Well here we are again, a new project to start from scratch.

As a few may know my first ever car was a Hutchinsons cabriolet.

well that was 9 years ago and I've been itching for another ever since.

I got put on to this one in northern Ireland but it sold before I could get over for it :-(

so that left me trawling the Internet once again.

By chance I searched eBay a few weeks ago to find one being advertised for breaking and only a few ropey pictures, a phone number and 2 minutes remaining (this was at 8 o'clock on a Sunday morning) so I quickly scribbled the number down and sent the seller a message asking to view the car and to get a rough price.

An hour later no response so I figured I'd gather the missus and boy up and head out for the day (somewhere that if I got a text back would be a relatively short distance away from the car).

Just as we were trundeling down the m6 I got a phone call offering to view the car and that everything except the brand new Gaz golds and the disc rear axle.

So off I trotted to Rotherham to have a look over it myself (got stung on a rotten piece of **** cavalier 4x4 because it was 'what I wanted'), got there and was greeted by the same view as the pictures.

A neglected cabby half stripped with a let and f28 slung in, untreated stitch welded bay, new sills with unprotected welds and new wings half rubbed down and, as with the welds, sporting a nice covering of surface rust. After a good poke round to determine how solid the car was overall and what parts were there etc the inevitable question popped up.

I've never been overly keen on having a nova turbo, I've always preferred 1600 8v b road fun, but as with everything if the price was right I'd take the lot. He gave up what the engine owed him and a deal was done for not much more than what he paid for the engine. That was a month ago and today it finally got delivered :-) .

as you can tell this isn't a small or quick project but I hope to be able to make quite a few updates so keep an eye out :thumb:

Is it definitely a LET as that top hat makes it look like one of the old Courtenay XE conversions?

plus it has dispack which no LET had.

I do believe it could be an old xe turbo conversion but not 100%, the top hats definitely an old skool item that was never a 'to buy' option. I'll have to pull some numbers off the block and get in touch with courteny to see if they have any record of work that's been done or what is likely to have been done during a conversion and check it out.

Plan is gas monkey style, get engine running, pull it, weld new bits in and correct previous welding and send off for bodywork, refit engine neatly, fit upgraded suspension parts, source and fit suitable wheels, fit upgraded interior parts and new roof, sort out fine details like vinyl, correctly fitting plexiglass windows, tonneau cover and new press studs. Enjoy :) sounds easier than it'll be I'm sure.

I've began the search for more rot this week, stripping off as much stuff like lights, window surrounds and vinyl.

found a few bits where some plating will be needed, nsr window surround, the boot seem and the rear panel/boot floor. Also started sanding back the surface rust (roped the girlfriend and my son in to this too :) )

I've also been temp fitting stuff like intake hoses, rad and cooler to find out what pipework I need to get and just getting a basic idea of where everything should be routed.

removed the wings and glad to say when they've been fitted they have had a healthy dose of underseal thrown at them. Everything's solid enough to withstand a good blow from a flathead screwdriver so just need to sand the exterior down and give them a good dose of rust treatment, then some oxide primer until it's ready to go to the body shop.

checked the engine code and it is indeed a Courtenay xe turbo conversion. Not sure how I feel about that but that's what's in there and what I will be working with. I've emailed Courtenay to see what info they can provide me about the conversion but I'm still waiting to hear back from them.

also made a start deciphering the loom, this has me a tad confused as there's an awful lot of plugs that don't seem to do anything and there is main power and earth cables within it. Can anyone shed any light as to whether this would be an xe loom?

Although the front gearbox mount has been moved for the f28 I still have to shorten the selector arm, get and fit the rear mount spacer, notch the os chassis leg for the bottom pulley, source a single v alternator and have a turbo oil feed pipe made up.

It also seems that the f28 in it is an electronic speedo type :( and the clutch is either seized on or non existent so this will all need sorting when the engine is pulled out :(

I've swapped the wheels for ones that actually hold air which makes it so much easier to push in and out of the garage.

Hi Tommy your email hasn't been forwarded through to me yet, but we've had a very busy week getting ready for Trax this weekend.
Looking at it it's definitely one of our turbo conversion plenum's, have a look between the head and the block line and see if it has a decompression plate in there, if it has it's more likly to be one of our conversions. As the cars have got older, changed hands or been stripped etc we do see bits turn up all over the place sometimes complete but more often missing bits. Some times it's just a turbo bolted to a standard engine etc. If you want anymore info or a chat about it give me a call and I will gladly see what I can dig out if the archive's and the old grey matter for you. Or if your Trax this weekend come and give me a look we are in pit garage 7.

Hey Jon, cheers for the info, it definitely has the decompression plate so I'm confident it's the full thing.

As far as I can tell the only thing missing from the actual engine is the turbo oil feed pipe. (From the oil filter area to the turbo) which should be easy enough to have a replacement made up.

As these conversions were done before I started in the Vaux scene and were becoming scarce with the introduction of the let my knowledge of them is somewhat lacking so any info you could dig out for it would be great.

Got a bit of progress done today with my afternoon off.

Finally got the last of the surface rust off and treated with rust buster fe-123. Any area that had surface rust or even the slightest hint it may rust got a healthy coating of the stuff.

Fitted the turbo oil feed pipe, this caused a small headache as unlike the lets this conversion never used a banjo bolt setup but took a chance on a 2wd Sierra cosworth braided pipe which fits a treat. Also got a new oil filter on (still need to connect the oil cooler though before I crank it over to get oil pressure up).

Been building up quite a collection of parts together, a drivers door (as mines previously been bent out then bent back meaning the 1/4 window doesn't seat in the seal correctly), an injection fuel tank, full mk 2 car loom, electric window motors/mechs, 100mm rear springs (until I can get rear coilovers), front coilovers, wide mouth gsi bumper, mk2 grill, big intercooler with silicone and hard piping and some lowered tie bars and mounts.

Decided to trial fit the cooler, pipework, bumper and grill before everything gets pulled apart for final welding and paint.

Yeah everything's coming off Benn, T bar a strengthening beams are going to be powder coated, the full engine setup is coming out as is the dash, everything else is just sat in the car atm due to the garage being quite small but I'm putting up a shed at home soon to store all parts from the strip down.

I can happily report that the car has had its first taste of electricity for nearly a decade, had it hooked up to the astra for 45 mins or so and didn't burst into flames lol.

Also dried up the water that was sat in the spark plug recess and removed the plugs to check for any running issues. Glad they all came out problem free, despite the volume of rust that has built up, but my immediate running concern is how rich it appears to have been running. I'm thinking that the superchips ecu may be over fuelling the engine but it's something to look into when the engine is back up and running.

Engine is getting removed this weekend and the shell will be welded over the next couple of weeks so I should be updating with some structural pictures soon (I know you all like seeing new metal going back in to these)

How does your roof attach? I've found there's 2 different designs, one uses tenax fasteners with it up caps and press studs and others use twist clips that go through elongated eyes in the roof then twist to lock across the eye.

Well that lot should keep you busy Tom, I am interested to find out how the XE conversion get its extra fuelling - however if its anything like the 1.3T courtney conversion I encountered it will be a total bodge and will need replacing with LET stuff.

Got the car moved out of the storage garage today and off to the garage doing the welding. Stripped the last parts out of the bay like engine, box and master cylinder/servo. Hopefully the next time it's back in my garage it'll be 100% sold and sporting a fresh coat of paint. That's a full job of inside, outside, engine bay and boot. Then it'll be a case of get everything refitted.

Things are moving on at last, the welding has now been done (£300 bill for that, can't grumble) and the car has now been shipped off for bodywork. Other than that I've just been collecting parts for the rebuild. So far I've got a nice new exhaust system, some minty mint doors, a full mk2 dash conversion, some dished lenzo rs5 wheels and probably more I've forgotten lol, here's some pics I have anyway.

So its been 6 weeks since I last updated so here's what's gone on since it was sent to the painters:

Once it got to the painters it went straight on the ramp to weigh the job up, this was the first time the painter had been able to get up close to the car fully. Turns out there was a lot of welding missed or not done properly so a complete strip down was done, doors off, all running gear removed, fuel tank, dash, wiring loom, external vinyl the lot.

From there various (a lot of intricate) welding was done, rear chassis legs and spring cups, rear panel, boot and windows seal ridges, filler neck, front inner arches, rear inner arches. More seam welding in engine bay, arches roll and sealed to inner arches.

As well as the welding a lot of underseal was scraped off, a hole for the fuel pump access was cut and the nsr rear valance was re fabricated as the rear bumper did not fit over it.

The new front doors were stripped down as well and the dent in the rear quarter was pulled out.

It has now had its first coat of stone chip applied to the underside including all wheel arches and engine bay.

Next is allowing the underseal to fully cure before hitting it again with another coat of underseal including front and rear valances.

Second coat of stone chip on, there was a reaction in one of the front wheel arches so the affected area has been taking right back for a more thorough going over.
