X16XE - What Grade Oil - Also What Gearbox Oil?

So, I'll be doing a full rebuild on my X16XE engine in the coming weeks. I've already got Newman 264 cams fitted but will also be fitted ARP rod bolts so the limiter can be raised.

Obviously at the moment I'm running Millers Trident 10w40 semi synthetic engine oil.

The car will be used for trackdays/fast road applications and so because of this i've been told by a few people to run either 10w50 or 20w50 engine oil.

What would people recommend?

I've seen that Millers do their CFS Motorsport engine oil but only do 10w40 and 10w50 in a fully synthetic form.


Whilst we're on a similar subject too, what gearbox oil would be best to use in an F15CR. I'm currently using Dexron III ATF oil as it was mentioned to me before or should I resort to a decent EP80w90?

I thought all gm boxes ran on EP80-90. Its all ive ever seen them listed to use.

my views are:
use ep80w-90.

use reasonably cheap oil & change it after every 3000 miles, or every track day. the whole purpose of synthetic is simply for extended service periods.
as for the grade, i always used to use 15w40 on my 8v engines, but i found some makes weren't as good, and suffered followers bouncing i now use 15w40 oil from JCB (it comes in 205lt drums & is ace)... so i'd say find one you get on with & stick to it. isn't the factory recommendation for 15w50?

I used to run 20w50 in my old 8v. It used to tap like hell after a good thrash when using 10w40 or even 15w40

All GM boxes do run EP 80/90 but some people say that ATF is a better oil to use. I don't know why, but even some race/rally people recommend it?

Cheers Mowgli, that's worth noting. So it seems that it comes down to personall preference then and trial and error etc.

Staggy, that seems to be what people are saying. As the 10w40 ends up too thin as such after a 'ragging' so 20w50 is a better oil to use. What were you using? Fully, semi or mineral?

we're going back 8-10 years ago now, but I think it was semi....

it was just the cheapest stuff I could find lol came in a blue 5ltr tin. Not much help I know, but it definitely worked for me.

its bmw m3 specific too so cant be bad
