sparse placing, world war II, food rations style.
i hope it does something about the drone.

still got a few more spots to do at the front.
the back end will get done at some point too.

Think of it like this.you buy a window half the size needed for the opening its going into.
or in more crude terms, trying to wipe your ar5e after a vindaloo using a cotton bud.

Don't you regret not creating a thread asking if that it was pointless before doing it.

jimbob-mcgrew
20-01-15, 05:27 PM
nah not really, as i cant afford a whole roll of the stuff, to do it properly.

the seats, dash, and carpets were already taken out anyway, so its not a major loss.

it cant be any worse than it was anyway lol

Imo theres no point.half the appeal of old cars is the noise and feel.
filling it full of sound deadenings pointless.heres a cheaper option...buy some earplugs.

jimbob-mcgrew

i keep some in the glovebox already lol
any drive longer than 45 minutes, and its a must to wear them, or it'll literally fcuk my hearing up for days.

ive got harsh tinnitus, and the noise doesnt do me any favours.

its my own fault for buying an old car, and then being stupid enough to stick a close ratio box on a car that spends half its life on the motorway.

Should have simply used the sheet in one piece on the bulkhead and floor.

i see what you done there...but from what ive been told small patches are for centers of larger thinner metal areas ie doors and rear quartos...buy seriously at 12 quid who gives a flying **** if it works or not lol

I'd have saved up and done it properly, I understand the tinnitus thing though... Too much bass over the years battered my ears :(

I see the dodgy thinking behind this. A single square foot of the stuff on the inside of a rear quarter or similar can make a huge difference.

If a Nova makes your ears bleed, you would be screaming to be Brown Bread, after half an hour in my MR2 turbo.
Decat, 3" downpipe and 5Zigen Miracle Fireball - sans bung.

There is an awesome joke in there, somewhere.

i though you were more of a lager man........

when i get round to taking my carpets out to clean them, i'm planning to stick some hy-load tanking in. it comes on a large roll & is self adhesive & best of all, i managed to get a couple of leftover rolls of it stashed at work

a kid near me whos in to his audio stuff covered the whole inside of his car with some stuff called silent coat! funking hell its unreal you can knock any panel on it and it feels absoloutly solid the difference is unbelievable n he said its pretty cheap!

jimbob-mcgrew
21-01-15, 07:24 PM
the stuff i used is silent coat..... just feeble amounts of it lol

believe it or not, what little coverage you see in the pictures is 8 sheets of almost A4 size.

i reckon maybe 50-ish, possibly more, would be needed to do the whole car properly.

i spotted a big 1 metre x 10 metre roll on ebay tho, for £80, which im sure would be plenty, its not silent coat, just unbranded stuff, but would probably do the job.

turbojolt

were you buy it jim if it makes panels solid i could do with a few rolls lol

i havent scanned around much, but this seller seems good, where i got some from :

there 'bulk pack' of 40, are larger sized sheets than the others. probably enough for a cars worth... £80

not sure if it will patch holes up tho TJ lol

i added another 6 sheets. a strip down the sill sides, more on the floorpan, and more behind the dashboard, before i put it all back together.

final conclusion - it sounds a bit better.

the motorway drone is about 10 mph less. so 60's previous noise is now later on at 70 mph, which is the main thing i was trying to better.

sat at standstill idling is a bit quieter now.

when the engine starts to scream, its seems quite a bit better too. difficult to explain, but its muffled a fair bit. less higher sound frequencies i think, as you can still hear a bit of the bassy end, from the general dampening.

its most noticable at low rpm id say, much quieter under 3 grand. cruising slow on 30 / 40 mph roads is alot more chilled out.

stones and stuff flicking up and hitting the underside is a fair bit quiter too. it doesnt sound like bits of the car are falling off anymore lol

i wasnt expecting magic, but for £20 ... and the sake of adding only 3 kilo's ish, im pretty impressed :thumb:

i will have to do the back end of the car at some point, to better it a bit more.
