I've gotta pull my spare f20 apart any way to stick in my nova was just wondering what 5th I can stick in to drop the revs a bit for a better cruise as been told a few different answers but don't want to loose top end either
2 I've been told are
5th out of a f18 wr box
or 5th out of a f17 wr diesel box
many thanks Connor
I used a 5th gear set up out of a Cavalier Isuzu TD F18. It's works very well for cruising.

What about top end
If you're reducing revs for better cruising then it'll increase your potential top speed.
For the turbo? I'd drop a taller final drive in instead lol

I'm going to fit a full f18w box in mine when I kill the f20

I wouldn't. Every gear is much longer. Wont be a fast getting there. But quicker on a long pick up.
And sorry Connor, i thought it was the F18WR 5th that was wanted so motorway cruising. Might be the derv box 5th.
As Benn said - there's no point in fitting the WR box - it will be rubbish.
Just change the FD as Stuart says - later F20s (in calibras and Cavs) had a longer 5th too btw
I would say if it would do 140mph before, it would probably do 160mph with the right amount of BHP of course.
The diesel F17 long 5th in my short ratio F20 (4.2) is pretty awful for spirited driving, I try to avoid fitting it where ever possible. I can't imagine it being very nice in a standard final drive.
That's the thing, if you put a "cruising" 5th in, in even a slightly fast nova (as in a standard XE on TB's) then you will go from a fun 1-4 and into a long ass 5th that'll drag.
Granted a turbo will reduce the implied effect but even so, it'll suck balls
I don't see the point in a longer 5th gear personally. The nova isn't a mile munching grand touring car its a lightweight hatch that wants to be thrashed and banged through the gears. I have other cars though so maybe that affects my opinion since I don't daily it.
