View Full Version : Hydraulic Clutches (Nova)

I would be keen to hear from people who use a hydraulic clutch on their Nova to see how they've gone about it.
When I got my hillclimb Nova it had a hydraulic clutch, which was simply a Mini slave cylinder operating a cut-down clutch actuating arm (standard Nova part). It worked perfectly well, but..............
In what I thought would be a clever move to save weight, I was going to go over to using a concentric slave cylinder (i.e. the type used on later Vauxhalls that sits inside the bellhousing). I got all the parts (including a brand new slave), but since then the car has laid unfinished.
Various people did warn me not to go that route, and having had the same slave cylinder fail on my V6 Vectra road car last week, I can see why. The internal cylinders seem to be an unreliable part, and of course any maintenance or replacement is a gearbox out job.
So, I think it's back to hydraulic clutch actuation OUTSIDE of the bellhousing.
Let me know what you have/suggest please......
I'd stick with the lever option you did the first time... What good is less weight if its unreliable lol

I have a genuine GM slave cylinder inside an F16 operated by a floor mounted pedal. It's only had a little use, but seems fine and was a more or less direct fit.

whats wrong with the standard cable clutch. Its surely the lightest solution or does the clutch get heavy when running uprated pressure plates?

Peugeots use an external slave cylinder and they are plastic so very light weight

Cable clutch's don't lend themselves well to aftermarket pedal setups, and yes a clutch is naturally heavier when coupled with a tougher pressure plate.

I guess the AP ones are much better quality, but they'll be expensive no doubt.
Thanks Rich, I will have a look at the Peugeot option, which models and age should I be looking at?

The only reason why some have deemed them unreliable is because they are bursting the internals of the slave.

And thats one very good reason.

I cant see the issue with a correctly fitted genuine part. Agreed some of the £30 specials are questionable with regards to quality, but originals are doing tens of thousands of miles in road cars.
As long as its not over stroked (simple pedal stop) it should last.
or make a spacer for it to not need a pedal stop.
Even Genuine ones can be iffy in the F23

F23 concentric here, never missed a beat - was in my 2001 Astra turbo before the Nova... still no problems

look at some of the old hyundais in the scrappys with the Vaux 8v motors in, they have a Vaux gearbox too and run a external slave cylinder

Thanks very much for that, I wasn't aware of that.
Do we know what model and year of Hyundais to look at please?

I did a fair bit of Google research and I can't find any info on Hyundai using a Vauxhall engine?
Anyone else know anything about this?

That was what I thought? Did any of the Daewoos use a smallblock engine?

Genius, thank-you.
Looks like it will be worth me buying a complete Daewoo gearbox from a smallblock engine to rob the clutch cylinder and the clutch release arm from.

Seems like more weight the external solution?
If you do go internal just have someone under the clutch watching as you slowly depress the pedal; letting you know when it's engaged so you know where to set the pedal stop.

Found a Daewoo Lanos in our local scrappy with the 8v small block in it and a hydraulic clutch. Looks like an easy retrofit with a different clutch lever, slave and bracket. Took a pic of tje car and reg to help identification if you are buying new...

Brilliant, big thanks for that Rich.
I think the easiest thing will to buy a complete gearbox from a scrappy with all the bits attached.
If you fancy a job removing it for me, don't hesitate to let me know!

The gearbox casing etc looked identical to an F13/F15 so should be a straight swap.
Car was on the deck and it was muddy/oily as hell in the scrappy. Not a nice job. Prob easier to find somebody breaking on on ebay but if it were me I would fit a new slave anyway.
At least they are easy to swap if one failed, got tons of room around it.
