View Full Version : Steering Column Shear bolt removal.
With the dash fitted. Cant get my drill in the gap, thinking if i belt sand the head off... Tried hammer and chiseling to try and turn it but it doesn't want to move....
Any tips?
I used a hammer and sharp chisel,
if you sand the head off you've still got to try and remove the rest of the bolt

Mine came out with a punch and a chisel, could weld a nut on if out the car or dash out
Punch and chisel the edge of it round mate, that's what I did!!

are you turning it the right way?
If i grind the head off, then the thread bit should be lose as the tension is gone... Well in theory..
i started to hit it with a hammer and chisel, i'll try again tonight making sure i hit it the right way.
Mig a 13mm nut on it. Spot the inner.
Again dash is in. Not much room to get a torch in there, plus fire risk.

Punch and chisel. I have got them off with mole grips a few times before.

Mole grips...........small?
Good ones!
Always used a narrow chisel... :thumb:
No need for any of that roughness.simply put a nut on the back and tighten up very tight.it loosens it so then finish with mole grips.easy as that.

No roughness if you have surgeon's hands like mine...lol

Hhhmm didn't think of that, i'll try that too.
I tried mole grips on the round bit. Couldn't get any movement/kept slipping off. Even with chisel makes on it..lol
Belt sanded the top off took 2mins, the thread then just unscrewed.
