Been looking at feck in off the beemer in the new year and buying a clio . Only thing that's putting me off is the whole dephaser/timing belt changes are the prices still close to 700 quid for the supply and fitting? Is it really a job that only Renault main dealer or specialist can do?

Alot of the Renault forums I've looked at seem to be full of twats that think a exhaust change is a specialist job and that brembo oem discs are a performance upgrade lol

Thanks for any help

the dephasers never really went on the clios only mainly on the meganes for some reason, get a cheap 172 or 182 they are cheap to buy, mod and run and have loads of power, and they are very easy to work on :thumb: few lads at my work have them and love them, and the bits you can buy for them are endless, (abit like novas back in the day)

Ive seen a lot of clios with dephaser issues. Wouldnt say its a specialist job though. Ive never done one myself but know quite a few people in the french shed scene who have tackled them theirselves.
It wouldnt put me off buying one, good cheap ragger in my opinion.

Any easy way to know if they are in good working order if their is no sign of a change in the service history?

Nah lol. He just breaks GTi-6's and 17/82's etc all of the time.
Bought a couple leading the timing belt doing, and said they are worth more in bits.

I should have said they aren't 'his' cars.

lol yea they do break well and dont seem to fetch much money for what they are, even more reason for TJ to buy one so when he fooks it up he can break it and not loose any moneylol

I like how the shafts just slide out so when you change a shocky springs you think where the fuck is the oil coming from lol

Aye, definitley.
I was tempted by an 80k blue 182, to flip. Was about £900 and wasn't really worthwhile, when I looked into it.

Would make a cheap, fun toy, though!

helped my mate do 3 track clios now and one was a race prepped cup shell , they are really cheap at the mo, just like novas where back in the day, maybe fetching silly money in ten years like them horrible 1300 white nova over priced pieces of crap lol

There a brilliant buy at the minute, 180hp for £700ish. Can be very tail happy in the wet, like all performancy french hot hatches but they a good giggle on track.

The timing belt change requires special locking tools but apart from that is just as easy as any belt change. It will fail on you if not locked correctly though so either buy/borrow the tools or take it to a specialist. Stay away from the 182's aswell as they are the slowest and most expensive of the mk2s. If your planning to modify it, the f4r''s are infamously difficult to get power from inless you go the turbo route so bear than in mind. I spent a small fortune on jenveys, cams and mapping for very minimal gains.

You are also bang on about the forum. It's full of complete tools and every single one of them is a keyboard mechanic.

Thinking about it having had both I'd get a 106 gti over a 172/182 all day long. They handle and look better and with breathing modifications there is nothing in it. Plus the 106/saxo is a lot cheaper to modify and buy parts for. For instance you could get a pugsport exhaust, 421 manifold, cams and mapping for the price of a 182 cambelt change lol.

Only issue for me with regards to the 106 gti is they cost double what a 172/182 does currently

i have a 172 cup, if you buy one that needs a timing belt/dephaser then get it done by someone that has the correct renault locking tools, once its done then that's it good for years, everything else is straight forward like any other car tbh.

upgraded parts can be a little bit more expensive than say a vauxhall as there is still a high demand for them, they also handle and brake really well out of the box and are fast enough due to the weight, the best thing about them is they do not rust, and handle like they are on rails, unlike a nova :eek:lol

The phase-1 172's seem to rust badly from what I have seen. They are also all very heavy cars.

If its a track car you are looking for TJ then as above, best off finding a ph2 172cup, and preferably one that somebody has sensibly modified. Don't pay too much attention to belts etc, just budget for a specialist to do once its your's. I can recommend one or two.

Yer it will be a track and road car. I might be a big girl but I like abs and aircon so the cup doesn't really shout out at me.. especially as I'm bound to end up uprating suspension components at some point anyway. Hopefully have one on the drive before February as a birthday present to myself :)

Cheers for the help guys. Craig I will will be in touch about the specialists as and when I get it cheers dude :thumb:

Under 1100kgs do the sound that heavy of a car to me :(

I owned the cup but I'd be going ph1 if I was ever to get another. They ain't much heavier than the cup and have all the goodies you want plus 15" Oz f1s as standard. Whichever one you go for make sure to get 15" wheels as they completely transform the car.

Pm me if you get one and fancy a few mods I still got loads of good parts left from when I broke mine.

Yozza sport exhaust(rare as rocking horse shit but widely regarded as the best system) also got a whiteline arb which is a must have imo, makes the turn it a million times nicer. Some rota slipstream's in 15" 4.7kg a wheel, rs inlet, sparco subframes, KW coilovers, jms mounts. Pretty much all sorts lol. I kept hold of all the handling mods as I thought it might buy another for a dedicated track car but I have plans to get rid of the fd and buy a supra tt so I just can't see myself bothering with abother now.

Rs inlet is that the carbon fibre one?

Yer was always going to go 15" with the wheel as you can get decent performance tyres cheaper. And loads of used slicks on ebay as well

I will defently be I touch at some point about mods. Want to get to know the car in basic form before fettling to much
