than easy considering the cage, seats, extinguishers etc. that have to be added.

Ok nice that's good to hear. I have heard the windows are half the weight of the glass too. I just as yet have no idea how much the Windows themselves weigh and so how worth it in terms of money/weight it would actually be.
Anyone do this?

Is yours a GSi then? if it is, while of course you can do what you like with your own car, they are rare and worth a lot these days so thats something to keep in mind when deciding what to do with it.

No don't panic Iol I agree it would be a travesty. I'm looking at a 1.2 merit I just mentioned the weight of the gsi assuming it would be the heaviest in the range and a good point of reference.

Took my rear bumper off today. Think that weighs more than an entire Nova lol

Well in that case yours might be as much as 100kilos lighter than a gsi already, depending on spec/if its standard at the moment.
A Gte kerb weight is 820kg & the old 8v was 100bhp with 99lbs ft of torque works out about 120 bhp per ton unless your a big fat coont
& have a fat bird as a co pilot then all the calculations are screwed lol

Novas are the best at losing weight by themselves, rust and rot always help lol

No it doesn't. Rust is normally heavy due to it retaining water.
830 KG with half a tank of fuel. Stripped full triangulated cage fibreglass buckets and bonnet, 2.0 and F20

A good way to loose extra weight in a caged up track car that no one ever mentions is to drill a series of holes in the frame work with a hole saw.
I plan to do something similar with a dimple die behind all the interior panels.

I save a little extra by running a few litres less oil.

Oils over rated anyway it's just a gimmick to make people waste money like condoms and soap
