View Full Version : RC cars
Anyone into RC cars? I've just bought one and it's great, can't be bothered to fix the Nova anymore lol
Same here lol im just building a team associated b44.2
What you got?
any sensible suggestions for offroad buggy type things.
I had an HPI Savage which was great fun but I'm assuming electric is the way to go these days etc, and it rolling when cornering was mildly irritating

I have cars and boats. :) Tried the nitros, but the electric is my way. Now the new one is Kyosho Inferno 1:8 Buggy, with 6S. :)

Nitro is only good if you have somewhere open where no one will moan at you about the noise!
Electric for me as well although I'm part of the committee for the local Touring car club. I've been racing for about 20 years now (god that makes me sound and feel OLD!).
Here is a short video from the start of the B Final a few weeks ago, Yellow, Black and White car is mine starting 2nd. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnHvDcFi-mY
I'll dig out some pictures of my Touring cars, think it totals 4 1/10th Touring, 1 Tamiya M05 and for fun an Associated T3 truck.
Current Touring car, a VBC Wildfire D06, running a Dodge Dart shell in Power Maxed livery.

Driven hard both of them. Mini is good fun, we had setup class rules that only certain motors and tyres were allowed, resulting in good close racing.
I picked up this second hand at the weekend, it's a HPI E Firestorm Flux, waterproof electrics and brushless motor. Goes well on 2S batteries, 3S must be insane. Would recommend it Stuart. Did consider an Associated T4 but believe they're a little bit outdated now?
Broke it within 24 hours and just fitted a new spur gear and front shock mount, fail.
Hooked, just trying to not spend too much money on them lol

3S would be good, but 6S would be better, only issue then is that you'll need a bigger ESC to take the current. What motor are you running in that Iain?
It's all standard, HPI MMH-4000, 4000kv motor. HPI EMH-2S ESC which can take up to 3S.
I've got a losi nitro eight, used to race it but it's died out down here like everything else in the south west.
and I blew the engine up and didn't want to fork out £300 to replace it, lol

I repaired mine just before xmas after 10 years of it using it. Had it working for about a week and had a heavy crash. Snapped the manifold and not bothered fixing it again lol
I remember that, one day I get a video of you zooming around at work, next day 'Broken' and never heard about it since lol

That's not being a full on Geek.....
4000Kv, what does that work out in "turns" ie 10.5, 4.5 etc?
Apparently no kv/turn mapping or correlation so dunno! It's a nice speed.

Lower the number the faster it goes! I know a couple of the lads up the club have Stampedes running 4.5 and 3s or 4s, kept breaking drive shafts!
Ive got an HPI WR8.
The WR8 with 3S battery and 19T pinion does 60.3mph on the GPS speed monitor. Even belted slick race tyres struggle for traction.

My Tamiya TA-04 Touring car with Team Orion Brushless ESC and 4200KV Motor running on 2S batteries due to space on chassis lol Also got a flat floor with front splitter and rear diffuser to go on to give better handling. ;)

Got various other vintage Tamiya cars from my youth but only recently started running any again.
Lower the number the faster it goes! I know a couple of the lads up the club have Stampedes running 4.5 and 3s or 4s, kept breaking drive shafts!
I thought with LiPo/brushless it was the higher the kv number the faster it goes as its effectively rpm/volt so 10k rpm/volt is faster than 5k rpm/volt... Could be wrong lol
Ian, that beetle looks epic, would love to tear up the beaches with something like that
That's inspired me to get my old Tamiya Monster Beetle QD from my parents, gotta be 15 years old now lol
Some damn nice cars in here!
il put pics of mine up when its finished.just need motor and electrics. Then to fit tyres and the bodyshell.

Cheers :) The beach is my favourite place to run it but last time it came back caked in wet sand so needed a full tear down, going to wait for a dryer day now lol

Got one of them as well but after restoring it a few years ago I am scared to abuse it now so mostly sits on the shelf, doesn't take abuse as well as the Blitzer.

Also have a Hornet, Clod Buster, TA02 Pre-Runner and M01 Mini Cooper (all vintage 80's /90's)
Just sold a couple of others to fund the upgrades on the Blitzer. I only got back in to it recently becuase my nephew wanted me to start taking him out with his Lunchbox.
Ah that's a proper Monster Beetle, my QuickDrive one is meant for kids and not much you can do in terms of customising. Black chassis instead of red.

Ah yeah I know what you mean. You can buy a Re-release Monster Beetle now but they never improved any of the weak bits like the gearbox so you still can't really make them quick and by all accounts some of the detailing has been lost on the body.

You are right Stuart, higher rpm the faster it will go, however getting a motor with a lower turn number should give a higher rpm.
I'm used to brushed motors, so sometimes come out with brushed motor terms.
With lipos it's the burst you have to look at. Running 2s in the touring car I have a mix of burst levels. Some being 30c, the crappy ones, the good ones have a burst of up to 130c. The difference can be as much a 2 or 3 laps on track. Or a few amps in power wise.
The c thing is great. We were looking at that for making a real electric car lol some have a lower 1c output, but can burst crazy levels (and charge crazy fast too)
hmm, need to look at buggies now, damn you all
Just browsing for some spare rear wheels and road tyres for my HPI to try and save the knobblies a bit.
Also trying to stop the dog chomping on it while on walks.
I miss my monster beetle. :(
Likely to be poo but are they worth a punt? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fast-Electric-RC-Brushless-Buggy-Off-Road-1-18-Radio-Remote-Control-Car-4x4-4WD-/271298647311?var=&hash=item3f2aa8d50f:m:mwhAyvN4rvUErt1T3rEKlfw
Id find a 1/10 scale Stu
Can get cheaper buggies than mine with good parts support and brushless from the factory.

all of mine are dead or just got dust all over them lol
Rc cars are nuts with the speed they can achieve! I remember about 20 years ago my mate had a petrol one and it was mental! It was so fast I couldn't control it! My mate ripped up the park grass and all the dog shit as well lol

^ this made me laugh. All the dog shit as well lol
i remember a mate of mine when i was a kid came out with his all singing dancing mardave petrol rc car with a metal/alloy bodied mini shell, at the time i had my venessas lunch box, he was running rings around me until he hit the kerb and as he was grinding down the kerb it burst into flames, i went in and put mine on charge and thought hmmm petrol = dangerlol
Yeh plenty dog shit back then but sadly not as much shit nowadays as its mostly bagged up! lollol

When I was on the jov stand, used to run on the road. Had a mini drag race with its full sized counterpart!
This year I think I'll be taking my T3, I know a few of the guys on the VxDC stand will have their Tamiya lunchboxes out to play so will go for a run with them. Plus they have a massive mound on the stand too. Great for jumps!

If I can find them I have about 5 Tamiya TL-01 cars complete not used in years and loads of spares!
Il dig them out of the garage and make a for sale thread if anyone would be interested?
All I can think about is buying them all, setting up a course around the driveway and a garage and hosting a race with all my mates (OK there may be a few spare cars lol)

I'll have a word with some of the lads at the club. although there is a Vintage Tamiya race series which I think the TL-01 would fit into but cant remember the details.
Just grabbed this from my parents, shame it's not a proper hobby Beetle and not the toy quick drive one!

I have seen a couple of them run, they seem very good!
Not my cup of tea though, you need a big open space and I would be worried about doing big damage to anything I hit!
Losi's are very well put together and replacement parts are cheap.
I only smashed mine up a couple of times racing and had it fixed on the day normally, as people had spares or I did at the track,
trying to find pictures of mine believe I've got one on photobucket, it's not a 1/5th thou lol. My mates got a hpi Baja that's big
I had a 1:5 King Motors 002 thing a couple of years back. An HPi Baja copy.
They are decent enough, when fitted with a few hop-up's (old RC term!).
I still bent the chassis like a banana, from jumping it on a BMX track, mind.
