My mate pulled out the dipstick (sounds sexual) while my car was running, and smoke was coming out. I was told that this is not good, and honestly, I've never noticed
What could be the cause, and is this bad?

Benn

Smoke? Or light steamy smoke?

As the oil will be hot, so you'll get a steamy like smoke.

The same as what comes out the breather
White in color. Not billowing, but flows out

So it's nothing to worry about? Best guess for age of the engine is between 23 and 26 years old (roughly)

I've read it could be the breather system. Someone told me it could be the piston rings. So, it's all good?

Sounds like blow-by. As per mowgli.
Next time you check your oil, turn your engine off first and it wont bother you. ML top-tip.

Maybe it'll fail due to a faulty reverse light plug.

You think it's gonna fail? Because I don't want to lose my car [emoji22] I've grown quite fond of it in the past year..

As long as its not rotten as a pear it will be easy and quick to fix. It's a nova. Simple cars really mate.

It has a bit of rust here and there, but nothing structural. Good as new underneath
Under the dashboard is a different story. The two things that I feel will hold it back are the fact it rolls coal but it's a but expensive to fix and I'm saving up for it, as well as the rear Springs sitting on spacers for reasons unbeknown to me. But I'm also saving up for a set of coil overs.

ben doodar
07-01-16, 05:41 PM
Rear springs on spacers? I guess the rear springs are already sitting on a coil over platform?

Also I'm confused to as what rolls coal means?

Best guess I have is, shocks too long, so they fitted spacers underneath the spring on the axle to lift the car up to stop it from bottoming out. That's the best guess I have.

When a diesel engine billows black smoke, ie, rolling coal.

Not too much (not like a VW *shots fired* but, some smoke.)

I'm about to lose my $#!t.

Has anyone ever encountered a turn signal/hazard light problem with a Nova, where it sort of sticks? Like, the dash light stays on, but doesn't blink, rendering a turn signal useless?

Iain

Hazard switch fully operational? Not broken like most mk2s? The spring usually breaks

I have to pull it out slightly, rather than push it like most cars, but, this problem occurs for a few days, then it goes away for a few weeks. When I whack the hazard switch, they work again, as I understand they're on the same relay.

Iain

Dismantle it and remove the spring so it operates push pull and see if that helps

I've narrowed it down to somewhere behind the dash. Stuck my hand in through the driver side vent, touched a wire and they started working again. Don't know which wire, so I'm taking it to an electrician tomorrow. We'll see how that goes.

Iain
10-01-16, 04:04 PM
Maybe the relay was just sticky. Or not seated well.

Relays are on bottom of fuse box in that order.

In fact not sure why I didn't mention that to begin with, classic sticky relay behaviour?

More than likely the relay. The wires I were playing with were above the fusebox.

ShawnAzzopardi
11-01-16, 12:40 PM
And it's fixed. It was the relay.

Now every once in a while it blinks really quick and then calms down again
I just need a new hazard switch. If anyone has one in his spares bin for a mk2, let me know I'll buy it off you.

MOT tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Here we go again.

After a 141 Euro alternator rebuild a few weeks ago, the car decided to refuse to start today.

Borrowed my neighbors battery just to test, and with the car started, I'm only getting 12.27V at the batt.

I genuinely don't know what's going on. I've had my battery for less than 16 months, bought it new earlier last year, and I can't find the damn guarantee notice.

millworm

I'm taking it to the electrician's tomorrow, as I don't have the space to work where I am.

But late last week, I noticed that when I turned the ignition on, the battery light didn't come on. At first I thought that maybe the light had gone, but I tried many of the other bulbs I have and still nothing. Thought maybe they were off too, so I went to buy some and still nothing. Could that be part of the problem maybe? Because when the car is started, everything works as it should, so the alternator is working

Battery is charging, slowly creeping past the 13V mark after being on charge for a couple of hours. When taken off the charge, it slowly starts to creep back down. Is this normal? Never done this before.

Sitting at around 13.3V at this moment. Battery has been on charge for about..9 hours now. Battery charger is an older Telwin model, so don't know if it has the automatic cut off when the battery is fully charged. Also don't know how much volts it should be at in order to be fully charged. It's quite a large capacity battery since it's for a diesel. 72AH I believe.

I do love my car, and I'll miss her dearly. I've named her Wednesday (after the Addams Family) because I find her both adorable and she scares the ever living fuck out of me (especially when the boost kicks in. With open boost, it pushes over 2 bar from the stock turbo. That + the sudden burst of torque/power is terrifying. Torque steer to the max.) but like they say, all good things must come to an end. Sadly, there wasn't much good with all the money I've spent on her (both CV joints, water pump, alternator service and again on Monday, alternator belt, timing belt, speedo cable and gear, gearbox oil change, engine oil change more than once, both rear wheel cylinders, front discs and pads, brake master cylinder, front stabilizer bushes, fuel lines, fuel tank hoses, manual pump and filter, full exhaust system, wheels and tires, and other things) in a little over a year was a lot of money spent, especially since I make, what? 250 GBP/month, if that.

And as for that, couldn't afford a German car haha. All my friends are like, "Brah. Become //M-Power"

Honestly, might just get a Toyota Starlet EP81 with a 1.5L TD.

Always been more of a fan of the English language rather than the Maltese. My personality changes completely when speaking either. I'm more calm when speaking English, and I swear enough to make a sailor blush when speaking Maltese. I've read about, 8 books in Maltese in my life, and hundreds in English. Plus I also lived in Canada for 5 and a half years (I'm born in Malta though, as Maltese as we get)

And as for holiday for you and your lass, I'd say come during the summer so you can enjoy the beaches. There's quite a few tourist spots to see, especially Azure Window in Gozo. Bring lots and lots of sunscreen, as it gets particularly hot during the summer.

Small update. The Nova has been sold and will be gone sometime next week. I signed the logbook on Wednesday. I'm gonna miss her, she was a great car despite all the issues she gave me. But that's less her fault and more the fault of the absolute c*ntwipes that owned it before me. I was a fool for buying a car that was in such bad condition, but at the same time, I'm glad I made that choice, because I wouldn't have ended up with the car I have today.

This was the day I went to see it
