So I recently bought this lovely little 2 door saloon.
It arrived 4 days before PVS so I haven't done much as of yet but hope to get a great deal done in the future.

All I had time to do before PVS was clean bits up and fit a few shiny things I had knocking around :)

The engine bay is very tidy in terms of being rust free and paint work is spot on with no leaks anywhere.
So I decided to clean it up to show how tidy it truly is, this included fitting a few shiny things :)

Machine polished rocker cover fitted with hand polished oil filler cap.

Some say it's a good idea and some are saying it's completely useless.
I'm basically a magpie and like shiny clean things so it's going on

I'd have banged the oil breather back in to the filter. You might find the bay will stink of hot oil now...

At the beginning of December 2015 I was crashed into whilst stationary at a set of traffic lights! (Pics of damage below)

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm187/botedly/2%20Door%20Nova%20Saloon/IMG_3278_zps6cbjwpzg.jpg (http://s296.photobucket.com/user/botedly/media/2%20Door%20Nova%20Saloon/IMG_3278_zps6cbjwpzg.jpg.html)

What should have been a simple "third party at fault claim" turned into an absolute nightmare...

After having an engineer come out to assess the damage I was informed that the Nova was written off as a 'Category B' after it was involved in an accident on 20/01/2003. I was left confused and devastated by this news. I was adamant that this must be some sort of mistake so I began to investigate...

I found out from my insurer that it was More Than (RSA) that had written the vehicle off in 2003, I called them over and over until I finally got through to someone that could access previous total loss files. The very helpful guy accessed The Motor Insurance Anti Fraud and Theft Register (MIAFTR) and confirmed that the vehicle had been involved in an accident on 20/01/2003. He also confirmed that the damage was assessed on 27/01/2003. He then went onto to confirm that (wait for it, this is where things get even more sketchy) it was recorded as a Category B write off on 20/07/2004. Wait, what?!

So basically, it took them 18 months to decide that it was a write off? I don't think so...

The very helpful guy gave me the details of the team leader of the total loss department at More Than. I was told I might be able to write and request further information about the file as he couldn't find any details on the computer system.

Thinking I would have no chance of getting help from an insurance company I wasn't even paying, I thought I should do some investigating of my own.

I contacted all accident repair and restoration companies within 15 miles of the previous owners address (the old boy never travelled more than 15 miles per journey according to his journals). None had any record of the vehicle being in for repairs.

I then contacted the local police department with an incident reference I had found scribbled in between accident information. They had no details other than it was a reported indecent that required no attendance by the local police.

After weeks and weeks of hitting dead ends, I was losing the will with the Nova and was starting to look at Mk1 Jettas on Car and Classic...

My last chance was to write a letter to the team leader at More Than's total loss department with all the information/proof I had and beg for them to look into it...

On 15/03/2016 I received my letter back in the post, at first I thought they were returning my correspondence with a note saying they couldn't/wouldn't help me. But the compliment slip read: "Dear Mr Martin. We are terribly sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. It is quite clearly a mistake. We have removed the entry from MIAFTR."

I was frozen with shock and excitement. I fought an insurance company and won!

This whole ordeal has been an absolute nightmare. But I can safely say I'm never letting go of my lovely little Nova...

I am currently having to keep getting my insurer to chase the third party's insurer to give an update on when they will be paying for the damages.

Until I see the light at the end of this tunnel, I shall be cracking on with my plans.

With only a few weeks until PVS, I decided to start.

First of all, I needed to tidy up the hole I had hack in my rear arch when investigating the car's only real rust issue.

Pics below:

More screwdriver hacking went on.

Plated up and a bit of filler.

Flatted the first filler right down and added a better, smoother layer.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm187/botedly/IMG_5420_zpsqouctjoh.jpg (http://s296.photobucket.com/user/botedly/media/IMG_5420_zpsqouctjoh.jpg.html)

After more flatting and filler skims to make it as neat as possible with as little filler depth as I could get away with. It was time for primer.

I've always wanted to do something that has yet to be done to a Vauxhall Nova in the UK.

Thanks to the early 2000s and the ease of engine conversions in these cars, there's not much that hasn't already been done to a Nova...

So I looked to something that is a common thing to see in the modern modifying scene, but not yet done (successfully) on a Nova.

I had seen that someone had attempted to build an air ride system on a Nova Saloon not too long ago. But it was a 2 way system which really isn't ideal. I had also heard the owner continuously struggled to tackle leaks and rust on the car, gave up, and sold the car.

My idea was to build a custom 4 way air ride system on the car without making any alterations to the chassis or body of the car at all. I also challenged myself to be able to get the car seriously low without stretching tyres horrendous amounts or applying ludicrous amounts of camber.

So I got stick in.

I had to do this to fit blind rivet nuts that the rear air bags would screw into.

Me and the others I went to PVS with have agreed that we won't be showing there again.
The Saturday was brilliant! Relaxed, beers in the mild weather, watching Novas and old Astras rinse off Supras etc.

Sunday was diabolical. The individual display stand was a glorified overflow carpark. Not even a part of the main show area. With the stand being out of site, not only could I not enjoy the show with having to constantly go back to check on the car, but whilst I wasn't there someone managed to scuff/scratch my wing (presumably by sitting on it with a pair of jeans).

Absolutely piss poor organisation from Kelsey. There was plenty of space for the ID stand in the main arena.

Also a bit peeved that none of the publications (Fast Car, PV etc) even bothered to walk round at take pics of the ID stand. Who doesn't love flicking through albums trying to find pics of your own car? (haha)

I was please enough with the welding. I had to get a friend to do it as after trying to teach myself, I realised it'd be best if I took more practice time before burning holes in my pride and joy lol

I'm handy with cutting, filler and paint so just needed a skilled set of hands to do a decent job of plating it up :)

The insurance fiasco is a proper ball ache but hopefully getting somewhere with it now.

I like this, looks really solid and clean, my nova hatch rusted in the exact same spot, had to cut nearly 300mm out of the side to get to it!! Did you have to repair the inside too? I had to cut the whole inside out to repair too!!

Sunday was diabolical.

Best 3 words I've read about PVS this year!!! Billing will be epic!!

Only a tiny 20mm x 20mm plate was needed to patch up the inner arch. Sills were still solid as can be.
Billing will be very good this year! I need to get paid up on here as I really want to make my debut on PNG this year :)

Really liking this, are the PVS pics at it lowest? Saw it there and really liked it, didn't know it was on air.

That is it's lowest until I do some arch work to get it to tuck wheels into arches better.
Also with it being on 15" alloys, you struggle to go lower. Any lower and the sump will be on the ground :)

Sump on the ground is the right level!

That might be one for next year. Arch work and maybe smaller wheels. I'm just glad the system works properly for now lol

My Cam belt snapped on the A5 last night. Got recovered and is now safe in her garage, will push the car out if I can tonight :)

Yeh had one go on me before on a previous nova and it was fine, that was due to me ignoring the warning signs...

This time, on a car only just tickling 60k on its second belt I thought it'd be fine for a bit... Turns out the garage that looked after the car when the old boy had it used cheap rubbish...

Will have it done within an hour this Saturday :)

Really well actually. Obviously a small amount of 'tramlining' but that is due to the wide/low offset wheels.

So I haven't been able to get the nova to idle properly without it cutting out.

Turns out the partial load enrichment valve was fucked...

Bought a carb service kit not long ago so bit the bullet and used what little common sense I have to guess how to replace everything.

Turns out it wasn't too hard.
