Been contemplating what engine to put in my nova, was planning on a redtop but I can get an x16xe for a quarter of the price and I know it will be lighter but would I be sacrificing a lot of performance

welcome to png & thankyou for reopening the big can of worms that is the big-block vs. small block argument..

as with everything, there are plus & minus points.

the x16xe will be a lot easier to install, with no mount/chassis mods or transmission swaps.

It's not a can of worms, he wanted a big block but found a small block for less.... But wants to know how good they are.

they are a great engine and easily choooonable etc

I'm worried about fitting it and thinking its too slow however I wasn't planning on doing much to a redtop so theoretically I could tune it up to be similar but I dont want to spend missives amounts otherwise I might aswell just put a redtop in

They like to throw rods out often so I never bother with them anymore.

hows your mechanical, and welding skills ? as theres alot more work involved in fitting the 2.0.

the front end of the car needs to be stitch welded along the seams, and shell strengthening plates are sometimes used, as well as inner wing modifications for alternator clearance.
it costs a fair bit more in parts too. driveshafts, and engine/gearbox mounts spring to mind. other things needed too.
one plus side of fitting the 2.0 is the wiring's easier, as it doesnt have an immobiliser or gearbox speed sensor (early engines dont anyway)
you are rewarded with more speed tho, at the end of the day.
its not an easy job, but id say if youve done an engine transplant before, and are a bit of a speed freak, and feeling up to the task, go for it.

check this guide out. the info will help :

if a 320D is too slow then a red top will be too slow for you too lol

Piece of piss to fit a redtop..
Theyre just not that fast anymore.
Most common rail diesels are a good match these days.
I was pratting about in mine 4years ago against a very nice lady in an audi derv estate.i had to go full twoc'er mode to get past her lol lol lol

They will do 60 in 7.5 seconds, if not faster! 130mph plus top speed, not exactly slow but a 2.0 170bhp gt tdi Golf would be about as fast, but it's a common Golf and will not have the same level of fun appeal!

Bought a 2.0 8v today so will see how that goes, might have to have some serious modifications in the future if its not going to be as quick as I think

unless its an seh I wouldn't bother, theyre crap. And that is speaking from experience.A healthy gte/gsi would keep up.

No point going for a 2.0 8v. All your doing is upsetting the handling of the car for no benefit. If your doing a engine swap no point half arsing it. Either go for a gsi lump so atleast the car will handle and feel factory or do it properly and get a let dropped in.

check the engine code, stamp, to see which 8v you have.

NE is 115 horse
SEH is 130 horse

the 16 valve XE, is 26 horse more than the SEH @ 156

if he's bought an NE, can the pistons be switched out to raise the comp, and make it 130 ?
