You'll be learning to weld then.. After a bit of love and care she'll be all right.

Carefull where you put your axel stands, one is barely on in early pic. get them on the chassis leg. Good and strong and safe.
I'd jack up on the rear beam too. Saves crushing the sills.

ledpen
08-04-15, 04:04 PM
Yea I will fix the axel stands, got quoted 250 quid to do all the welding, engine bay all seam welded, any rot cut out and new pieces made and welded in

Thats a good price if they do a good job :) doesn't look a bad shell once them bits are sorted out

What are your plans for it? (Sorry if i have missed it if you have already said)

ledpen
15-04-15, 08:48 PM
I plan on dropping a 2l redtop or maby 8v, want the car to be mint but not worried if it's show condition, nice set of speed lines and gsi bumper, nice bucket seats in the front but keep the rest of interior standard, I have full blue sr interior for it, will be driving in at weekends and good days just for a bit of fun

Update: I got the lend of a welder with flux core no gas wire, did most of the welding with this, I then bought a second hand mig welder for myself and a couple of bottles of gas and finished the welding with that

So whats the plans then?

ledpen
22-09-15, 09:17 PM
Yea il be painting over the engine bay with 2k high build then 2k top coat/lacquer, plan is to have the engine bay brand new, I have all new arms and bushes etc, brackets and tie rods etc have been sand blasted and painted with black hammerite once the front end is done il drop the back axel and do the same kinda thing.

This is going to be a weekend car for a bit of fun

If you're going to the lengh of having parts shot blasted, why not get them powder coated. Lasts longer and looks better.

First of the supplys bought, 2k high build with hardener, mixing ratio says 2:1 and doesn't require thinners, seems odd as usually 4:1 with 10% thinners on usual 2k high build? Also bought some black gravitex and a gallon of thinners for cleaning guns etc

Need some opions on this..... I will be spraying gravitex in the inner arches and up along the sills, the sills have alot of surface rust and crud on them, I was thinking of hitting the sills with a flap disc or wire wheel to clean them up then put some rust converter on, the sills are not rotten they just need cleaned up, to save me getting the spray equipment back out I was just going to paint the bare metal on the sills with hammerite then gravitex over the lot masking everything off etc, will this be an ok job or rash?

Stonechip products over Hammerite is a terrible idea, been there done that and paid the price.

Rust convertor, etch primer, paint to seal it up then stonechip would be my favoured approach for the sills I think. Could maybe do stonechip straight over primer. Fire up the compressor again, and get a schultz gun for the stonechip too.

Just checking alignment of the wings, I'm getting restless now lol want to get the engine bay in paint before the frost hits

ledpen
20-10-15, 08:21 PM
I'm at the point now where I'm ready to spray colour in the engine bay. I've been racking my brain and need some advice, a few months ago I bough half a litre of holts dupli color colour match paint from halfords and 1 litre of ready to use clear lacquer. I started reading more and more about spray paint and found that most people prefer basecoat/clear coat in 2k, 1st thing is 2k scares me and would rather not use it. However I've spent a long time to get to this stage and don't want to mess things up using the wrong/not ideal paint. I can get 2k base coat and 2k clear for around 75 quid I would also need to buy a decent spray mask for around 50 quid, or..... I can go ahead and use the halfords stuff and 1k clear and keep costs down but most importantly I can enjoy spraying it using this stuff and not be in a rush and also most importantly not worry about all the health risks with spraying 2k.

While I'm waiting on some replys I went ahead and tried some test spraying on an old wing with the paint and lacquer I already had.
I masked 3 areas on the old wing and sanded down with 600 grit.
I'm going to spray 3 coats of colour and 3 coats of clear,
After everything is fully cured I'm going to sand the 1st area with 1500 grit and hand polish, 2nd area with 2500 grit and hand polish and the 3rd area is going to be just left with no sanding just to see if it's really necessary to sand and polish as a comparison.
My reasons for this is to see how good the finish comes out with the cheaper paint I already have and hopefully help me with my decision as to wither or not to spend more money on the 2k stuff.
The reason why I'm hand polishing is because I will not get a polish machine in and around the engine bay and need to see how hand polishing measures up and if at all its needed

So after the test pieces on the wing I've came to the conclusion that the paint and lacquer I have is rubbish, it went on really well and cut and polished really well but it's too soft, easily scratched even with my finger nail, also when I cleaned with grease remover the paint started to come off onto the cloth, il invested in 2k base coat clearcoa system.

How long did you leave the paint to harden before you started trying to cut and polish it?

2k s definitely the way to go but the paint needs at least a week to harden and even then it wont be fully hard

2 coats of base and 2 coats of 2k lacquer, it looks really well in my opinion, I don't think I'm even going to cut or buff. I did make one silly mistake I mixed the clear coat at 4:1 instead of 2:1 I've been assured it will still cure but may take a bit more time

Great work! Engine bay looks brilliant, defo went for the best option with the 2k. In the past id use solvent base and 2k lacquer. But solvent is hard to get now, water based has taken its place. Was your colour/base coat also 2k?

ledpen
27-10-15, 10:54 PM
The paint has no hardener it flashes off like solvent and dries with a matt finish when you apply the 2k lacquer this give the gloss finish and the 2k lacquer is mixed with a hardener, I'm no expert in spray painting, I think you can buy standard colours called gloss colours these contain no metalic flakes etc and these paints are mixed with hardener and leave a very shinny gloss finish that requires no lacquer, mine is a metalic paint so it needed to be done the basecoat/clear coat way

Small sandblasting cabinet filled with kids play sand, the play sand has to be bone dry, I did have it filled with glass bead but it's too soft for the heavy stuff, also my compressor is a bit weak for running it only 25l, so it does take a but of time to get a good finish, I usually have to cover the really dirty bits with oven cleaner and give them a power wash before blasting

IMO stainless bolts on a sump pan isn't the way to go; get some HTs. What gasket sealant do you use for the cork?

Also plastic pulleys for a cam belt would be a constant worry if the engine's being used hard.

IMO stainless bolts on a sump pan isn't the way to go; get some HTs. What gasket sealant do you use for the cork?

Also plastic pulleys for a cam belt would be a constant worry if the engine's being used hard.
I never used any gasket sealer I thought sealer on cork was a big No No, I thought that was the point of a cork gasket, and the plastic pulleys are part of the c20xe timing belt kit
