View Full Version : rear chasis leg welding
I was checking the underside and found some rot in the rear chasiss legs, it doesn't look bad but once I have stripped the springs, rear exhaust etc to get a better look I'll take a picture.
For metal I have a pegeout 206 wing (I assume too thin) and some 3mm stuff from when I put spreader plates in the xe. Are either of these suitable for repairing the rear chasis leg or do i need a specific thickness of steel?
Thanks
I would have aimed for 1.5mm to maybe 2mm steel to redo the chassis legs, panels will be too thin and 3mm might work but be a bit hefty
Thanks, the 3mm is very difficult to work with, if it is just a wee patch I might use it but if it turns out to be a lot of shaping/welding I will look at 1.5 mm. Thanks for the advice.
Here is the picture. As it is close to the spring support, my intention is to cut out the rot obviously and then put a patch going over either edge of the leg and then along side the spring support. If I can get it slightly under the support ring that would be ideal and then i would have to weld it to the spring suport at that edge.

I'd use 2mm minimum in that
I'd use 2mm minimum in that
Do you reckon on attempting the 3mm steel then?
2mm would be fine.
3mm is ridiculous.its a nova not a land rover chassis

Or just use said steel for some turrets
Well I welded it last night and painted it tonight. Not the prettiest weld but I hope it is strong enough to last for many years which is the point.

good work!
Looks good I know it's a real pain to weld above your head arms getting trapped and sparks in the hair
