View Full Version : Brake upgrade question

So I've got a '91 Nova with an engine swap, so there's quite a bit more weight over the front wheels.
It still has the stock brakes.

Is there anything that could be considered as a "direct replacement and upgrade"?

I've been told Astra discs and calipers are fairly direct, but I need some confirmation on this.

Currently have 13" rims on it at the moment, so if I can upgrade the brakes without having to increase rim size it would be even better, but if not, hit away regardless.

Thanks in advance.

Rear drums can remain as such, no need to switch those with discs. That, I'm guessing, would be considerably more difficult to do.

Usual upgrade is 256x24 discs and ATE calipers but they probably won't go under your 13s. Go for some vented 236mm from a Corsa! Bolt on upgrade

From what would the 256x24 discs and calipers be from?
And I'm guessing the 236mm ones would be from the Corsa B/bubble car?
My mom had one of those. I thought they're a single plate disc.

So I could take the disc and caliper from the Corsa B and switch them out without any fabrication?

256 will be on lots of the bigger Vauxhalls in the scrappy e.g. cavalier and calibra. They bolt on fine just get the carrier with them

I think 236 might be a sporty corsa brake but I'm sure someone will confirm. They did a vented one

I found a set of Calibra brakes, but they're a 5 stud, as opposed to 4. Well, the ones I found, at least.

And I see. Those might be a bit difficult to find where I am.

Corsa Sri/sport/gsi calipers and discs will be fine.

the 256mm brakes might not fit under your wheels

Generally as a rule of thumb on the Astra's , Cavailer's and Calibra's 4 stud discs are generally a 256mm disc , 5 stud is usually 284mm or 288mm depending upon year. Early Vectra's in 4 stud may have the 256mm stuff as well.

Easiest way would be to get some known sized ones from on here or Migweb and then you know what size you are getting.

You can get 256x20 set ups off diesels and the likes too?

Thank you. I will start looking for some online and maybe order a set.
Hopefully without breaking the bank so much.

What do you mean? Like the 1.5L TD Nova type diesels?

Thank you very much mate. My friend has an Astra that might be scrapped, so I could take the front discs off him maybe.

No the astra 1.7s maybe?

No the astra 1.7s maybe?

Those would be perfect, considering that's the engine I have in my Nova.

Well, the Isuzu 1.7L TD, not the Opel one.
