After floating around the forums for a couple of years and not really contributing a great deal i've finally got my hands on another nova :d. Popped up just a couple of miles up the road so i couldn't turn it down
It's seen better days but its only had one lady owner until 2012 and her son (i think) for the last few years, although its been sat for a year or two, 45k miles from newhttp://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g258/ellis_123450/467CDC09-9563-46D5-91D0-5D8174D334D0_zpsfoijb6wq.jpg (http://s58.photobucket.com/user/ellis_123450/media/467CDC09-9563-46D5-91D0-5D8174D334D0_zpsfoijb6wq.jpg.html)http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g258/ellis_123450/E870CAAE-887D-4D85-A875-D038E56D2518_zpsmpghyds8.jpg (http://s58.photobucket.com/user/ellis_123450/media/E870CAAE-887D-4D85-A875-D038E56D2518_zpsmpghyds8.jpg.html)

There's a few bad points.
theres no ignition barrel and steering housing, not sure why as the keys are there.
it's covered in dents and scrapes and spider webs and leaves etc..
theres a few bits of rust here and there, mainly on the sills and a tiny hole in the boot

good to hear it :thumb: have you done much to it in the last year?
wasn't too sure on the colour at first but it does seem pretty rare and they do look good finished in this colour so a respray will be in order at some point.
not too sure what the plan is, just tart it up a bit, sort the rust out, decent wheels, a bit lower etc...
i've had it a few weeks now, stripped the front wings and bumpers, il post more pictures at some point but my computer has decided it doesn't want to work anymore and uploading pictures to here by phone takes a while...

the wings arent too bad, just rusty at the front where they connect to the chassis
front valance is pretty solid just a bit tatty around the edges
underneath the rear bumper is suprisingly rust free
there's dents around both tail lights, drivers side isnt too bad but the passenger side doesnt sit right at all, will probably need an afternoon with a big hammer,
not too sure how to attack the scrape under the filler cap, ive took the filler neck off but still cant really get to it.

and one last picture for now lol
i left it uncovered one of the nights when it rained quite a bit, im guessing water got in through the holes for the wing.. anyway its covered up now so hopefully no more shrooms

made some rather slow progress over the last couple of months after being stupidly busy at work.
gradually taking bits off with not much idea what i'm doing  i'll also just point out that i'm not a mechanic and i dont work with cars and i spend most of the time just waving hammers about but we'll get there eventually.
the general idea is to just fix the rusty bits, tart it up, make it look pretty etc. maybe a gsi bumper here and a coilover there, we'll see what happens.

anyway since the last post i've took the nackered rad out, took the exhaust off, took the rear shocks out, half stripped the interior, been to poland, took the discs and pads off, given it a sand here and there, poked some rust, uncovered some filler and had a ball ache with the track rod ends, nothing groundbreaking, mainly just faffing but worthy of a couple of pics

not the best for a 2 owner from new, 45k mile car, but the guys at the garage that mot'd it said it turned up every year with a new dent or scrape somewhere... so lets just say it's got 'character'

had a couple of hours today, minimal progress, wrestled with the track rod ends again to no avail, broke a spanner on one of the front shock bolts but got them out in the end...

You should really use the round ends for bolts like that, won't slip off. Or even better a 19mm socket and breaker bar.

amongst all of the other things i'm currently doing to the nova i've decided to tackle the headgasket, probably didnt need doing but i fancied having a bash at it anyway
new headbolts, waterpump, gaskets and timing belt ordered.
just wondering what's the best way to clean it without getting crap all down the holes
also is it best to clean the sump out and replace the gasket, i dont think it was leaking but the whole engine was pretty oily

had a couple of days off this week, managed to get a few bits done.
took the head apart and tried to keep it reasonably organised :tard:
cleaned the valves up and replaced the seals
gave the head and the bottom end a quick scrub
took the steering rack out and painted it gold just to be different
gave the engine bay a quick scrub while everything is out of the wayhttp://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g258/ellis_123450/Mobile%20Uploads/9B5BEEFD-552C-4231-8A6F-2F8D523E5B8E_zps8russfns.jpg (http://s58.photobucket.com/user/ellis_123450/media/Mobile%20Uploads/9B5BEEFD-552C-4231-8A6F-2F8D523E5B8E_zps8russfns.jpg.html)

got the nova started tonight, no horrible noises or leaks from what i can see, didnt have it running for long though as it was reasonably late.
and i know most of you guys on here could probably change a 1.2 headgasket in your sleep but i've never done it before and have only basic car mechanic experience soo i'm well chuffed :d

anyway, a few more pictures

picked up some rear shocks and springs off a lad just down the road from me on facebook, gave them a quick paint, not sure how well the paint will last,
primed and painted the rocker cover, again not sure if the paint will last but it looks good at the mo :thumb:

First head gasket change is always a biggie, so I know the relief when it runs again. Get it up to temp and give it a compression test

after more faffing and generally not getting much done i've noticed a thin bead of oil on the front of the engine between the head and the cam case.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g258/ellis_123450/Mobile%20Uploads/F215374A-49FA-4071-B6C4-5B264118C3E7_zpsbkeraac4.jpg (http://s58.photobucket.com/user/ellis_123450/media/Mobile%20Uploads/F215374A-49FA-4071-B6C4-5B264118C3E7_zpsbkeraac4.jpg.html)

started it a few times now, got it up to temperature and given the head bolts and extra 30 degree turn and it doesnt seem to be leaking down the engine or getting anyworse.
the only other thing is when it gets up to temp the exhaust starts to leak between the manifold and the downpipe and it gets quite smokey, tried adjusting it and it doesn't want to go away.

haven't had much chance to do stuff to the nova recently, nothing new there... mainly because me and my girlfriend have bought a house together muhaha scary stuff.. and my insurance is up on the subaru next week and i cant justify spending another 800 odd quid on insurance and 40 quid on petrol per week, so it's time for a change...
anyway, i've got the engine running smooth now after adjusting the carb and choke cable properly, and fitting a new exhaust gasket ring thingy and i've started attacking the bodywork with filler/wire wheel/sander etc...
i've also bought myself a toffee wheel after hearing many good reviews.. and it's flippin great :d

kind of forgot where i was with this, need to start updating it more often :tard:
i was originally planning to get this on the road for pvs but i've been too busy sorting out new house and new car stuff so that hasn't happened, so the next aim is to get it to retro rides..
anyway, been doing some general sanding, filling and poking around for rust

Sourced some front lowering springs so swapped them over and chucked the front shocks back on along with the rear springs and shocks. i will wire wheel and hammerite the rear arches at somepoint.
