Hi PNG Fellow Members, some of you will already have seen my Nova on here through random posts and at shows last year but I thought its time i finally do a project thread.

Pic Heavy.
I have had this car since i started to drive, previously owned a nova before that to play with when i was 15 also which got sold on.
Since owning this car ive had a further 4 novas, 2 gsi's, one was a nice blue but rotten and was scrapped, a pearl blue rj automotives one with turbo 1.6 conversion which some may have seen me in a few years ago and a black 1.2 gte lookalike which i also did a few shows in before selling on.
But there is something i love especially about the nova ive kept all these years.

After driving the car for a couple of years after passing my test i decided to go for a complete rebuild on the car and wanted something to mess about with on weekends so took the car off the road and stripped it back to a bare shell.
Over 8 years yes a long time i have finally got it back together and on the road now stored away in my garage.

It started life as a 1.2 spi FUN and i went through the dreaded bodykit phase.

And the now for the process of the strip down

So now i started to take the car apart piece by piece and using the Nova GSI i scrapped i used most of the components to build up my fun to a gsi design but i also wanted to go wider with the arches so i ended
up buying a wide arch kit from a company called SID. cant say ive seen anyone else with this wider kit as its not massive.
Anyway i went with it and this is how things progressed

Inner arches were cleaned up, i removed the undersealer from every part of the car and resealed the whole thing including the bottom of the car on axle stands with a wire wheel

engine now out i could make a start on tidying up the bay and repairing any rust areas, it was fairly good news as i did not have much to deal with
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/DSC00255_zpsae79bb1b.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/DSC00255_zpsae79bb1b.jpg.html)

I removed my gmax shocks and decided then to go with the AVO coilover kit to get the drop i was looking for
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/DSC00318_zps09b614ad.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/DSC00318_zps09b614ad.jpg.html)

More rust patched and repaired

They taped the arches on to see how they would look

After removing some of the rear arches to get an idea of how much to cut away i was greated by this underneath my side skirts so this had to be repaired first
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/DSC00078_zps4938992f.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/DSC00078_zps4938992f.jpg.html)

I then worked how much i could remove to get the low drop i was looking for without tyres rubbing and so on so trimmed and welded inner and outer arches for a water tight rear end
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/DSC00368_zpsf01ff4c5.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/DSC00368_zpsf01ff4c5.jpg.html)

I then top coated all the rear end and moved onto fitting the rear arches
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/DSC00181_zpsd9dc58b6.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/DSC00181_zpsd9dc58b6.jpg.html)

And then had an idea for a badboy bonnet which i bonded together but later decided against it but it went on for a couple of weeks
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/DSC00243_zps57ef14d3.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/DSC00243_zps57ef14d3.jpg.html)

I then continued to get on with the bodywork sorting out all the areas then needed repairs and fitting up the front wings ready to fit the wider arches
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/Photo0024_zpsf1f44fcf.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/Photo0024_zpsf1f44fcf.jpg.html)

I also decided to move the filler cap and fibreglass sheeted over the original filler point in the wider arches, welded up the vent in the drivers door area and cut a hole and sealed through the inner arches to meet my new fuel cap.
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/Photo0028_zps604cbeba.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/Photo0028_zps604cbeba.jpg.html)

After another trip out to newport i visited welsh coast customs and picked up this louvered bonnet
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/novafrontbefore_zps06ffd89c.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/novafrontbefore_zps06ffd89c.jpg.html)

After moving away from this bodykit look i also decided to get rid of my smooth boot for something semi smooth so went and got myself a mk1 boot and smoothed over the lock and wiper holes.
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/Photo0095_zpsded50214.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/Photo0095_zpsded50214.jpg.html)

At this point i needed to get finishing touches done and into paint so i took the car over to a place within an hour of hereford where they fitted my wider front arches and gave it a full respray in lamborghini white

Finally a couple of weeks later i get her home and start to do my refitting of parts, While it was away i took my old gsi components in to be powdercoated with the rear axle and front hubs etc ready to go on once it was all nice and clean

Loving those 'small' wide arches, would barely know the rears are not OE.

After abit of a break from the car at that point i think i left it stood for 6 months before doing any more work, i seemed to find myself about 10 other projects in between the rebuild and i also race model cars as a hobby which is a hobby that takes up most of my spare time.

But i did then make a start on the interior.
I had a roof lining made up and had the sun visors retrimmed in an old skool style pin dot material.
Similar to what was used in original mk1s but in black

I also had removed the leather interior from the nova turbo i had and fitted these into my car also after washing all the carpets and cleaning all the panels.
In went my gsi dash also and i painted up the heater controls in silver to match the seat trimming

Moving onto the engine i spent my time rebuilding the engine from the ground up, having the head skimmed, port and polishing, new gaskets all round and a repaint.
things were starting to come together and felt like their was light at the end of the tunnel.

So in went the engine and this was in 2011, after the engine went in i had some problems getting the engine to start so it was left for another 6 months with no real progress.
At that point i was then going out on the town alot and lost my drive to get the car finished.

Some pictures of the engine install

After a break i attended a couple of car shows in the seat ibiza cupra i was driving as a daily and got some inspiration to continue with my project.
I invested in some porsche d90s and some wheel adaptors and had them painted black and white which seemed like a good idea at the time but i got bored of that look fast also
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/untitled_zpsa82b2ee3.png (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/untitled_zpsa82b2ee3.png.html)

So putting the porsche wheels to one side i purchased some imscher softstars as they came up at a great price

Enjoying the new look i still had alot of work to do to get the car through and mot so spent a few nights trying to source the problem of why my engine wouldnt run.
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/IMG_2564_zpscc5dd53d.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/IMG_2564_zpscc5dd53d.jpg.html)

struggling by myself i had a friend come take a look for me who is generally very good with cars and projects and withing half an hour he sourced the problem.
I had stupidly tidyed up some of the engine wiring inside the injector leads cover and their was an earth cable lying loose inside, once this was connected the engine started first time.

I honestly dont believe i was that stupid but at least it was all running.

After all the work it was finally time for an mot,
With an mot test station opposite my parents house i drove across and waited for the good news, unfortunately they hit a couple of snags.
Major problem was that in the time it had been sat on the drive the radiator had sprung a leak and one of the sill failed due to it being corroded so onto the jobs to get it motd.

Cut out all the rot
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/IMG_2620_zps76caef4a.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/IMG_2620_zps76caef4a.jpg.html)

and repair both sides in the end with 2 new sill repair panels.
Unfortunately the company that did my respray had since closed down and no time for a blow over i had to do the repaint myself :( I will get round to getting the paint sorted at some point.

Also the car failed on the handbrake which i found one side not to be self adjusting so repaired and took it for a quick drive to bed in the new brakes and back in for mot.

All of this was a week before PV of this year.

Finally the car was on the road so decided to drive the car back to my own house ready for polishing.
On the way home i felt a horrible shaking and found that one of the wheel spacers id had made was off centre for the bolt holes causing a horrible wobble.
I thought their was no chance of me turning the job around but decided i should use the porsche wheels.

The day before PV i hated the black and white look to i repainted the wheels in a hurricane grey

I asked the flockers if they could do parcel shelfs so they gave it ago, came out ok i think

In the mean time have also bought myself a mk2 boot in mint condition from Walsall area so will be getting that painted and test to see if i prefer it with mk1 or mk2 boot?

More to follow soon

Yea went with the speaker grills also.

So since my last post i have been working on the car every night fixing a few items and working on another set of wheels.

I decided the wheels needed to be wider so went out and bought myself some porsche d90s in 7j and 8j wide.
After a heavy refurb done by myself and a change of tyres theyre now all complete and on the car.

Ive managed to get all the interior together also with my digi dash all up and running, and had some panels made up to fit my rear door cards to cover where my fuel pipe comes up through the arch to the cap inside the door shut. Had these made and trimmed by my friends at Waboo Automotive.

Ive also now decided to have my bumpers painted to match the new colour of my wheels as for me i felt their was too much white on the car so sent these off and in the mean time gave underside of the bumpers a good clean up.

Some pictures of my progress.

what wide arch kit is that and how much wider is it? it looks good not too wide and keeps the nova lines.

Yes wide arches front and rear, think the fronts are around 1.25" and rears are 1" wider hence having to get the 8j on the front and 7j wheels in the rear.
I wanted something that looked abit wider but not like the massive kits you see on ebay

I originally got the arches from a company called SID i think they only made 10 sets though and unfortunately have stopped making them as i was after another set for backup

Well since last June i decided to strip the car down and start again. This time im planning to change the car colour, but had a few jobs that had been bugging me.
The plan was to rebuild the car in time for my wedding which was 11th May so just gone. But i find myself in the same position if was back in January due to a lazy bodyshop.

Here are a few photos of my progress since June last year.

So i had a look at the sills around my car and found the rear corner leading upto the arches was starting to rot away. So firstly tackled this
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/IMG_7044_zps2f0n3tqx.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/IMG_7044_zps2f0n3tqx.jpg.html)
and also bumper the bumper on the corner
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/IMG_7054_zpsqnquccdg.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/IMG_7054_zpsqnquccdg.jpg.html)

I had a couple of small cracks showing from my wide arches so i cleaned right back to the arch and resealed and re skimmed the rear quarter
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/IMG_7058_zps7bqcoxw9.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/IMG_7058_zps7bqcoxw9.jpg.html)
This time round i have much more confidence in what i was doing so not worried about getting any issues in the future now

The car was also previously deafening to say the least, and as you get older i want abit more luxury, so i dynomat the whole inside of the car, inside all the panels, doors, boot and entire floor. This should make it nicer to drive

After a few shows looking around last year i decided to try and do abit of loom hiding, so made up some tubes at work from stainless and fed them from the scuttle to the headlights region, Just need to make the loom once the car is painted
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/IMG_7156%20-%20Copy_zpspl45ucgp.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/IMG_7156%20-%20Copy_zpspl45ucgp.jpg.html)

Along the way ive notched the chassis leg for alternator clearance as ive now decided to go with C20xe engine, Ive had one sat in a lock up for a few years so decided this was the right time.
I stitch welded entire engine back and inside inner wings,
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/IMG_7539_zps9ncfbdjd.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/IMG_7539_zps9ncfbdjd.jpg.html)
All nicely smoothed also, Ive plated up most of the chassis rail holes and done a few repairs around the turrets which needed attention.
I plated the electrical inlet also and re-positioned where the loom will enter the engine bay.
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/IMG_7540_zpsqyce7ek7.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/IMG_7540_zpsqyce7ek7.jpg.html)

I also had to replace the bottom section of both inner arches.
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/IMG_7484%20-%20Copy_zpscirn3yhs.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/IMG_7484%20-%20Copy_zpscirn3yhs.jpg.html)
So dont all this, treated areas and then re coated with tetra shutz.

To check for clearances i fitted the engine in and out about 6 times including mounting gearbox to ensure everything sat correct and bonnet would close.
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/IMG_7439%20-%20Copy_zpsi2amjbvj.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/IMG_7439%20-%20Copy_zpsi2amjbvj.jpg.html)

And finally for now the engine has been seeing most of my attention, as the body went off to bodyhsop end of january for paint.
Unfortunately the guy hasnt done a thing, so its back in my garage and moving onto a friends workshop for work and paint next month.

But here is what i was working on in the time the car has been away
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/IMG_7640_zpswuimsvlz.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/IMG_7640_zpswuimsvlz.jpg.html)
I have alot of other parts ready but will photograph as i re assemble as most is currently wrapped up hidden away until the head is fitted with new followers and seals.

Thanks All, and Benn from the way it sits it seems to clear no problem, when i did my checks.
Thats why i test fitted with a full engine and gearbox properly installed.

Ive now just adjusted to the new alternator mount from the later engines and a 120a alternator with the old style belt wheel fitted and seems to give more clearance than before so all good

Hopefully these guys will actually do something too it.
Ive been promised it back by end of June so heres hoping.

While ive been cleaning out the garage i found 1 of the old red tinted lights i did for my Vauxhall magazine shoot which had faded alot, so tried a bunch of products to remove the tint with no luck.
So finally decided i would flat it back and lacquer it to bring it back clear. Hopefully this will look better with my new colour scheme.
Just need to find the other one somewhere

Is it the grey that seems to be on a few newer cars? It's a very marmite colour but I've seen it on things like Audi RS3 and it looks good.

In all seriousness I love this colour and it really suits a Nova. Contrasts well with black and a splash of colour.

Its a Ford St 200 Grey called Storm Grey, Been a fan of the colour ever since i saw the st200 come out. Just took me a long time to get the guts to go for it.
Iain well done your the first of many i expect to say that lol.

Yea i have some coloured parts for the engine and few little touches to paint. But will mainly be black and grey.

Got the inner arches painted up last night and removed the old avo coilovers.
Tonight plan is to get front arms removed and possibly steering rack so that can be repainted and refitted but i start on the tucked loom

Nutty Nova

Now the car is up in the air on blocks ive started to get the inner arches cleaned up after paint.
Before the car went off i cleaned and repaired any rotted areas and tetra shutz all under the panels.
Now i have painted them with top coat and they have come out brilliant.

Ive also refitted my fuel cap and started to create my new loom for the headlights and various other components before i start tackling the brake servo and steering rack

I Hope not nick, My aim is to attend Trax or Ultimate Stance in November. Failing that i will beaver away throughout the winter and concentrate on every nut and bolt. But over time everything will have a refresh.

I think the only part i haven't removed this time round is the rear axle and handbrake setup.

I also have another set of clear rears and some smoked rear lenses to try on the car, Then i can retint my 2nd set of clears for a full red set

Aiming for a spot at ultimate stance in 2weeks time

As i didnt finish wiring in the engine until friday night before putting it on the trailer saturday morning.
I decided to push it into the show rather than drive it in, as the smoke from the fresh paint and wrapped exhaust would have put the ultimate stance teams off letting me inside lol

But its now all up and running properly.

Next plans are to sort out extending the thermostat cable to tuck it out of sight and work on building a new install for the boot.

I also have some varied light options to clean up and lacquer to use for different shows so its not always looking the same.

Cant wait for next year now.
Just need to buy myself my own trailer now

Since the shoot i was not 100% with my boot install, I placed 3rd in the show n shine also at Spring action day at castle coombe.
So with a defeat i started to work on a new install, i had some spare rear cards that ive cut the parcel shelf supports off and smoothed.
Since the pics i also welded up the access to the lights so the panels are fully smooth
https://oi221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/A7CF6EAE-85FD-445D-90F6-E37AB77F78BE_zpsxr1s1dbe.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/A7CF6EAE-85FD-445D-90F6-E37AB77F78BE_zpsxr1s1dbe.jpg.html)
https://oi221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/D0100324-3291-4A31-B170-63EF0A184AA5_zpsqbf6syfn.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/D0100324-3291-4A31-B170-63EF0A184AA5_zpsqbf6syfn.jpg.html)
I also smoothed in the buttons on the front trims by the windscreen
https://oi221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/3AE02B66-78F3-4E13-B327-4C4B81AD9EA8_zpsddxrhbbr.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/3AE02B66-78F3-4E13-B327-4C4B81AD9EA8_zpsddxrhbbr.jpg.html)

After the rear cards were fully smoothed i painted them black but was not happy with the overall look, so took them to my local trimmers to work his magic and now im happy
https://oi221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/C2005DE9-0C98-4832-A8D8-455FA50110C4_zpsfchwnns4.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/C2005DE9-0C98-4832-A8D8-455FA50110C4_zpsfchwnns4.jpg.html)

I also got him to do the lower trim across the boot panel

https://oi221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/D50B0016-16D2-4B27-8693-F28176B702E6_zpscng0cwto.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/D50B0016-16D2-4B27-8693-F28176B702E6_zpscng0cwto.jpg.html)

With a nice clean trim i also felt the boot needed nice rivnuts to hold the panel trim on with clean allen head bolts

With all these new panels i was working on the boot install, so i ripped everything out and have so far come up with the following.

https://oi221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/D64050E7-B275-43E7-9B39-A3051ABF8958_zps97nk0wfb.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/D64050E7-B275-43E7-9B39-A3051ABF8958_zps97nk0wfb.jpg.html)
Both Arches also had to be repainted as i decided to have these on show rather than covered up
https://oi221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/EC80D00C-E5C7-4481-A194-05241362AB80_zps3mvksdrq.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/EC80D00C-E5C7-4481-A194-05241362AB80_zps3mvksdrq.jpg.html)
https://oi221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/8288277D-E10B-49FB-A842-7DC07808C9A3_zps5z3sgi6z.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/8288277D-E10B-49FB-A842-7DC07808C9A3_zps5z3sgi6z.jpg.html)

I also then trimmed the panel i made for the boot in alacantara to match the seats, so far i think it has come out well

https://oi221.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/Pownabown/Nova%20Fun%20Project/18576A2E-2B69-431D-A907-EF91DE8976AA_zpsuvc81qak.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/Pownabown/media/Nova%20Fun%20Project/18576A2E-2B69-431D-A907-EF91DE8976AA_zpsuvc81qak.jpg.html)

All i have left now is to finish welding the strut brace i have been making, that will also mount the air tank, and then to fabricate some new hard lines into the boot floor panel.

Oh not forgetting i took the car over to Ultimate Auto Eu for a full scale flat and polish to bring the paint to a flatter shine

Well its been a busy week last week preparing for modified nationals,
I made a rear brace at work on thursday to mount my air tank off and then repainted the air tank also thursday while at work sneaking off.

Got them mounted thursday night and made the hard lines for the air ride, as finished installing the new side panels i have made and had trimmed.

It took me a long time also to smooth and sand down the rear arches and get them looking like glass so I have some colour in the boot.
A couple of pics from Modified Nationals also.
Where i managed to get runner up award in best engine bay category

@stevep1

I fixed it with "Photobucket hotlink fix" add-on to Chrome

After installation I had to clear my cache in order for it to work properly but works as a charm.

The add-on is also available for Opera and Mozilla
