View Full Version : Anyone on these forums from the South of Scotland?
Hi guys, going to be purchasing my first Vauxhall Nova in the near future and I am looking for some local lads who could possibly support the build and help out with some useful advice? I am actually studying an NC in Welding and Fabrication so the cutting and molding side to it suits me, its more the mechanical side.
Cheers in advance :)
Jamie :)
hi, welcome to png. you have come to the right place & if you are learning to weld, then you are already on the right path.
we have a heap of knowledge on here, and if it isn't in the articles, just ask us.
what sort of plans do you have?
if you become a member, there is a scotland specific section
One of my friends might be selling me his J Reg 1.2 Registered Nova, clean shell with all these extras either on the car or boxed up - 1.6 8 valve with 1.3 head ported by john Mckean, dellorto twin 40 carburettors with genuine irmscher inlet manifold, piper bp300 rally camshaft, piper hydraulic tappets, piper followers, kent cam pulley, full sportex exhaust system with 4 branch manifold.
Always wanted a Nova but I am now turning 19 with a years NCB so the time feels right to save my pennies and finally get one. Got any advice on what I should look for etc? Thanks
Jamie
A XE boosted engine would be swell but my insurance would be out of bounds so I want to keep the car for doing this down the line but realistically a 1.6 is fast enough for the time being. Some of my friends know there engines inside out and are also trained welders or mechanics so doing the car should be a great challenge for us but it would be great if someone near Dumfries had a nova and knew what to look for or any tips and advice.
Welcome along ! There is a few scottish members down your way :-)
Cant wait to get started! Is there any for sale currently?
1.6 but 1.2 on the logbook.... yay fraud ahoy
Got any advice on what I should look for etc? Thanks
Jamie
An honest insurance policy....
haha, no I would get it declared straight away if i did purchase the motor. Got the money to buy it but i want enough so I can really get to work on it rather than having it just sitting feeling sorry for itself
Any advice for what I should look out for when going to view?
rust between the front and rear bumper
great. I know the rear arches can get pretty well rusted like and under the pedals is a no go on some of these
seriously follow andy's advice... a nova rusts like a fish swims...its what they were made to
As long as the rust ain't structural or to wide spread and/or the car ain't bent you should be ok. I wouldn't worry to much about the engine(providing it aint absolutely shagged) as it won't take long for you to realise a let or xe is essential lol.
Aye will have a right look at the motor in a few days time to see what full shape its in. Insurance wise a let or xe engine is a no go at the moment
Good on you to be honest mate I know alot of people that drive around in highly illegal cars down as 1.0L which are pushing huge figures etc etc. I personally always declare my mods but then again im old so doesn't make a hugr amount of difference to my insurance.
I would rather pay extra and not run any risks. Just pricing up insurance and the cost of the car etc before i get my wallet out. Cant wait though wanted one for years now, just a shame none of my friends are so keen
They are just jealous mate! Out of all my cars only my FD gets more attention than my nova and that's mostly because it's insanely loud and aggressive sounding lol. The general public love nova's from my experience alot of people find them to be very nostalgic! Proper retro classics :)
I am hoping to have it bought by March so looking through the market just now
Awrite Jamie what's the crack, am fae stranraer lol would that be south west enough, there a guid bunch of guys on here with loads o experience and help to offer aswell :-)
Im in Dumfries my man, close enough like. Got any pics of your gem?
http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?205954-my-wee-mk1-sr that's her there bud Dumfries ain't that faraway
nice wee motor there my man, whats the under side like? how long you had it for? No not at all pal
It's needing a wee bit of tlc to sort her out but nowt major,I've had her since March but only got her home a few weeks ago as I had other things going on pal
aye suppose nearly every shell will need work. Doesnt look too bad though and could be tidy with a conversion, move up from a 1.6? I am looking to get one around March? Got my eye on a few but will keep a look out until I have the funds like
That's it bud it's all about getting a clean one, she's got a few wee marks on her but she's 26yr old kinda tempted to either XE it or LET it but no 100% sure yet
aye. Either would be a good call, its getting the time to get it all done like
Aye boss I'd agree with you on the finding time to get it done especially coming into the winter and not having a garage lol
aye just a nightmare like, lets hope there are plenty of dry days haha
Any Luck finding a nova??
You will probably find members from Scotland in time.... There are lots of nice nova's in Scotland but we never see them lol would be great if one day we could turn a big meet!
Cheers!

Hi Jamie-I am based in Dumfries and have a little history with Novas(although nearly 20yrs ago) so if you need any help get in touch.
In 1992 I purchased a Nova Sport (C351 PSW) and ran it for 2 years-sadly written off soon after.
It had a John McKean gasflowed big valve head and KN panel filter, then rolling roaded at Atkinson Motorsport Kendal.
Finished off with a set of Carmona alloys (Minilite style) painted white.
Second Nova in 1995 was home-built with Astra 1800 engine topped with twin Dellortos. This was before internet how-to-guides.
Driveshafts from Martin Tinker(Rallycross) and everything else I had to learn as I went along.
Also had a 1.3SR and a 1.4SR in the 90s.
