Anyone ever had this problem before, belt hitting in the bracket, like the alternator is too low in the bracket http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/09/5787d9e2d16a3f95eef8a3bc0707af4d.jpg

is this the new higher amp alternator ?

cant fully tell from the pic, but it looks like the v-belt is too long, causing the alternator to tilt too far back, and foul the belt.

This is the dead 55a alternator form a 1.2 but this is the only belt that fits, 925mm

is it fouling on the backside of the mount, where the bolt goes through ? (washers on the 2 bracket bolts might help)

or is it fouling on the side of the bracket arm ? (washers behind the pulley wheel might help)

or fouling on both ? (washers on both, lol)

maybe thats why your having charging problems too, if the belts snagging/slipping. wont be spinning the alternator properly

Fouling right where the bolt goes through at the bottom the belt is a over bracket, bush and bolt. The amount of washer it'd take on the pulley there would be no thread left lol , it was already dieing on my 1.2 so is only being used to test fit

im sure theres a less cowboy way of doing it, but ive seen some people use longer bolts with 10-15 washers on each bolt.
seems a little crazy, but apparently, a quick fix that does the trick for clearance issues.

Need a standard bracket then lol

Need a standard bracket then lol

which bracket is that one by the way ?

looks like it might be a later one, that probably gains extra clearance from a taller alternator, as well as a smaller pk pulley

It's a lowering bracket from deltoro

ah, a dellorto one.
i forgot you were running twin carbs.

That's the one

The bracket looks correct but the drive belt is too long causing the alternator to have to lean too far back to get tension.
The Sport runs a 9.5x850mm belt so try one closer to that size and it may help.
Also does the alternator have offset mounts, ie not level & opposite at 12 & 6 o'clock?(Some are offset like at 1 & 6 o'clock) If so, have you mounted it the right way up?

The 850mm belt I bought was nowhere near long enough, 925 only just fits. The alternator must be wrong

What alternators do sports run? Opposites or offset

Just a standard 1.3 alternator, I would have to check

I had this issue on my set up when i assembled it, just had to go to the motor factors and get a slightly shorter belt

Tried to got some pics of mine. Alternator mounts are straight opposite.

Cheers guys, gonna get in it first thing tomorrow

The lowering bracket is the virtually the same as a Sport one so don't know why it would sit differently.

When you use the shorter belt, what does the alternator hit, the carbs? If so, what manifold are you using?

It hits the waterpump housing

It's as if the alternator is too short it the crank pulley is too big and it's pushing the belt into the bracket, are e16se and sport bottom pulleys the same size? And are they interchangeable? Could be it

Novasport

What engine block are you using?

Novasport

If is an E16SE block the casting for the water pump housing may be larger. Also the block may be taller which would alter the angle of the belt.

Yeah all e16se apart for the head witch is c16se

My bottom pulley is 6" a smaller one would allow the belt to sit higher and clear the bracket

It was years ago but I believe when I had my 40s on my 1300 I had to make a longer top bracket to drop the alternator lower which made the belt run around the lower mount rather than above it. If that makes sense? As I'm pretty sure I used a 965 v belt.

Edit: just had a look at my old photos I used an 865 v belt not 965 and my drop bracket looks to drop the alternator lower than your one does allowing the alternator to not hit the inlet manifold.

What is the clearance like under the carbs if you refitted the alternator with the original bracket?

millworm
11-10-14, 04:59 PM
I don't have the original one

Novasport

Can you put a block or spacer between the engine block and the lowering bracket. It may push it back far enough to allow the alternator to tilt back forward enough for the belt to be at a better angle and clear the bracket

It'll try tomorrow and report back
