Hiya. Could anybody tell me the largest gearbox I could fit on a small block 1600. I think it would be an f17, I'm hoping for around 160+ bhp is it possible to fit an f20 to a small block?

Cheers. Xx

Are you going turbo? Thats an impressive power figure any work in progress?

F15 would be your best bet for sensible ratios etc.

The F number is claimed to be a gauge of torque capacity but its really not the case.

Yh going turbo. I've got a metro turbo carb and a gt25r turbo Courtney manifold + big front mount intercooler so far. Plan on using a z16se head with 1mm skimmed from the pistons or a spacer plate or a big thick head gasket, need to spend some time going through the parts catalog at work to see if there's a thicker gasket I can use I'm guessing on 160bhp tbh if Courtney's bodge did 150bhp at 10 psi I think we'll do a bit more than that with decent fuelling and better turbo and a little more boost. Im just waiting to finish a few bits on the shell before I get fully stuck in to the engine build. So I've not got shit going on everywhere should get stuck in in the next week or 2.

F20 can be fitted to a small block, F20 clutch plate and small block cover, should be more than enough for you, getting rarer now as all the C20let boys have blown them up

Yes I was lead to believe the f number to indicate torque

f15 would be from a corsa sport wouldn't it?

cheers.

A few years ago I had 2 f20 gearboxes and couldn't give them away... Typical ay.

I think an f20 would be best really. Thanks for that I wasn't sure if the f20 would actually bolt up to the small block. Any ideas on what clutch I should use. My mate who will build the engine seems to think its going to want a paddle clutch.

Yep total load of bollocks.Theres people running f13 with decent power 20xe on the ovals.

Umm so f15 would be more suited than f20?

Im all ears..

Really i want something that's going to be strong and not explode in to a million smitherings!!!

F13 will be fine

Craig had 170+bhp from his Courtenay converted 1600 and ran a F13 with no problems

I'm going to run a brand new GM F10 on my 1300, I expecting no problems

Courtenay standard boost for 150bhp was more like 6/7 psi BTW

Brand new gearbox? Nice!!

I always thought the Courtney conversions did 10 psi.
I broke several f13 boxes in my old GSI I didn't think one would take an extra 70+hp did Craig's use a standard clutch as well?

My setup is 154 HP and i had never problem with the gearbox.

If you decide to go for a F13cr or F15cr they are exactly the same ratio in case you wanted to know.

In my experience it's how you change gears that'll destroy teeth (& more or less entire boxes); I've just recently turned my F16CR to pieces, but that didn't stop me driving it home with just 2nd & 4th!

Smallblock 8v stroked to 1.8, kent Ast18 cam, 40/32,5 mm valves, 40mm ITB, big exhaust manifold...
I use F13CR with 4,29 final.
