the little hole in the selector box, that haynes says to slide a drill bit into.

theres a sprung loaded rod on my box, that when pushed in, appears to lock the box in the place it needs to be.

is it ok to use this standard spring rod, to set the gears up, or should it be removed completely, and a drill bit used instead ?

1 other question... is the 4 speed nova gearbox linkage arm the same size as the 5 speed ? ... just trying to suss out whether ive got a problem with the linkage, or if the synchro bits in the box are worn, as its doesnt like to go into 2nd sometimes, and generally feels a bit ' off ' how it should be

Use the spring loaded pin. Thats what its there for.

Yes

Have you cut the notch off the selector housing if your converting from 4-5 speed?

That's a later selector turret so does away with the drill bit. OK to use

it did setup ok using the box spring pin, and i chopped the lug off the stopblock for 5th.

i dont know how many miles it covered before i got it.
there was a large amount of swarf stuck to the magnet on the oil level check bolt, so im guessing its probably just worn ?

ive heard thinner oil sometimes helps.
im using - green manual trans fluid 80/90, so prob not the best stuff
