Hi everyone. I am from South Africa and have an opel monza 160i GSi. GM South Africa decided to put the engine of the Nova GSi into this car(E16SE). It has the Siemens unit for ignition control and Bosch ecu. I am trying to set the ignition timing on this car after changing the distributor and I'm struggling. As I advance the timing the idle speed also increases. Is there something that needs to be disconnected so that the ecu understands its in maintenance mode and stops advancing the timing? There is no vacuum advance. What is the correct timing settings for this engine. I really love this car but its no fun to drive with the power being down. Any help would be much appreciated.

hi. there is a specific way to set the timing, with the engine running, you disconnect the throttle switch & short out the wires in the loom connector with split pins or small wires. then use a timing light to set the dizzy timing with the timing mark on the crank pulley. this is only good for decent leaded fuel. if you run unleaded, you then need to retard the timing a couple of degrees until it runs ok. i don't know what grade you use in SA, so that is the best info i can offer.

Thanks a lot for the reply Mowgli. I was starting to get worried there for a bit that nobody knew the correct way to set the timing. Do you pehaps know which wires need to be shorted out on the TPS switch? We get 95 unleaded here in South Africa. I see that the car has an octane switch as well. Mine shows 95 and 97.

In that case the base timing will be as per the marks and the octane switch does the compensation.
I thought the TPS switch was closed on idle anyway so i dont see what shorting the pins achieves.
Also the idle speed must also be correct
