View Full Version : xe mpg
Now that the xe is converted back for road use and after nearly three thousand easy miles and only a snapped clutch cable, I decided to do a rough mpg test.
A 350 mile round trip, fill to the neck at the same pump before and after, driving a bit like a grandad (rarely above 4000 rpm or below 2000 rpm), it did...wait for it, hard to believe......44mpg (well 44.3 actually but there has to be some room for error) a slight contrast to my days at Knockhill in it where I would be under 20 mpg!

I would have said 45 is achievable.
Economy isnt about driving like an OAP (though it helps) but more to do with moving at a decent speed. If you are stationary/idling the engine is effectively doing 0mpg. When I had my Cav GSi with its fuel computer, the mpg wouldn't be all that impressive until you got upto 60+mph in 4th or 5th gear, from there on it was fantastic.
So tip-toeing around town doesnt = good mpg.
Well I agree with what you said, I was doing mainly 60mph on rural roads. I just didn't really expect it to do so well.

Spudly, who was a regular on here recently had a status on facebook about how he'd taken his V6 Vectra out for a hiding & came back with the best MPG he'd seen since owning it. Proof right there.
Also, I've found that my XE'd cars did the same overall mpg to most of the small engined (1.2 Novas) I've owned when commuting. Cold starts are best kept to a minimum I found as thats when 2.0's consume fuel noticeably over small engines & when your foot is flat to the floor.
make sure the CTS is good & not at fault & that the cambelt timing is spot on, for best performance/economy. There are lots of tweeks you can do with XE's to optimise them. Most are pretty ropey & old now.

Bugger mpg twin 48s and hit the loud pedal lol
my let is shocking on fuel
My XE isn't too bad either - but that's down to a decent map. If you can keep to a steady speed, you're laughing.
I was Suprised with my LET when taking it easy in 6th fuel lasted longer than i expected.... Having a play though is a different story!
I could only ever get around 35 out of mine with a XE.

Really? My let is great, drive off boost and i can get 37mpg over a long drive.
45+ mpg is easily achievable in a light nova

My combo van was averaging about 35 with an Xe in it when I had it so not surprised at a Nova doing better.

Economy's come right back up since having all the jets corrected on mine because of induction breathing improvements. There was a fair bit of intake cam advancement done at the same time & it runs slightly lean below 1500rpm on 45's. I'm told another hole needs drilling to remedy this, but need to research it thoroughly before.

Your XE had problems! You think that's good economy from your LET on a long run? Errr.
I know the performance is worlds apart, but my wee 1600 8v turbo returned better mpg than when it was n/a on a motorway trip & would just about cruise at 100mph off-boost.
Bar this threads i've never seen people get more than 35 out of a xe.
And i thought that was very good yes, 375-400 miles to a tank.

Both my XE's were easily in the 40's. The Cav wasn't quite as good but I put that down to the weight & commuting/cold starts.
Perhaps you have heavy boots. LOL
