While i was away during the summer the P.c got riddled with virus's to the stage that it was unuseable.
Last week the computer guy where my mother works wiped it clean and started again with windows xp etc.
Fair enough we now have XP but the computer is so slow its rediculous!
Its a turn off to log on.
Basically its got pentium 3, 128ram, 2gig harddrive, 56k modem.
The modem as i check it now is runing at 26.4kbps! (i presume it should be near 56k??)
Even offline when i click on an icon it takes an eternity to come up where as a year ago when the p.c was new it would be up as you release the mouse!!
Any ideas anyone? :?

yep you need more ram and a bigger hard drive.
if its only 2Gb then i doubt uv got much left which means ur swop file will be far too small.

also id recomend a min of 256MB ram with XP

personaly with that spec id stick to win2k pro or even win98 if you can get the drivers.

slow modem speed is probly cuz its not using the correct driver!!

I see.....and would going back to windows 98 rectify the problem now?
Is a swop file literally what it sounds like, ie full now from swapping over from win98 to XP?
Sorry but this kinda thing is a little beyond me!!!
Also on the driver thing i thought about that but how would that have been changed during this or how do i check it?
Thanks

a swop file is used to store information currently in use by windows. like a tempory memory space.
not much you can do about the driver apart from try to get aother more suitable. and yes going back to 98 would speed things up!

It's basically underpowered to run WinXP, more Ram, HDD space and faster CPU needed really, as for the modem you'll never get 56k from a 56k modem so that's nothing unusual (I get DL speeds of 65kb/s from my 600k Broadband if I'm lucky).
My advice would be to ask the guy that installed Xp to uninstall it and put Win '98 on.

most 56k modems connect at 48k or 49k!!

Yeah but you'll never get that sort of DL speed out of it.

download and upload speed is a different thing alltogether, it is still connected via your isp with a 48k connection for example, downloads for a typical 56kb dial up connection wont reach much above 5kb/s

think win98 might be best option alright.
But that same guy could also upgrade bits very cheap if i asked!
Thanks everyone, at least i know now.
