Just a random thread really lol

What in this day and age would buy if you had £5000, just curious what people think and why?

Pictures are always good for any thread ;)

Same here, well use it towards a deposit anyway.
I couldn't justify having a fart around car anymore, the last couple iv just not used.
Did about 1000miles in my xe before blowing it up,then about another 1000 on the seh before that went bang aswell.
Did 400 in the 205 gti which I had last.
At least racing my nova, it serves a purpose for me rather than driving around aimlessly trying to be 17 again lol

I did about 1500 miles in my restored TD and just over a 1000 in the V6 Loon, I completely agree with you. When I have projects I look at them as a bit of fun but I am careful with the money I spend as I always look as vehicles as a resellable asset, no point spending 5k on a Nova to run it for the summer and then sell it for half what it owes me!

Bloody hell they've gone up in value recently then, last time I looked a couple years ago you could get a mint low mileage S14a for under £4k. Although PH cars do tend to have PH Tax added on...!

You know what I mean, £5000 is a house deposit. Spending £5000 on a car would be nice but it is at the bottom of my list of things to do at the minute.
£5k down here wouldn't even get you a maximum-LTV, ridiculous-interest, hard-to-get, bend-you-over-and-rag-you-for-30-years 5% deposit - would need at least double for that :( So might as well shat it on a car lol

Hard to say what I'd spend it on really as I'd judge the requirement first THEN the budget to suit. But for £5k I'd probably be looking at either a decent quality modern ish car, so thinking Avensis T180. If I replaced the Celica I'd want an Evo 7 but on that budget I'd probably just get another decent GT4 and spend the change on mods and maintenance.

I had my eye on a 69 Dodge Coronet on American ebay a while back. Needed work but I could have had it bought and shipped to my door for about £5k. If someone put £5k in my hand now and told me to buy a car, thats where my cash would most likely go; something >45 years old and American.

Why is it?5% is minimum so in some areas 100k will get you a house.
Not everyone gets left money from relatives or gets handouts from mother and father.
That would take most people a long time to save.

It all depends where you live I guess.... £100K might just about scrape a nasty 1 bed flat in a horrible bit of town round here. But oooop north or somewhere with poor transport links in the south, you might be able to buy the whole town for that lol

for reference, I looked at moving to north wales as the houses were hugely cheaper than here, but I'd earn less, so technically have the same in my pocket at the end of each month, so not worth the move.

Johnny A
08-10-14, 05:52 PM

Round here 100k will get you a 3bed on an armpit estate.
In Hull where im from 100k will get you a tidy 3 bed in a fairly decent area.

My house deposit was 6 times that, and that was only 10%

My Dad bought an old farm house in Lincolnshire that required a fair bit of of work but we did it, cost him 95k a year ago this month and has 3/4 of an acre of land, he spent 16k on it, did most of the work him self and it's now a very nice county farm house. 100k can get a lot of house if you don't mind gutting it and starting again. I wouldn't ever buy a nice new house because I just like projects too much. So 5k is a deposit in Lincolnshire :)

Exactly, 100k will get an average starter home, 150k would get a nice 3-4 bed, oh and if you don't mind having an ex council house you can pick them up for even less and most are in nice areas.

Its amazing how house prices differ across the country.
