I was sent a new Piper Camshaft for my 1.4 8v BUT someone had installed the 8mm steel ball bearing in the dizzy end of the camshaft is there a way to get it out without damaging the cam (new camshaft is in the post to me)

only way I can think of is to put a 4-5mm hole in it and use a stud extractor

Harden Steel ball bearing will be hard to drill and then screw anything into it, Stuart.

weld something to it?

It will need some dam good precision welding at only 8mm at its widest point.
I all so play with the idea of grinding it or trying to glue some thing to it and pull it out.

If the only reason you want it out is for fitting the distributor, just grind 5-6mm off the distributor drive pin as you dont need it now anyway.

I would prefer not to grind a part of my brand new motorsports dizzy

Why not? Stick it in the lathe and machine it tidy. The ball is only there for dispack engines anyway as the o-ring on the drive would normally block the cam. Chances are anyone who wants a motorsport distributor will have a plugged cam anyway. Its not like the drive cant be pressed off and replaced in the future...

Grind an old one then swap the drives over. You just tap out the roll pin and it comes off. Some dizzys don't fit without a bit of fettling anyway.

Just not keen to mess with the new dizzy as it is under warranty

Oh we'll. good luck drilling your BB.

That's all so not such a good option the drilling, that's why I'm asking on here maybe someone has already done it or someone has a way that I have not thought about yet.

If you grind down a spare dizzy drive you can swap it back then claim the warranty. As long as you don't get it 180deg out there won't be a problem.

I'll look at it when I'm back at the car on Thursday but still open to other ideas

You dont gave many options.
1.remove the ball (somehow)
2.modify the drive
3.find a new cam which hasn't been balled yet
4.go dispack and standalone ign.

There is a new cam in the post with the apologies of Piper for fitting the BB when it should have come separate to be fitted at the costumers choices but it may come to late for this week when I have time to fix the car.

Would a,really strong magnet pull it out mate?

I doubt it but I'll give it a go

No. Iirc they are heated and cooled to press fit (cam hot, bearing cold)

I'd be drilling it out. Seen it done a few times, not easy. But not really hard either.

A carbide cutter would drill it out no problem.

Send it back to piper and tell them to send what you paid for

did anyone manage to pull the ball out your shaft in the end? i've been thinking about this post for weeks.

Not yet I've now got the replacement one without ball bearing so I'll give the other to my friend who works a high end precision engineering firm from him to remove it and then up on ebay for sale.

Whats the idea behind having the ball bearing in there anyway? sound like its something that some people do and others dont?

phunkynova

It depends on which dizzy drive you have as to whether you need the ball bearing or not.

Ive had a similar issue recently i aquired a c16se cam with ball bearing in the end i just knocked it further into the cam an shaved a lil off the end of the dizzy.
