Ok a lot of us seem to be busy with houses and DIY tasks instead of wasting money on rusty cars. So share your DIY antics here.

nice wood :)

I've been playing loads with the new toy I got in July.. A lovely Festool Track saw, yes it was expensive for a circular saw but its so pleasent to use and clean with the hoover hooked up.
So far I've made the littleun a new play house, a built in set of drawers and ladder cupboard within the wardrobe area in littleuns room, made some bird boxes for xmas presents and planning a bed build for us in the new year along with a new unit below the TV to also house some speakers etc.
Oh and finished off the table I made this time last year lol

just being able to cut a full 8' sheet perfectly straight with almost no mess makes it worth the cost lol
I do want/need a shorter rail though as the 1.4M ones are just that bit too long for half sheet work... Annoyingly an 800mm rail is £40ish and a 1400 is £50. Might go halves with someone else and have a 1400 chopped

I have just finished the paintwork in the new dining room, will be laying the laminate floor tomorrow and will start rebuilding the room on Sunday.

2016 is a project free year so have agreed to a long list of gardening jobs - mainly cutting stuff back and making up raised beds for the new veg garden.

Normally i'm not a massive fan of DIY. But me and the Mrs went a bit nuts.

The hall way in the house has always been very dark,(when the extension was built that remo large window which doesn't help)

So we thought it needs a nice coat of paint and re do the gloss then go from there.
Was dirty white woodchip paper, and what we found out to be a off white gloss. Annoyingly no before pics...

Glossing the woodwork, you can see the colour diff.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Crap/IMG_4780_zpsh3wmjcsx.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Crap/IMG_4780_zpsh3wmjcsx.jpg.html)

And after, walls are a light lime green, gloss is bright clean white and i fitted a new 5 bulb light from Ikea and a nice mirror to help move the light around.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Crap/IMAG1280_zpsx51rtrkf.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Crap/IMAG1280_zpsx51rtrkf.jpg.html)

Moved coat rail off the wall and on to the not used recessed door for better space and more light way..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Crap/IMAG1280_zpsx51rtrkf.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Crap/IMAG1280_zpsx51rtrkf.jpg.html)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Crap/IMAG1281_zps5juujiis.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Crap/IMAG1281_zps5juujiis.jpg.html)

I've always just put my keys on the stairs. But Em wanted a key hook, she wasn't taken on my XE plug cover idea... So i made this up. Cheap hanging sign thing the holes used for the screws and some small hooks..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Crap/IMAG1285_zpsa4z4twh2.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Crap/IMAG1285_zpsa4z4twh2.jpg.html)

And in the "shower room" there's never been a towel rail, which annoys me. So bought and fitted one above the rad to dry/warm the towels.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Crap/IMAG1284_zpst9l0jiqk.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Crap/IMAG1284_zpst9l0jiqk.jpg.html)

Yes the tiles are naff, but the are all around the whole room and yes the cabinets are shit too. But at the mo cba to change them yet.

Sorry guys but I hate white gloss woodwork. I bought another house this year and ripped it all out. I had a joiner replace all the skirtings, facings and doors with oak so it only needs a coat of varnish so no horrible white paint that turns yellow. At least it will see me out lol

No wonder the project section has been quiet recently everyone is doing diy. I my self gave the shower room a freshen up, regrouted the tiles, re silconed it and painted the ceiling. Think I might treat the wife to a new kitchen this year after just having new double glazing and new front and back door.
Oh also did the nursery a few weeks ago ready for the newborn to arrive.

Just some that was on offer at B&Q about £12/sqm I think. Thinner boards to make the room look larger. Slightly textured but not too much and a slight groove between the boards too.

I've had the wall floor boards up. Sealed up the holes around the fuse box routing thru the floor. Found there was no insulation in there so stuffed it full. Put all the board back down, changing to longer philips screws to hold them down better. Did more gloss work on the bits over the stairs.

Would that be Johnsons? We've started using that although I hate DIY, if it hasn't got 4 wheels, I'm not really interested.
Missus is after the Bathroom redoing next year, so might add a few pictures in here, that's after we put the kitchen back together again after the Dishwasher spat its dummy (and I'm not saying the missus did!) and too a piss all over the floor.
She wants some coving in the Spare room as well with a freshen up on the paint as well.

Now, I personally think that after 8 years since we moved in and decorated nothing needs doing..... Her on the other hand, something each year now.... the list is a long one, Carpets downstairs, new doors through out, new gate outside.

That's something I learnt quick when living with a woman. The house is like the Forth Rail Bridge - once you have finished painting at one end , its time to go back to the first point and start all over again !!

I think the wife mentioned something about our bedroom next year - joy !

I've noticed that the paints trippers have got wussier and also if you are attacking a waterbased paint, the stripper struggles to penetrate so you get the top layer off and then have to go at it again and again :(

Blocks the light out? Mines all walled in like that, stops all the light.

I layed new underlay and refitted the carpet in the hallway. Can't remember when it was last down, but its so nice now, quite, warmer and soft underfoot.

Yeah stairs were quite dark even though there's a huge window at the top of them. This should make a huge difference hopefully.

I Can't wait to get carpets down etc. Still a long way from that though unfortunately.

My banister doesn't sit flush against the wall. Newly plastered. Any ideas how to fix?

If you are going to gloss it do the above, if you are stripping to natural wood and varnishing then you'll have to either live with it or get busy with the plane.

Can you guarantee its the skimming thats out? Ie a big 4ft level over it or a straigt edge?
Only trouble with caulk is it shrinks if its a big gap..

EwanG

If you caulk it paint the caulk with the paint you paint the walls with. If it's a big gap and it shrinks once it dries then just put another layer in top.

Bit of wooden corner bead, jobbed.

Just about to say the same thing, put a piece of quadrant down it.

And that's more flexible so it'll follow the walls contour? Might look a bit daft on top of a handrail?!

Stuart

Got a rail the other side? Ditch the one in the wall lol

Iain

No it's solid walls both sides just had it plastered and obviously not ruler flat all the way.

Is that the handrail or the stringer. I usually deco fill the stringer

Iain
25-01-16, 10:56 AM
What does that mean in retard terms? I know how to use a 13mm spanner only not this DIY malarky

Shamish82
25-01-16, 11:31 AM
The stringer is part of the stairs that treads slot into. Old properties normally have a gap there. If it's the backing plate that the handrail fixes too then once screwed back will take the shape of the wall. Use caulk and smooth out with a wet sponge reduces the sink age.

Iain

Its literally a pigsear or whatever its called handrail screwed directly to the wall. And its not taking the shape of the wall I've tried screwing it in.

Use grip fill it dries harder then caulk around it again reduces shrinkage. Gap doesn't look to bad might just be the photo tho

Iain

I planned to paint the wall then mount the grab rail as plain wood so thought filler products may look crap, could potentially get away with white to match the wall I guess.

Stuart
25-01-16, 01:08 PM
scribe the rail... or get a chippy in to do that

Iain
25-01-16, 01:17 PM
Scribe = make it wibbly to match the wall?

I have a planer I was gonna try and take a bit off, assume that'll end up a mess lol

Stuart
25-01-16, 01:26 PM
yeah make it wobbly lol

Mark the high spots and cut the plaster back so the handrail fits in the slot

We decided to redecorate the hallway, including stripping the paint off the woodwork.... What a bugger of a job, as the waterbased paint won't strip nicely :( also it stops the stripper from penetrating (snigger) to the other layers. As the skirting, architrave and other bits are a pain, I'm ripping most of the woodwork out and replacing with new as it's faster, cleaner and more awesome lol

just the stairs to strip as replacing em would be excessive

I keep getting small cracks in my new plaster, which is coming through the paint, any ideas? They're all to/from openings, gaps, drilled holes and 'shortest path' to the edge.

That's it drying and house movement isnt it?

Stuart
15-02-16, 01:55 PM
Weird, does look like movement cracks, but if its fresh plaster it should have a hint of give to it for a while.
You might need that thick paint from polyfiller lol

Iain
15-02-16, 02:05 PM
Was done in Nov 2015, then I gave it a watered down coat and only got round to painting last Wednesday. The cracks are showing through the new paint so held off giving it its proper colour until I am sure it won't crack through again.

Decorating is bollocks

Stuart
15-02-16, 02:17 PM
yep.

We are trying to pick a new flooring but its a menace, we want tile effect/style but dont want real tiles as they are too cold, vynil roll is not really gonna happen, tile effect laminate looks to be good but seems much more delicate than normal laminate and karndean and the like will need a boat load of prep work on the floor with levelling compounds lol

EwanG

Use hairline crack filler. I'm sure pollycell make it.

Did you just plaster over old plaster or re board it? Im
guessing it's because of that.

I always thought you get cracks when it dries out too quickly? An old school plasterer I think told me, whether it's true or not I don't know?

L33 LEG
15-02-16, 06:24 PM
Im not sure, plastering is one of the only jobs that I don't like doing. I've noticed with my house that the few places that I didn't plasterboard are showing a few small cracks and I've put it down to that. Everywhere else is totally fine.

Applied a load of gripfil and screws into the noisy stairs. 13/14 steps, and only one makes noise anymore :) victory is mine.

tomorrow is sanding and priming, along with putting holes in for wiring in ir beams for each step.
