View Full Version : Trackday / Race meeting Thread.

Ok, so seeing a few track / Race orientated threads possibly falling into obscurity just recently (@Hobbit - Llandow, @Iain - Oulton & @Alex J - Snet), so thought it might be an idea to keep them all in one place.

Pretty sure there's also some oval racers here, @Andy - @Pottersrebel - @Jeremy fisher and of course the Hillclimb / Sprint Colin Smith @Novarally

Definitely not the right time of year to start such a thread, but I myself do a few trackdays and have some booked with a view to going racing sometime soon, so it would be good to keep the pictures, Video's and future bookings / entry's all in one place.

Everyone loves to see a Vaux used in anger and its all too easy to miss being part of the action when you don't know where to look.

Me : Castle Combe 5th Dec
Me : Watching the action at Brands on 22nd Nov (Trackday trophy)
Me : Bedford 28th Feb

Cool, Would love to see a bit of onboard in light contact racing. I use a GoPro 3 mounted on the cage. Its just an exhaust clamp with a bit of folded steel but does the job. The thing is it seems to be frowned upon by the course officials, but i dont get that as all i use mine for is studying technique which it proves invaluable for when on wide.

Video below of the last time i went out at Combe. Not my quickest lap, and with a bit of traffic but the quickest i have on film.

Jeremy Fisher, I must have you mistaken for someone else. I sold a 4.27cwp to someone destined for a stock rod who I thought was you.

And Toymex, shame on me forgetting about your little screamer in the QMN.

Out of interest and if you don't mind posting Pottersrebel, what does that Corsa weigh?

It's looking like we have the start of a track day at brands. If you get 5 cars you get 10% off and a garage. If you can get 10 car you also get a group photo on the starting grid at lunch. What are the chances of getting 10 novas though haha

Went to a track day at Brands that my neighbour organised in October with the mostly Astra VXR and Corsa drivers, he runs WGMotorworks, and turn out was pretty good. Got it for £150 for the day with the group discount. I'll ask if he's going to do another one early next year and we could join in with them.

Looks like it will be a good meeting Andy, just way too far for the likes of me is Blyton.

Went to Brands yesterday to watch and support James Birch in the last race of the MSV Trackday Trophy. Absolutely cracking day and some great close racing. He managed a win in his class and 3rd overall which was his first podium finish. Very well done.

As much as I would like to commit to a Nova trackday at Brands mine is a little poorly at the moment so I'm using the Astra. Would still come along of course though and if it was soonish would tie it in with my ARDS test.

Glad this thread has gathered some momentum, despite being a terrible time of year to start it. I'm out again next Friday at Combe and cant wait. Fitted a new seat to the car I'm taking and figure its got to be worth a second or 2 as it holds me so much tighter.

A great day at Castle Combe. Wet in the morning, dried out slowly but never properly as it was so cold. A few moments, but came home in one piece and managed a 1:18 timed on the GoPro, with a little room for improvement.

Had to knock, the quality down as I only had an 8GB card, but enjoy.

Craig - is that the ex-hillclimb Astra with Colin Satchell-designed front suspension?

8valve-craig
26-01-15, 10:51 PM
I couldn't say Colin. It has been used for Hillclimb and Sprint in the South West for the last 13 years though. I bought it off Stuart Lillington and his father Phillip who used to share the drive.

Front suspension is Mcpherson strut with simple spring / Insert setup. The Geometry is modified to within 20mm adding castor and adjustment, but it's nothing special so I would imagine the guys did it themselves.

Have a feeling I may know the car you mean though. If so a Chap called Bob now owns it in Bristol as it came up for sale a year or 2 back, Its almost the twin of this one.

It does corner OK, I was slightly quicker over a lap. It took me a while to reel him in, then did manage to pass him on the back straight, but had to try very very hard to stay ahead and eventually ran out of talent quite spectacularly. I was out with him in the Nova earlier in the day and his is by far the better handling car. It really is impressive.

Yes it was supposed to be on the cards this year. Really must get on and do my ARDS as it looks like a lot of fun. I couldnt do a whole championship, but would look at the CSCC / QMN tintops and MSV trackday trophy. From what i have watched i think that yes it could be competetive.

I was at Combe yesterday for the Howards Day meeting. It was a brilliant day. Not sure who else went but if they have skin like mine they will have came home burned to a crisp.

One thing to note, saw a white K-reg GSi in the car park. Totally standard and original with the mandatory rusty arches etc. Anyones off here? i planned to leave a card on the screen with a purchase offer but ended up staying to the end and it had gone.

Yes, 100% correct, no slop or movement, so its easy to be too precise sometimes

Astra does a 1:17 on Dunlop 03g Semi's, but I think I could get a bit off that. Not tried the Nankang's.

What did you think of the new surface?

Hobbit
02-05-15, 01:05 PM
I'm not a huge fan. The top of avon rise seems less violent so the car doesn't go as light. Didn't thinknthere was as much grip out there too.

1:17 is impressive.

I did Mallory at a couple of the PPC in the park events so only short sessions but thought it was pretty good. Bit short of run off in areas which can be a bit unnerving and Gerrards is hard on the car, you need good sump baffles!
I think it's cheap because they are struggling and the noise limit is very low due to whining neighbours.

Went to Castle Combe again on Friday with the Astra and some mates in their Clio's. Had a brilliant day, with just a few hic-ups. A little off which damaged the O/S, caused by a split front oil seal which wet the tyres. Managed to find another seal in a motor factors locally, so whipped the bottom pulley off and did it before lunch. Then must not have leaned on the tensioner bolt enough, as it loosened and let the timing slip. Very Very lucky with that one though, so threadlocked and re-timed it, then back out.

Last session of the day we wish we filmed, as the Marshall's seemed to have no issues atall with a full on race between me and a friend on an otherwise empty track.

Astra is for sale now if anyone is interested, as I did my ARDS last month and will be racing a different car.

I love that Astra Craig!!!

First time posting here, copied from my project thread, hope that's ok with everyone.

So Monday at Cadwell,

Anyone following Iain's build thread has seen my shonky old Nova next to Iain's.

As I don't have a trailer yet I hired a flat bed with ramps to get up to Cadwell 360 mile round trip.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c175/grahampointing/410FF9C2-FE83-4D8B-9C3A-8BFD9F3D3EB7.jpg (http://s27.photobucket.com/user/grahampointing/media/410FF9C2-FE83-4D8B-9C3A-8BFD9F3D3EB7.jpg.html)

Seconds after this photo was taken, Dog spotted a cat the other side of the truck and the chase was on!!!!

Made it to Cadwell, we couldn't get in until 8pm cos of the British superbike meeting which sucked balls, we got the "Team Shonky Vauxhall" gazebo up and Iain fired up the most pathetic disposable BBQ's I've ever seen, after a lot of BBQ starter (Harvey's brake fluid) we managed to eat and consume a few ciders. We were discussing the weather and hoping for a dry day, we decided, it didn't have to be sunny, just dry.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c175/grahampointing/6486A3AC-7FB7-4706-AB35-F0A62E10FC4B.jpg (http://s27.photobucket.com/user/grahampointing/media/6486A3AC-7FB7-4706-AB35-F0A62E10FC4B.jpg.html)

We got a decent space in the tiny paddock, there are no garages at Cadwell so we threw the gazebo up for a bit of protection from the rain, as it turned out it wasn't rain shade we needed but sun shade!! roasting hot!!!

This was my first outing on the 888's so I took it really steady while setting up tyre pressure, after a bit of jiggery pokery we got to 28 hot on the front and 24 hot on the back, this worked really well and the car felt stable and planted at all times.

Anyone that's not been to Cadwell needs to go, it's an amazing track, a real nice mix of straights and corners, a great track for testing all round capabilities.

Highlights of the day include,

Passenger ride in Iain's car, where I ended up being the bad luck charm and my added weight on the passenger side destroyed the inner CV (see Iain's thread for an explanation)

The guy in the Nissan 370Z coming up to Iain in the pits and admitting he was disgusted at himself for having to let a Nova through as he had a "3.7 litre engine and couldn't get away from an old Nova"

Another guy in an MX5 telling me my car was unbelievable fast in a straight line and good round the bends I just needed to "hook up a lap" which Iain took delight in interpreting that I'm a scheise driver and my car needs to be driven by someone who can drive (him)

Anyway enough talk a little video of my last session, my brake fluid was completely shot by this point so I was lifting and coating a little to try and take it steady, also camera postion has been altered for the next event.

https://youtu.be/FpaRY5UwlDk

For some reason I can't inbed videos?!?!

So last round at Harewood yesterday, everything was back on song and felt stronger than it ever has done, this proved true when doing a new PB on my 2nd practise run. After lunch and the first timed run gave me another new PB with a 70.57 which was enough to win the class. Really happy with the car at the minute, a few improvements over winter and should easily see it being a sub 70 second car at Harewood.

Good, cos I didn't stand a chance, I need to revise my spring rates and damping to get mine handling similar to yours.

Spring rates are pretty much the same, tyres make a difference (albeit less so due to slicks) and so does the diff. I think a trackday at somewhere like Blyton with time spent testing and tweaking would allow you to do what you want although might need to look at the rear dampers themselves. Remember also that my car was setup for my style of driving thats a little less aggressive than yours Id say.

I was very impressed with your speed / committment through Port Froid.
