Hydraulic lifters How can you tell if they are not working probably when they are out of the car and can they be repaired and if so how ?
If they are out of a running engine you shouldn't be able to compress them by hand. I once had one that could be and we fixed it by putting a new ball bearing in (it was scratched on the surface).

simply put the lifter in the vice (with a rag round it, squeeze it a bit, then use a small screwdriver to pop the retaining ring off... then undo the vice, and take the lifter apart. i recommend using a non-abrasive cleaner to get the crap out of it, then re assemble it, with a tiny amount of fresh oil in it, then put them back in the engine
