Anything Japanese. Or a Focus/Mondeo.

Can't believe you included Vectra's under good cars.

From that list there's only two I'd have.
Keep it cheep, so 1400 for tax class after September 01, so that narrows it to the Corsa c really..

Or go older and grab a mk3 Astra 1400.

Mk4 golf gt tdi . Good on fuel and cheap tax. It will also drive better than any Vauxhall.

I don't think you'll get one worth buying at £1200..
It will just be a heap of crap full of issues.

MK4 astras are piss cheap these days because the VED is a bit irritating. Great car though.

You should get a Clio 172 for the budget too, itll be a rat but hey its like an XE nova should be lol

Don't often see cav TDs for sale any more, those that do come up tend to be a bit rotten. Not sure I'd want the hassle of one as a daily again too; even if it was mint to start with it would soon crumble away the minute it saw a bit of winter use.

For jap stuff on that budget you'd be looking at 6th gen Celica GT, Avensis, Corolla, Starlet, Galant GL, various small Suzukis, Primera, Mazda 6, RX8 if you fancy it lol

Other than that, I'd probably look at Mondeos or Astras.

Are you wanting a car just for driving about for the sake of it and saving money or are you wanting a car to show off to your mates in?

Focus or Astra of some kind for basicness.

106 gti or saxo vts imo! I'm currently flying around in a gti as my daily mule and gotta say it really is a fun little car. Been extremely reliable and very fun in corners. They ain't fast by any means but are quick enough to get over takes done on b roads without brown'ing your trousers. Mine has a 4-2-1 mani, decat and a pug sport cat back exhaust. Sounds pretty nice tbh plus its raspy as hell and pops and bangs like no tomorrow on the over run lol makes me feel like a teen again ha.

The saxo vts and 106 gti are identical cars apart from body and interior styling so if you like them keep an eye out for both, imo you cant have reliable daily fun for less. I had a 172 cup before this i used to run about in and i actually prefer the gti even if it is a little slower.

i paid £1400 (minus coilovers, bumper and few other bits) for this. 530d. you can pick up cheaper SE spec ones. 240k and still pulls like a train.

one day maybe :)

novadave24
15-11-14, 05:08 PM
if I was you I would go for the coupe looks much better and you get a lot of boot space ant sure on a compact boot tho

jimbob-mcgrew
15-11-14, 05:45 PM
the main reason was cos its a hatchback, over all the regular saloons, with a big open rear frame for loading if needed, plus its a bit shorter, which i prefer.

i saw an old tv review, that said the compacts bootfloor is lower down, due to the rear suspension setup from the older e30, altho the saloon is a fair chunk longer at the back end, so what space it looses in depth, it will gain in length.

its a shame they only go upto 1.9 straight 4 tho, thats the one pretty big downside.
a 2.5 would be much more fun to drive. i know they can be converted to the later gen vanos engine, but thats requires doing things, and spending twice as much.

Good, cheap, everyday car, RX8 lol lol

They are good until you switch it off and it wont start again and then needs a rebuild at 30k miles. lol

Look nice parked up being fixed though :)

My brother had a mk4 golf tdi. Crap, destroyed its gearbox, ate its turbo etc. Very overrated cars imo.

Cant go wrong with a mk4 astra on a budget. Probably even picked up a SE2 coupe for a grand
