After buying the GTE 2 month ago I finally made a start today stripping it out.

The plan is to go bare shell rebuild. I have been sourcing panels for the last few months and got most of what I need, mostly gm ones.

It was advertised on eBay as mint, it isn't and wasn't happy when I travelled 250 miles to pick it up and was presented with this, needless to say I payed nowhere near the asking price!

As it stands at the moment:

So next steps are to take running gear out and get it to a bare she'll, then start the dreaded job of taking all the undersell off!

Looks nice mark there all standard ish trouble spots not a fan of fiberglass repairs just makes re doing them a dusty job lol
Not that bad though I will show you some of the basket cases I've welded !!!

Spot on, cheers David, back chassis legs are in a sad state, could do with finding a shell to cut some better ones out of. One of the biggest ball aches is its been fairly well stripped in the past for welding and the clown that's put it back together ain't used the original screws/bolts in a lot of places, most of the interior is held together with b&q self tappers! Cheers lads, will be back on it at the weekend, hopefully get it stripped down to a bare shell.

A bit more progress made this weekend, it's pretty much stripped down now, just brake pipes to drop off once it's on its side and then doors, boot, and bonnet to take off.

Tried taking sound deadening off the bulkhead but it's gone brittle and think it's going to end up coming off in bits so have give up on that for now and started digging to see what has been covered up with fibreglass, filler and under seal!!

Some findings so far,

Behind l/h strut top

The bit that annoys me must is the a**e hole that made this mess at the r/h front chassis leg
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/EEB2091C-7CE6-4E6C-A6B4-21AB6A56F582_zpss49brwpv.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/EEB2091C-7CE6-4E6C-A6B4-21AB6A56F582_zpss49brwpv.jpg.html)

Plan of attack at the moment is to start on the front, battery box, and both side strut tops, thinking if drilling off the inner wing flitch panels to get better access to rot, then new front panel.

Got most panels I need (well what I can get)

-Rear quarters (1 gm, 1 pattern??)
-Rear inner wheelarche repair panels (klokkerholm)
-Full boot floor (gm)
-Tailgate skin (gm)
-Back panel (gm)
-2 sills, however don't think I need them (klokkerholm)
-2 front wings (gm, thanks to Dave Buttler [emoji106])
-Battery tray repair panel (klokkerholm)
-full front panel (gm)
-rear spring platform plates (klokkerholm)

Could really do with a couple of decent rear chassis legs out of a donor, will continue looking.

Just one mate tailgate skin ?this is not worth doing IMO plenty of tailgates to use
And your battery tray looks ok just add the minimum into it looking at that

looks ok though

mark.cowperthwaite
19-01-15, 07:01 AM
Tailgate skin was a mistake, didn't check part numbers when ordering! Might sack it off for a decent second hand one yet.

Started taking underseal off last night, in doing so I exposed some more bits that need attention.
A little bit and bottom of wheel arch
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/093F90F5-FE64-4CB9-9F57-31CD66C3607B_zpsrcmlahvt.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/093F90F5-FE64-4CB9-9F57-31CD66C3607B_zpsrcmlahvt.jpg.html)
Dug the fibreglass out of the front edge
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/57CA779C-A7FC-4DE1-92A5-0EBFF3D44100_zps3ojna0aa.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/57CA779C-A7FC-4DE1-92A5-0EBFF3D44100_zps3ojna0aa.jpg.html)

I soon got bored of scraping so decided to cut out some rot. Firstly drilled off the drivers side flitch panel to get better access to repair the hole I could see from the back.
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/842C8DCD-DD88-4EE8-8928-C0E79282F07D_zpszhbbxnyo.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/842C8DCD-DD88-4EE8-8928-C0E79282F07D_zpszhbbxnyo.jpg.html)

Then proceeded to cut out the bad boy ready to make up the repair section
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/67ECFADC-EF50-4498-95DE-7C1CCCC6BBFC_zpsk3sqehvd.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/67ECFADC-EF50-4498-95DE-7C1CCCC6BBFC_zpsk3sqehvd.jpg.html)
As I was then cleaning the surface up with wire wheel I came across more filler to from edge of strut top
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/DF6B63DD-BD9C-4DF7-9931-BFEB27C8A0AF_zpsyhijvntf.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DF6B63DD-BD9C-4DF7-9931-BFEB27C8A0AF_zpsyhijvntf.jpg.html)

Although not overly bad and repairable I'm now wanting a pair of inner wings as I want this to be mint when done, if I can't source any then will have to resort to repairing.

While on the hunt for panels, next job up is the battery tray.....

There always going on that strut top inner wing tbh I'd just plate that

mark.cowperthwaite
12-02-15, 09:30 PM
It's been a few weeks since last update and made some reasonable progress. I managed to source a pair of inner wings thanks to Dave & Matt.
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/D31953E2-53D8-42D5-9B76-2DA84F07E776_zpsihsmt6ky.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/D31953E2-53D8-42D5-9B76-2DA84F07E776_zpsihsmt6ky.jpg.html)
So cracked on and cut out the right hand inner wing
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/9FFF416F-4DD3-45E2-8F21-7F37AD003561_zpsocdsitqa.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/9FFF416F-4DD3-45E2-8F21-7F37AD003561_zpsocdsitqa.jpg.html)
Then while access was easier decided to sort the battery tray, cut out the rot
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/1F202551-30AF-4CE8-988F-95C2B5F84CAE_zpsd9p8mpkh.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/1F202551-30AF-4CE8-988F-95C2B5F84CAE_zpsd9p8mpkh.jpg.html)
And trimmed the repair panel to shape, swaged the edges to allow the joint to sit flush
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/B7CC645A-AD11-4900-869B-58673B91D49C_zpseoahoo1a.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/B7CC645A-AD11-4900-869B-58673B91D49C_zpseoahoo1a.jpg.html)
Then welded it up, flattened it off and give a coat of etch
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/60136DDD-4427-4BE9-A1B1-B10FC55BF237_zpsswxm0te0.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/60136DDD-4427-4BE9-A1B1-B10FC55BF237_zpsswxm0te0.jpg.html)
Then once that was inner fitted the new inner wing
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/36DC50FA-5EB7-4F32-B0D6-2FFD33D6E94B_zpsfb5yefie.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/36DC50FA-5EB7-4F32-B0D6-2FFD33D6E94B_zpsfb5yefie.jpg.html)
And finally refitted the Flitch panel
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/9D5228C4-ABA3-4BB8-B6F8-848AD3946A77_zpsekxrjvny.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/9D5228C4-ABA3-4BB8-B6F8-848AD3946A77_zpsekxrjvny.jpg.html)

Now on to the left hand side and do the same and I can then do the front panel. Feels good to making some progress now, hopefully the enthusiasm will continue!

I went to put wax in the cavities etc and ended up repairing a hole I discovered in my rear chasiss leg and three holes in the splash panels when preparing a Nova I just bought also described as "mint" by the seller. He was a twaat!

I have to say I am relieved to have not found as many things like you have but, good on you for doing the job properly, It will save you lots of hassle later on and you will know your Nova is solid. Why do people use fibreglass on decent cars?

I did similar work to a gte I had a coupe of years ago, took the flitch panel off like you've done repaired that area along with the battery tray I couldn't stretch to buying new panels tho. the previous owner had chicken meshed and fibre glassed most of the inner splash guards, what a bloody mess! nothing worse than fixing peoples bodges. will keep an eye on this build mate. you've made a nice start with it!

Brilliant work, I wish Id of been able to find repair panels instead of making them from scratch. I understand what you mean, it takes twice as long to remove someone else's bodge and repair it than it would of done to do it properly in the first place. Keep up the good work

Currently on with putting front panel in and mocking it all up with lights, bumper, grill before welding it up which is taking some time.

Also managed to purchase another shell with good rear legs so will be chopping that up soon too.

Great progress!

Question - Was the battery tray repair panel GM or reproduction? Where did you source it from?

Keep up the good work.

Cheers lads, soon have the front end ticked off.

Kev, it's a klockerholm repair panel, comes quite a bit bigger than the piece I put in. Can't just find where I got it from, will find invoice and let you know, carbodypanels.co.uk do them though. It did take a bit of work to get it to fit right but just patience as with and repair panel.

It's spotted to chassis leg, along back of strut top onto bulkhead and also the flitch panel overlaps and spotted to it.

It didn't look to bad at a first pass but getting the wing gaps right over the indicators is proving a right pain in the..... Also found that front bumper backing is bent and stretched the bumper aswell so now looking for a mint front bumper and backing if anyone knows of anything.

Bought two other novas for parts aswell one bare she'll which has one good rear leg in and also a full car which is well ripe up top but just want for bits and bobs, clips etc...

Loaded up redneck style!

Been a long time since an update. I have been busy finishing off another project while trying to source some more panels, quick pic before moving on to nova stuff!
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/11F77565-4770-46AA-9508-D11CBDE1AEE9_zpshfvmvxdj.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/11F77565-4770-46AA-9508-D11CBDE1AEE9_zpshfvmvxdj.jpg.html)

So... Managed to get hold of a pair of rear inner arches and a shell to cut the rear legs out of so time to start chopping!

Cut centre of boot floor out to make it easier to get in and do some bracing
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/7CE6544F-21DE-4A6A-8E2C-912B3E3B8319_zpsmqve1pb4.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/7CE6544F-21DE-4A6A-8E2C-912B3E3B8319_zpsmqve1pb4.jpg.html)
And then a simple bar to pic up on rear beam mounts and stitched to sills as a jig to locate new legs

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/2EE4822C-DBB2-42C7-BF3D-2DA134B5E00E_zpshrowwr56.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/2EE4822C-DBB2-42C7-BF3D-2DA134B5E00E_zpshrowwr56.jpg.html)

Then happy to remove inner wheel arches while trying to move around the bracing..!

Still a bit of work to do cleaning all spot welds off and make some form of jig to locate the rear of the chassis legs and then need to strip the other car to cut the legs out of.

Bad to see how much rust is hiding in the chassis legs.

Jeepers, that looks terrible, just hope mine isn't that bad inside the rear chassis rails!

Fair do's though, you certainly deserve massive praise for pressing on with the restoration, it'd break many lesser men, me included

Loving the bike by the way, I can see why you got distracted, hopefully you'll be using it on some classic trials?

Well finally after 6 months there is progress and finally have 2 chassis legs ready to install.

So since last time the old knackered legs came out after some additional bracing was added and points to pick up on axle mounts as a jig
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/Solway19/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/90F6C0DF-FD18-4C7F-95F6-47C38CD5B7B9_zps80nkijot.jpg (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Solway19/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/90F6C0DF-FD18-4C7F-95F6-47C38CD5B7B9_zps80nkijot.jpg.html)

Old legs good for scrap

Then got to work cutting donor legs out which looked mint when in the car but unfortunately not as good when out but at least they were original to work with so set to work

Firstly made a jig on inch ply to mount leg to before attacking with air hacksaw (not got any pics)

Bought a shrinker/stretcher from frost which was mint for making side sections

So this

So after a few months out and some serious thinking about selling up, there has been a little more progress.

Chopped the bottom out of the inner and middle sill and used the back of a full sill as a template to build the rest back up to.
