View Full Version : Who thinks a MINI is the same car as a mini?
Seriously this site is so calm compared to Classic mini forums.
There is the ongoing debate about whether BMW MINIs are the same car as Minis (1959-2000), seriously there people who believe it is the same car.
Lately debates have started again as BMW owners keep bombing the classic forums with pictures of there MINIs on every thread someone puts up with original minis.
In the British mini owners club show a BMW bought that morning won best car. Seriously, not a joke. After all the original car owners restorations etc what a kick in the teeth.
I personally cannot see how anyone can think it's the same car. They took the name of a model, made that the make (MINI) and borrowed a few styling cues for sales reasons but that is it.

The new Mini is the size of a small country. Hardly the same car!
My missus has been into classic Minis for ages and has a thing or two to say about BMW Minis haha. All the big shows and runs (e.g. London to Brighton) is full of them now, so I believe they're part of the scene now.
I left our local mini club 12 years ago as there were more BMWs than actual minis, also I dont' think they need tlc.
One good thing though, My 1960 was sold to me as the family that had owned it when new were so angry at it being put being BMWs in a display for a classic mini club, they decided to sell.

Nothing alike at all...for a start there's no way on God's earth I would use a Mini as a daily driver lol
In all seriousness though I do like the MINI if you take it for what is is, although that was before all the new ridiculous variations and even the newest shape came out. But no comparison to the original and it seems the Mini is no where near as popular as it ought to be...probably from the existence of the MINI
I'd love a Mini van though, they are so
My lovely wife has a BMW Mini, handles well, goes ok, drinks oil for no real reason.
Nothing whatsoever like an original mini, in that it starts.
The BMW Mini is nothing like a proper Mini, it's a name only.
That is all!!!

My parents both had new 1275gt minis back in there youth and still go on about how much fun they had, both are now there 70's ;)
A guy I work with has a 2013 bmw Mini Cooper works and loves it, I've been out in it and it's a nice car don't get me wrong but it a bmw engine with a mini name, not a mini when it's really a midi lol
Both types are shite. Sorted

Disagree, we need a referendum lol
Minis are shit from 1959 to 2016
Thanks, well the first ideas for a Nova were taken from a mini. But you need to drive one to see just how much fun they are. A go cart where 60 mph seems like 100.
My 1st car was a mini 30, loved that little think will be getting another classic shape in the future defiantly!!
parents had a bmw mini but I agree with most on here there awful and nothing like a mini

Dunno if I'd say it's awful, it does handle well, but it's defo not on a par with the original.
I've drove the bmw abit, and tbh I'd say the new corsa handled better,
tbh I think I'm just bias towards the classic and think bmw have ruined the image of the name mini.

I knew a guy about 15 years ago that had a 1.0 mini about the time I had my old Sr nova and on back roads I couldn't keep up with him at all, I'd done plenty of work on getting the handling right on mine and his was pretty much stars and I had no chance lol
Neither the old or new ones are my cup of tea, never owned one but had a ride in a few (old and new), didn't like them. I was going to say I like big cars, but then that includes the BMW lol
I can understand both sides of the argument - the original mini is a classic icon. You have to hand it to BMW for carrying on the name and bringing it up to modern standards though. It could have been a lot worse, I mean look at the Corsa B compared to the Nova/Corsa A lol

Mini's have the old cool value, modern maxi's really don't.
So far everyone is in agreement that they are not the same car. Even the Corsa E is more related to the Nova than the BMW mini and real mini but seriously, some people really seem to believe it is the same car, I just cannot understand that at all!
You mean they think it's the same pressings for parts etc? They are tards.
As for the same ethos, no.
Still, both are shite :p
It's just a new style scaled up version. It was never build to be a copy. It was a new take on the old car.

And it's a logical idea unlike the new viva lol
And it's a logical idea unlike the new viva lol
yes and no...
At the very least, if you squinted, the new Mini looks akin to the old one. Much like the New 500 looks akin to the old one. But the New Viva looks fuck all like the old one lol

It won 'best car' not 'best mini produced between 1959 and 2000'.
Cooper s supercharged is a very quick car
1275 mini is embarrassingly slow nowadays
minis are still very common on the ovals

Haha yeah there's a guy from Ireland that comes over to Barford now and again, quite an old guy and he doesn't seem keen to get stuck in the middle of the younger lads bashing each other about but he drives well all the same! The car is actually in good condition and still has a windscreen in it too!
