My timing belt keeps drifting to one side of my can pulley, is it to do with how far out the crank pulley is?

Check the end float in your crank and cam. Cam is an easy fix by changing out the plate at the distributor end that hold in the cam. If it's the crank you need new bearings.

Ok must be cam as engine has only done 20 miles since a full rebuild

Clock the crank and the cam to see whats moving. The cam float can be adjusted by the shim plate behind the distributor. The crank float will be due to thrust bearings but the water pump is worth checking. As is the section of the belt for the shape of the pulley teeth.

Belts can be anywhere across the guides; do not be worrying.
