View Full Version : Heated Windscreen

My heated (front) windscreen has stopped working, only one of the elements is warming up.

As only one is working, its clearly getting power - I've tried replacing the two relays it uses as they looked a bit manky. Fuse and switch both appear Ok too. I can't see any visible damage to the screen but even if there was the odd small chip here or there it wouldn't stop the whole thing working?

I'm thinking possibly the earth point has crapped out or come loose? Any other ideas before I start pulling the dash apart to get to it?

can you do a continuity test on both sides with a multimeter

Will give that a try - might need to pull a few bits of dash out though. Hmm

Sorry for the hi jack

But does anyone have a wiring diagram for the heated screen?

iirc its just two sets of elements, with two wires each, one side to + other side to ground and away you go

I'd check your grounds.

Check if you have voltage coming out of the relay when operating the switch, if so then also check for voltage as close to the windscreen connections as possible. If theres voltage at the windscreen but not working its probably knackered
Just work your way from one end of the circuit to the other and if theres a loose connection/dodgy component you will come across it, just be systematic with it.
If yours is the same as mine its got two seperate circuits so this would explain why one side works and not the other.

Aye, its the dual circuit one - when I say only one element is working I mean just one of the wires running down the screen, not just one whole circuit. Which is why I'm a bit :colonchin:, why is that one working but not any of the 100'ish others lol

Ah ok, sounds like it might be shagged to me then. if one element is working then there is definately power to the screen, and unfortunately i dont think theres much you can do to repair it as its a sealed unit.
did you apply a sealant to the seal when you fitted? as if not then moisure can seep in between the layers of the screen and damage the elements.

I can't remember, it was a while ago. Probably not, but its weird that they've all gone kaput together (bar the one/two working elements) rather than a few handful at a time. [edit] Having said that, we may well have done, as there is a lot of gloop all round the edges and where the wires come out. We were a bit slapdash when fitting it lol

This is what I get from the continuity check - drivers side (one/two elements work):

Passenger side (doesn't work at all):

...This isn't really any good for driving with lol

Wiring rusted out? Get the screen out and have a look for damage. Mine looked very delicate.
