View Full Version : prs c20let trackday project..
yes, another Dutch nova project lol
first my nova history:
back in 2009 I build my first sleeper nova mk1. c20xe, f18cr, kw suspension ect. had to sell it because of buying a c20let for my astra mk3 gsi :)
http://myalbum.com/photo/eQQv5QOQqlfM/720.jpg
so I build my Astra c20let and drove it as a daily for about 1,5 years and then came across another (red) mk1 nova. the plan was to build a budget daily race car in in a few months because the c20let was quite expensive to drive :(. finally it took 4 years and a lot more money than planned to build the nova lol. replaced both rear quarters and grinded everything out of it! the goal was sub 700kg with an xe in it :d.
before it even had a test drive, It had been painted it 4 different colours lol
1st colour: ral 7016
http://myalbum.com/photo/1JxnLwEI5EuN/1k0.jpg
2nd colour was high gloss ral 9010
3th colour:satin ral 9010
http://myalbum.com/photo/45TGiAZPhMev/1k0.jpg
4th colour: flat black
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto800-T4PYF8NH.jpg
finally took it for a test drive for about 15 km's and took it back apart! xe nova's just aren't fast enough lol
http://myalbum.com/photo/NDY3BK8mFCj4/1k0.jpg
so this leaves us in 2014..
the guy who bought my first nova had spent some serious money on my old project and turned it into a serious trackcar.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4p7aDPOag70
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMxtmBy6Ae8
he than decided to sell everything. so I went over to buy me a cae racing cable shifter to put in my astra mk3 :)
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto800-GPWXVD7Q.jpg
so I went to pick up my cae shifter, saw my old nova again and thought it would be a shame if it would go to autograss or something like that
so, time to brake the piggy bank :d
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto800-BNIS7FHE.jpg
so it's a nice shell with new oem rear quarter panels ect., but got some decent parts with it;)
Intrax 1k2 front coilover with 40mm stuts, custom made.
BMW camberplates on front
front shocktower cut and moved back for some extra caster and then cut and raised for some shocktravel
Gaz coilovers on the rear, adjusted damping by Madeno racing.
front suspension with uniballs.
Quaife steering rack
Polyfibre hood and trunk
custom made cage
alu rad
63mm exhaust
put the shell inside and left it for a while..

so, on to 2015.. this is the time I decided to go all out :d
so, here we go:

race technology dl1 datalogger in a custom made panel
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto1k0-SM3JCWHH.jpg
still trial fitting :)
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto1k0-XSVJAEEQ.jpg
bought a qsp quick release. unfortunately it had some play
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto1k0-OPQENX4C.jpg
then decided to spend some more money and bought An original 2015 model sparco quick release
http://myalbum.com/photo/r8qicpRKDPnH/360.jpg
got it, installed it and found out it also had some play :mad::cry::mad:
got a recall from sparco because of a manufacturing fault, mentioned that mine had some play and send it back to sparco. got it back last week and there's still play on the shaft  . should have gone with the lifeline quick release, as they are the same price

bought some oz wheels
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto1k0-MKTUTDIV.jpg
trial fitted them to find out I had massive room on the back off the wheels..
the plan was to fit my 288mm brakes, so trial fitted them to find out that there was still an massive amount of room between the rim and the caliper.. so bigger is better right? time to trial fitted my Porsche(brembo) calipers off my astra.
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto1k0-SD8FVRHQ.jpg
it looked nice, but an 300mm brake disk with a 4 piston caliper would never fit behind a 15'' wheel, right?
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto1k0-RL8FOLAI.jpg
:wall: with some tweaking, it does fit.. :wtf:
4 pots on front it is then
time for some wheel colours

What servo are you using with the Porsche calipers?
Also what's with the five door front wings?

Do like those CAE shifters.
would fancy one if weren't so dam expensive over here.

i look every so often & never seen one as yet over here.
Went to a VW show Saturday evening in Telford & was a few cars there with them on, look awesome.
Few years ago I would of just ordered one, damn mortgage now!!
THat looks great, love that. Bars on the front end for the rad/cooler and very nice. Liking the lower arm set up bits too. Nice brace under there too.
Caliper and wheels look great together.
very nice, mine and yours share some similar ideas.

I've noticed that ;)
a lowered nova with stock fuel tank leaves not much room for a decent exhaust. so I removed the original fuel tank and bought a atl 30liters fuel cell.

Stunning nova!

and off course it doesn't fit, gonna have the centre pin machine down and ad an smaller nut

found an cheap rear axle with disk conversion. planning on making another axle in the future, this will do for now :)
http://myalbum.com/photo/jsOK7uVydl7e/360.jpg
my quick release is back to Sparco, again! it just had a ''little'' play on the shaft lol
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6EOD7Ah7cU
every part I order is just incorrect, broken or doesn't fit lol
I like this!!
I need a 40mm spacer now that I've moved my seat back for the pedal box, so I looked at this Sparco quick release but I think I will go with the Lifeline, well I'll fit a spacer first and then fit a lifeline if I like the steering wheel position.
thnx:thumb: if you want to buy an life line quick release, take a look here:

I think what WideGhost means is that they look the same, which they will. That's sort of what happens when a genuine item is given to a Chinese machine shop for copying.
I can't tell the difference in quality or material spec just from those pics. I would wage on only one of them snapping in an accident though.
I'll be buying the lifeline one!!
The cheap ones are cheap for a reason, they're shit!!!
They may look the same but the are completely different. There's a reason rally teams use £200 lifeline ones and not £14 sparco ones!!!!
BRoadGhost

Point being 230 euros for a quick release with play in it says it all.
Spend your money on whatever you want, but I promise you they're made from exactly the same materials constructed in exactly the same way.
As i've said before HEAVEN FORBID SOMETHING BREAKS IN AN ACCIDENT.
8valve-craig

Heaven forbid a cheap part breaks and causes the accident.
Lifeline ones arent great anyway House, mine has some play too. A little grease on the splines sorts it but not ideal. I still trust it not to break mid bend though.

Hmmmmm I can achieve what I want with a 40mm solid spacer, tempted to do that for now. When I've run out of things to spend money on i'll look into these again!!
Surely the F1 ones don't have any play in them?! it must be achievable?!?

I Always wanted an straight cut gearbox so been looking for een 2nd hand quaife sccr box for some time and didn't find one with the ratio's i wanted, so decided to save up for an new one :thumb:. Montgomery motorsport came with some real good prices on the sccr box so couldn't resist asking the price on an 5sp dogbox. They came with an price that was 2GBP under my budget, so dogbox it is then lol.
In the meanwhile it took them like 2 months to reply to 4 e-mails:confused:. Got tired of waiting (when spending 3K+ I expect some service ) so, spend the extra money and just ordered an Quaife 5speed dogbox with an local shop :thumb:. Should be in by the end of august

the quaife website states the f20 dogbox uses an different spline on the gearbox mainshaft(7/8 20T), in an email they said this wasn't the case and i could use an oem type clutchplate. when i got the dogbox the f20 clutchplate obvious wouldn't fit as the spline is an 7/8 20T spline
so time for (another) new helix clutch lol

Note check wheel stud hole sizes as those Hockly studs can be a little large and need wheels modifying.

the wheel hole sizes are ok. i have another problem with the studs. the sholder on the studs is to long.
for this problem i have 2 options:
-machining the studs and put more thread on them
-fit an spacer(6mm)
so gonna wait to fit the studs until i can decide if i need spacers anyway :)
So the guy on FB doesn't do 5 speed dog sets?
Yes he does. He sells gearboxes/gearsets etc. The gearsets he sells are just not made by himself.

The O/S Chassis leg needs modifying too.

Thnx Craig will def. contact you when I get to the point of fitting it all! already saved all the dry sump photo's on your project page(love the thread btw, just need to update it some more ;)! )
so i know the o/s chassis leg needs cutting, just like the rest of the car :(. just taken some measurements today and my intercooler and radiator setup isn't going to work..
placed the oil tank in the car, no way it will fit in the passenger side of the car and still will be able to have an passenger.. So the sump tank has to go in to the back of the car. Will be some work to get the atl fuel cell en dry sump tank mounted and have an firewall, but that's the fun of building race cars, right?
Nice parts.

thnx for supplying steve!

Will do, I will give you a break down of what parts and labour goes into the head, but basically you will need the best part of £3k plus a head casting, ideally coscast.
With the scavenge pipes Craig mentioned the metal tubes which have the filters in them had the extended piece cut off and AN-10 steel fitting tig welded to them this enabled the pipes to be routed away from the exhaust manifold, as yours is turbocharged it may be less of a problem, but they will probably need to be re-routed away from the turbo and downpipe especially due to the extra heat.

They are nice seats, especially in Black. I trial fitted a pair in mine but wasn't keen as they are very wide and almost touched in the middle. If you haven't done your bars yet maybe do the passenger seat slightly lower and a little further back?
thnx craig,
The bars are done already and the passenger side is a little further back. The problem I'm having is that the bars are to far back and the back off the seat is hitting the cage. So i will look at some longer/custom seatbrackets or make some new bars. Got to collect all the parts first(pedalbox etc.) to find out my seating position and than decide what to do.

kind of. its taken a different route. hopefully will reveal more soon.
I want to able to drive the Corsa a on the street and to make it street legal I need to get the car registered with an 2ltr engine.. Over here(NL) you need get the car inspected by the ''RDW''. The RDW don't really like aftermarket(tuning) parts so to make it easy i want to use as many oem parts as possible..
this means:
-oem opel brakes(284mm front brakes)
-as many oem brake and fuel lines i can fit
-OEM. ''style'' front sheet metal
-OEM style front suspension
-OEM fuel cell
-OEM nova exhaust
-OEM glas
-etc..
first thing on the list: The tube front
Because of the tube front, the oem stuff doesn't fit. So the Corsa needs an ''custom'' OEM style front :).

Just been reading about your snapped exhaust stud pal .
Top trick for next time throw the nut away its not needed and causes more problems than its worth . Turn the power down on the mig welder and keep spotting the head of the stud dont worry the mig will not weld the alloy . If you keep spotting the stud you will end up with a bit that is long enough to get mole grips on . Not only that but the stud will now have been glowing hot so will come out with ease .
You'll be gutted with downgrading on the brakes...

The nut worked eventually and the stud was glowing hot after welding the nut on. Problem was that the stud took the alloy part behind the stud with it when removing the stud. So ended up with an opening to the cooling channel in the cilinder Head..
You'll be gutted with downgrading on the brakes...
It's just to get the car registert with an 2liter engine to avoid problems with insurance etc..
I will be putting all the aftermarket parts on when the registering is done!

It is needed to charge the battery separatly? Is not enough what it get from the alternator?

The alternator will charge the battery. The Nova won't be out much, so the battery needs to get charged every couple of months.
Lithium battery's need an lithium charger with an battery management systems(BMS). lithium battery's don't like way lead battery chargers work and will kill the battery.

The thing was not clear to me, if I need something change in my car if installing the Lifepo battery.

No, the alternator has it's own BMS, so no changes ;)

Haven't done much on the corsa the past few months, so I decided that i need the car running before the end of February.
A lot of small things that needs to be done; fitting axles, wiring, fit the front and rear window, make some new Lexan windows for the front windows etc.
In the meanwhile been searching parts :)
turbosmart Gen v hypergate 45 wastegate

AP Racing brake bias. surely looks pretty decent next to the China brake bias...

AP racing direct fit brake fluid reservoirs.

I have 1 small and 3 medium ones(the one in the picture is the small one).
Bleeding the brakes will not be fun, but it is saves some money on the Tilton reservoir(and hoses).
The grp4 Tilton pedalbox mount looks pretty decent so planning on buying on one off these for mounting the pedalbox :).
Bought an extra set wheels to mount the R888's on.
It will need some new wheel studs to mount some small diameter lug nuts

The lexan window were cracking on the windowslider mounting holes. So I took the windows out and cut up some new windows
http://i67.tinypic.com/s12k2a.jpg
Fitted the first window

And the other side

I wasn't happy with the fitment on the rear window on the previous Corsa.
So made some adjustments to the Lexan en it fits much better now:

Also bought a new intercooler.
I've gone with the ATP turbo 400hp intercooler, cast alu endtanks and an Garrett intercooler core :)

I want to use an E-throttle so I had to do something with the Inlet/Throttlebody.
So I purchased a new inlet plenum and have it made to fit an VW E-throttle body.
The new inletmanifold should be here within a month or so.
It should look something like this, only black ceramic coating and a different TB:
