Been on the forum a few year and finally got a mk2 nova about 8 months ago, completely unmolested 1.4 spi. I originally put a x16xe in it but wasn't really happy with it tbh so goin to put a c20xe into it over the next couple of months.
Just after I got it I got coilovers:
http://i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag98/dohanlon792/Nova/DSC_0017_zpsvtoqrrwy.jpg (http://s1300.photobucket.com/user/dohanlon792/media/Nova/DSC_0017_zpsvtoqrrwy.jpg.html)

Then got some th1s which where too small and to wide :

http://i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag98/dohanlon792/Nova/20150904_171034_zpsyl3l2xaz.jpg (http://s1300.photobucket.com/user/dohanlon792/media/Nova/20150904_171034_zpsyl3l2xaz.jpg.html)

It had the 16 in at that point:

http://i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag98/dohanlon792/Nova/20151003_181101_zpskxfgcbsr.jpg (http://s1300.photobucket.com/user/dohanlon792/media/Nova/20151003_181101_zpskxfgcbsr.jpg.html)

So now it's engine-less with the bay striped bare ready to be strengthened. Updates will be slow and steady but I've all the conversion bits there minus a rear gearbox mount spacer if anyone has one? Thanks

Got the engine out earlier

It's a standard redtop with rod bolts, a quaife diff and Ashley manifold. Should be good enough fun to begin

Are the strengthening plates that people weld onto the strut tops essential for a conversion ?

Jonlem
25-01-16, 10:02 PM
Not really but quick and easy to install, however welding the bay up and adding crossmember strengtheing plates is strongly advised

darragh792

I got a kit but it didn't have them in it, was planing on stiching the bay just. The shells pretty clean so I may just give them a miss

I thought a nova and corsa conversion mount was the same but turns out they aren't to I'm gonna fabricate a temporary one tomorrow so I can fit exhaust and mark alternator cut out

Looking good mate, I had the same problem at the weekend got sent a corsa mount instead of the nova one, annoying when your trying to make progress!

darragh792
27-01-16, 10:52 AM
Yeah it was annoying doesn't help that people advertise them as corsa/nova from time to time

darragh792

Just modified the corsa mount earlier, engines sitting ok I think

Exhaust is spot on just need a flexi to join manifold and system.

Hopefully hear it running at the weekend

Wot did u have to do to modify the mount?

darragh792
27-01-16, 11:16 PM
Cut of the bit that bolts to the engine and made a plate then welded it, it's only a temporary one

Must look at the one I bought to see if it's the right one, known my luck it will be the wrong one too lol

If you have a decent power welder than buzz it up and it'll be fine tbh! It's worth spending a bit of time in mock-up getting the engine nice and level anyway.

darragh792

Done a bit today, connected all the wiring to the engine and fitted exhaust manifold and system..

http://i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag98/dohanlon792/Nova/20160130_162729_zpszbqpff77.jpg (http://s1300.photobucket.com/user/dohanlon792/media/Nova/20160130_162729_zpszbqpff77.jpg.html)

Alternators tight but I've got a solid mount for the rear what do yous think?

http://i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag98/dohanlon792/Nova/20160130_151918_zpshh00hsil.jpg (http://s1300.photobucket.com/user/dohanlon792/media/Nova/20160130_151918_zpshh00hsil.jpg.html)

Also it seems like the radiator won't fit with my manifold and the slam panel may need a slight notch for the thermostat to rad hose

If you had solid mounts all round alternator clearance would definitely be fine as it is but I'd at least think about Tiger-sealing the two front mounts combined with the solid rear and try rocking the engine quite vigorously to see how much movement there is.

Tidy work so far :thumb:

darragh792

Thanks bud, may just notch it or move it to the front. Just want leave it tidy either way

Went out to the garage for an hour to check clearances

Hose is touching the slam panel
http://i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag98/dohanlon792/Nova/20160131_230004_zpseqjzfxci.jpg (http://s1300.photobucket.com/user/dohanlon792/media/Nova/20160131_230004_zpseqjzfxci.jpg.html)

This is the radiator moved behind the mounting point and it's still tight so I'll have to drill a new mounting point hole. Think I'm gonna cut the slam panel off and weld brackets on to it for ease of access to the radiator and the manifold

Get your hands on a genuine exhaust manifold (pref a stainless one) ands you'll probably find you'll have more room...

Iain
01-02-16, 08:30 AM
Ashley 4-2-1? Mine has a fair amount of room and did on the standard bottom mounts too. Either its made slightly differently to mine or your engine sits a bit further forward?

darragh792
01-02-16, 10:38 AM
Yeah it's an ashley one, I remember a friends being very close to the radiator, it may be my offside mount I made but none of the mounts look twisted tho.

Ah Ok - It looks the same diameter as a standard on in the pics?

It's a similar design will just a larger bore all round, your comment makes sense now

Got a bit of time spent on the nova over the past couple of days, got the engine running then took it back out again to cut what needed cut.

Few pics of the alternator notch

Have to finish welding in the strengthing plates in now and then start to prep the bay for paint

darragh792

Got the strengthening plates all welded in the front,

Engine looks clean!!

I've had to cut the slam to accommodate the top rad hose too.

Iain

Engine looks sexy nice work. Going red hoses throughout?

You're going about it the right way mocking everything up before paint. Leads to a much better finished product.
Daft question you checked bonnet clearance on the engine?

got a bit done to the nova tonight, electric power steering installed and wheel straightened.

Does anyone have any experience with the mk1 front wings off ebay? I'm going to mk1 mine and they aren't bad money

Few pics of recent progress, waiting on spot weld bit to come so I can fit the internal shifter.

Washer bottle relocated:

Made a bracket that bolts to ordinal column mount but straightens the wheel and lowerstuff it. I'll need to move the brakelight switch as it will fowl the UJ now

http://i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag98/dohanlon792/Nova/20161004_202719_zpslzjcswb2.jpg (http://s1300.photobucket.com/user/dohanlon792/media/Nova/20161004_202719_zpslzjcswb2.jpg.html)

I'm going to fit a mk2 astra servo in place of the nova one along with the four pots I feel this will give a far better pedal feel

http://i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag98/dohanlon792/Nova/20161004_202555_zpslarbxpfi.jpg (http://s1300.photobucket.com/user/dohanlon792/media/Nova/20161004_202555_zpslarbxpfi.jpg.html)

Also I'm just goin to run throttle bodies straight away now instead of running on the standard inlet but I'm not at that stage yet I'll put engine back in a mock everything up again soon

darragh792
06-10-16, 10:30 PM
Tonight was all about getting the astra master cylinder to fit, wasn't to bad just cut the sides of the astra clevis and welded the nova one on after I cut it.

Having done this I'm not sure why people why more people haven't as its a lot easier than the corsa option.

totalnova
07-10-16, 09:18 AM
I think the reason people do the corsa conversion is to eliminate the bar across the bulk head as it reduces feel.
I'd be interested to see exactly what you've done and parts you needed.
Nick.

Iain

Nice servo mod. Should help brake feel. But yes the Corsa wins for weight and pedal slop elimination.

darragh792
07-10-16, 10:26 AM
I found the corsa master cylinder and servo spongy in a corsa, all that's needed is both servos, cut nova pin and welded it on to astra clevis after I cut it down to size

darragh792
07-10-16, 11:00 AM

What's people's opinions on taking out the bracing along the floor that front of the original seats to? Got some new seats and what to try and put them closer to the centre of the car but they are fowling the bracing

I would only consider removing the bracing with a cage. But I'm sure you could notch it.

going to get a 6 point one, more than likely bolt in. I may just remove the bracing as it runs over the exhaust tunnel and keep it in place between sill and tunnel

Looking good man:thumb: an the seat looks to low I think if you raised it you will sort the fouling issue

That's just it sat in but I'm welding in the mounts for it and want to keep it low, suppose I'll be able to play about with the side mounts

Will probably have to move the battery again as I bought a cage and it has a brace that will foul it in the current location. Had to do away the the vw cops as the ecu can't provide enough current to fire them, so going to go with a block coil off a polo

It's alive! Was initially hard to keep running but adjustEd some settings and balanced the throttle bodies. Idle is sitting around 1500 rpm so need to try and lower that but apart from that all is good!

thanks rich.

That's the lowest I can mount them while able to weld underneath them, the column is moved over its straight but not dead centre

Then seats are a bit to wide but they will do for the time being, got them for decent money and the are like new albeit out of date, now just to get the cage feet welded in sometime this week

Wide seats will be fine, more room for a maccies drive through lol

Is the colour of this the same as your BMW?

Drivers seat is sorted now, moved the mount of a bit so i clears the cage no problem. No its like a burgundy colour at the minute but it will be getting painted soon tho I'm unsure what colour either white red or grey but i fancy putting some opel motorsport style graphics on it so leaning towards white

anyone on here running the corsa ones? They seem to have better bump steer characteristic from what I've read.

Cage should be finished this week too as I've recieved the folded plates

Iain
21-05-17, 09:52 AM
The main impact on bump steer will be the steering arm angle.

If the lower bit is the only difference and your lower suspension arm is not at a satisfactory angle then that's definitely worth looking at.

darragh792
21-05-17, 09:55 AM
My thinking is that if i want to lower the car slightly at the front the corsa hubs would in theory help with the arm angle

BRoadGhost
21-05-17, 10:29 AM
IMO get those blasted before the larger VW bearings & vactan them for protection.

Geometry is such a big thing & all depends on how far you want to take it; the lower you go the more you end up doing. I'm at the stage where it's inverted steering rod ends, cut down steering arms, spherical bushes, hand made lower arms & bars, Corsa C bottom ball joints & raised mountings welded onto the knuckles themselves. CVs are now the limiting factor, ground clearance & that's on 17's. After making such changes it actually makes it feel like a standard setup (i.e unmodified) except the center of gravity is down about a foot lol

darragh792
21-05-17, 11:46 AM
Why use corsa c ball joints? To be fair I don't want to take it to far at the minute would like to get a few track days in and take it from there

They're bigger & mount on 3 holes; could even be same as the astra counterpart. Just keep in mind nova part's were never designed for 3x the power 1.5x the weight; bigger wheels, brakes, solid mounts etc.

I would be interested to know the measurements on each knuckle from centreline of bearing to top of TCA taper. The lowered ball joint will help with correcting the roll centre if you intend to lower the car much, but in my experience 2.0 Nova's handle great at a sensible height.

BRoadGhost
22-05-17, 08:59 PM
That 1 measurement alone on mine is 25MM, but that's not a whole truth on the correction. The bespoke arm itself effectively raises the knuckle too thus sharing the stress.
