i was thinking of bolting a 10mm bit of mdf or plywood to the underside of the parcel shelf, to reinforce it for some speakers.

anyone done this ? .. had any problems with the shelf breaking, or sagging ?

I used 15mm mdf (on a spare shelf I had) and used 5mm bolts with locking nuts bolted through the speakers onto the board. It does not rattle or sag and would say it gives it some more bass over just fitting speakers to a standard shelf.

i was thinking a long strip of 13cm speakers for mine. send all 4 sets of headunit wires to the back, one for each speaker.

mounted closer to the sides of the shelf, for better load bearing, and hidden away under a piece of cloth.

I used to mount the speakers under a mdf shelf like your idea and used acoustic carpet (as it lets a lot of air and sound through) over the top for the flush look. It also stopped chavs (late 90s chavs)from breaking into my car and stealing my parcel shelf lol

I went the whole hog and made an acoustic shelf to take the speakers. Didn't take too long and didn't cost too much in bits. Looked original and you could put stuff on the shelf as the speakers had stiff mesh on them.

good fun doing that.

I agree stuart. If your sh1te with a jigsaw the carpet will cover it. If you are making a whole new shelf just draw around your old one and cut it a couple of mm short to allow for the carpet. The tighter the better as it will add more bass :thumb:

Yep, its not got to be pretty as the cloth fixes that :) given the time taken to fit a piece of wood etx you might aswell do the job all the way

I found a guy on ebay years ago that made and sold them. I paid £55 for a full mdf shelf. It's strong as, has better mounts on it (so no snapped from the weight) and is very well made.

SAdly he left ebay.. Never saw him again either. Still the best shelf i've had/seen

Years ago I wanted more bass in my swing so I replaced the rear speakers that exist in the seatbelt mounts with good quality ones for clarity, then put and unamplified (just wired it to one of the rear speakers) subwoofer in the boot. It gave out tons of bass and the car ooked original. The rear window used to shake!

Also it meant the car still looked original.

Now that I am older.....I just put in decent 10cm speakers where the existing ones are and that is usually fine, age lol

Did you consider the acoustic carpet and the flush look for your speakers, and how important is aesthetics versus functionality when it comes to car audio modifications?
