Hi everyone,

So I've picked up my 'back to my youth' project.
its running a c14se engine with...(according to build spec)
big valve head
twin 40 webber carbs
rally b spec head, ported, polished, hydraulic lifters (head skimmed)
kent camshaft and pulley
arp rod bolts
blue printed engine
mbe 967id management with 3d ignition
421 manifold

however, it seems to be running very very rich...is this an easy fix by 'retuning' the carbs?

thanks, Sam

Twin 40s drink fuel, take them to be setup if you want as they don't stay balanced for long

Drink fuel as in how many miles to a tank? And leave a strong smell of fuel?
i take it just the labour cost is involved with these?

easy job if they know what they're doing, but yeah they will stink of fuel and should get about 20mpg

Ha ha so my impreza is better on fuel!
love it!
thanks for the advice I'll get it booked in!

yeah that's the trade off for the sound of automotive orgasm haha. as i said should only need balancing if they where setup to the car is it is

Getting the jetting right is crucial and it's more than just the one jet end times four; it's things like emulsion tubes too.

you will need to take it to a decent rolling road, one that knows how to tune carbs!

Think I've found one!!!

Okie whom might that be?

Mowatts or redline. Both Basildon/wickford way in Essex.

When you've got it rolling roaded I'm sure you'll have a better idea of the problem your having, carbs nowadays are a niche market so not easy to find for tuning, it's all ECU diagnostics and remapping these days.

Hmm, I wonder why? Lol

Yeah, these are old skool places!
know all about remapping as my scoob has has been done twice now :)

You can have them run on a mapped ECU with air temp & TPS to alter the timing; so don't think it's a ticket to 1932 AD ~ Even the astra distributor route is electronic. People still get proper figures & reliability from carbs.

Get to HT racing by Brands hatch Arron is second to none with carbs and is very good @ mapping too ,he did my race car and it has been faultless ,mine is on 45,s and MBE ecu with TPS

You can check and balance them yourself you just need a carb synchrometer a mate of mine balances his itb's every 1k just to be sure they are working at optimum performance.

^^^Rob, I wouldn't have a clue how to do that...in a safe way! I have no idea what they should be set at or anything!
toymex, I take my scoob to a place near brands so this could be an option. Do you know basic pricing?
thanks, Sam

Best bet is to ring HT racing with your spec and what you're wanting them to do to get a price imo,

Assuming proper spark; carbs can be synchronised on the screw that opens the butterfly valves. If they're flowing different rates of air then just back the screw off; if that then causes the engine to idle too low then lean off the idle screws.

It's really that simple; that meter just tells you the flow when you stick it in the trumpet. I made a cheeky 90° elbow on mine from a bit of pvc plumbing pipe, bonded on so you can read the meter from the front of the car; did it this afternoon in just a few minutes. Mine do 7.5 for all you nerds out there.

Forgot to mention; put some threadlock on said butterfly valve screw, let it go off for about 30mins, then wind the screw in about 5 turns then back out 5 turns.

This way there's bits of threadlock floating about in the thread to prevent the screw vibrating out of set position, but not set so solid the screw wont move.

Sam I can't remember what he charged but he is competitively priced ,he is top notch ,lots of old ford boys use him and lots of racers ,he knows his stuff and is well worth a visit ,he can be hard to talk to but worth the effort ,just make sure it's Arron you speak to
