so ive picked up this nova from a local lad as he has had enough of throwing money at it and wanted something more modern (he got a 106 gti so he is winning!)

SPEC

-engine-
1400 spi engine
f13 box
cone airfilter
s/s exhaust

-running gear-
15" cav fan blades (in purple)
256mm ate front brakes
unknown short shocks
110mm custom rear lowering springs
90mm custom front springs

-styling-
sri red interior
cav/astra steering wheel
shortened gear stick
random StIckoRZ!
gte front bumper and grill
delocked doors (with poppers and a remote alarm)

reasons I got it cheap, it needs two small patches welded in the engine bay. and a repair to one splash guard and the head gasket has let go.

other things I want to sort/do are...

-CHANGE THE WHEELS
-worn drivers bolster
-clean up the interior/full valet
-repaint bumpers (thinking of going for the standard upol grey)
-potentially replace the front bumper as its not sitting right at all
-replace the half painted rear lights with std units
-remove the front clear indicators and repeaters. replacing them with std orange ones
-waxoil all the inner seals. doors, wings, boot etc....
-convert it back to running a carb (while still retaining the 14nv bottom end)
-polly bush it through out

THE LOW DOWN ISSUE

Right I think it needs to be raised as its very very low!! to the point I couldn't even half bump it up my kerb out side with out it grounding its self out.
I don't want to ruin the look of the car as I like it but its just not (turning in to a old man) PRACTICAL! so I will raise the rear by adding wound down adjusters (should raise it nearly 20 mm on the back) and putting fully would down fk Coilovers on the front

engine wise I want a tuned 8v carb engine it seems right giving the age of the motor. I want to use what I already have laying around so I was thinking of something like this...

14nv bottom end
12st head
13sb inlet and carb
tublar manifold
highlift cam..............................would be aiming for a realistic 80/90 hp hopefully

Looks a good base to start with, it's funny how these saloons have become cool when in the 90s nobody wanted one.

Good luck with the build bud.

Bar the hideous wheels that's nice.
Why would you go back to orange indis tho? Clean ones look much better and suit the black paint much better. I'd keep its ride high as it is, looks great... Just don't bump kerbs.

OK so today was the day I inspected the headgasket issues....so let the fun begin!

the car is so low my crappy jack will not fit under the car (anyone recommended a low jack around the 100 quid mark?) so I had to use a scissor jack to get it going and I hate those things had one bend on me in the past so I don't trust them!

so it was all chucked in the boot head ready for the pikeys next time they come by with there stolen bell ringing

I will be buying a new head from the local scrappy tomorrow to save waiting around to have the head skimmed. Should be running by tomorrow as long as I can find somewhere open that holds the headgasket set and bolts in stock

frecking EXCITED!!!! at the prospect of driving a nova again :D

Southie
30-08-14, 08:57 PM
Can't you get the head fixed then? Surely a decent skim would suffice.

turbojolt
30-08-14, 09:00 PM
i can but I want the car running this weekend. near impossible to get somewhere to skim a head and get it back to me the same day especially on a sunday lol. a scrappy one will only cost the same as a skim so its all win

EwanG
30-08-14, 09:23 PM
Hey turbo! There is no need for a low jack. Just drive the front on to a 20mm+ or so piece of wood, or old slab to pack it up etc. Then your jack will fit under the car :thumb:

With regards to a jack bud, i have one of these, Ebay item number below, Cheap and cheerful. Mines lifted combo van full of scrap, my nova, corsas, mondeo, Itll take anything of reasonable weight.

Novas looking great, As said above id wait and get your head skimmed, Else you could end up buying a duff head and be out of pocket.

Well that idea went to ****. Got to the scrap yard nice and early found nothing but 12v's and td's corsa so no good to me.......then i find the ONE (even tho it was a 1200 head not a 1400) spent about 30 mins removing the head to find its all burnt inside the cam box and on all the lifters. nasty! looked like its been run with no oil for ages. So i left empty handed and annoyed

So i will have yo find time in the week to take the head somewhere to be skimmed after all. Gutted i was hoping to go out for a drive in it tonight :(

the hatch in now my parts car mate. its been a real struggle for me trying to get it up and working again. when someone else strips down a car and looses parts it was always going to be a uphill battle. mix that with my lack of knowledge and skill it was never going to see the road again imo. such a shame as it was/is such a good shell...but atless it will be breathing new life into this one I guess, still it will be a sad day when I see it leave. if I had the room I would keep it lol

might be taking a grinder to it to help save the loon from some tin worm ive found in areas you cant get panels for...but nothing major will be happening until after September for personal reasons

just a small selection of some of the crap Im contending with...I hate wiring also appears to be other wires tucked behind the dash that go to nowhere parts of the stereo loom are wrapped in celotape. lucky this thing hasn't gone up in flames

18-10-14, 05:09 PM
Yeah, make sure he did the switch live mod for the coil, make sure it's a good size wire not that tiny thing from the 1.0

turbojolt
18-10-14, 05:21 PM
the switch live has a fair size wire spliced onto the engine loom. this was originally a 1200 going by the v5

turbojolt
19-10-14, 12:48 PM
so the wiring has to go.....as does the ****ty spi system

pulled the 12st head of the hatch along with the 1300sr carb and inlet ;)

hopefully I get some early finishes this week so I can pull the carb fuel tank off the hatch and get that installed along with finishing the wiring and plumbing, going to be a little monster!

Well. with the ever growing list of things needed doing to this car (FFS)...and the weather getting worse and worse I made a very hard decision to sell my hatch (RIP) to Andy to free up the room in my garage so the one or two days free I get a week can no longer be ruined by that B!TCH mother nature

if your curious to see if it runs, you could get a jerry can full of petrol, and chuck both the fuel-in, and return hoses into the can, so there both submerged, and it should pump just like a tank would.

Pretty bad then eh! Seen worse but its down to how far you wanna go with it? I would try and save it dont like killing nova's. Maybe leave it for now and have a think whats best to do with it.

im currently sat with a pad and pen trying to work out how much it will cost to save and if it will be worth while doing. ive wanted to learn fab and welding skills for ages and this could be a great way to learn...but at the same time its a bit daunting!

You might as well just get stuck in a plate at a time mate, it's great to learn and there's nothing to lose :)

i like that thinking it really is either a case of fixing or scraping so you are right noting to loose

just had a read of the how to guide regarding front panel replacement looks easy enough to be fair as long as i take my time i should be ok, im sure loads of lads on here will have advice on how to fab up bits and bobs

Best thing to do ia a bit at a time.dont overwhelm yourself with work.
a decent tip for patchwork-make the repair piece then draw round it and cut out the rot.
Im only a text away if ya need advice mate.

As Andy said, do a bit of cardboard added design. Make templates up. then copy over in to metal.
You'll want a pair of snips and a hammer. Then you can make each bit, get the fit bang on, then tack it in to place bit at a time. then weld it all up in one hit from there..

jimbob-mcgrew
19-01-15, 01:17 PM
ouch, rusty bitch.
theres a fair amount of holes there to keep you busy.

like andy said, i'd just do 1 patch at a time if i were you, its the least amount of headache, rather than swamping yourself.
and bens technique is good : bang on fit > tac in place > weld >

if youve got access to a vice, it makes metalwork so much easier, especially if you need to put 90 degree folds into any pieces.

Im buying a welder this weekend clarke 151 te

i still have some 1.2mm steel from a old cross member repair on the hatch.

cheers for the tips guys i have a set of tinsnips but they seem to really struggle in 1.2mm stuff and as you cut with then the metal starts to curve :/

Ben when you say a hammer do you mean somekind of bodyshop flat headed item?

Use a 0.8mm thick cutting disc in an angle grinder.

You need curved aviation snips to cut sheet steel without it curling up ;)

Good welder.
1.2 is quite thick. And cutting it with snips will be a nightmare. 1mm disc on a grind to cut....

Yes a bodyshop style hammer is good, but you can use any hammer with a flat head.

Buy some gloves from screwfix mate.3quid they are and that way you can support the torch with your left hand to steady the torch.
Just do short zaps when welding cars.the steel on novas is absolutely shocking to weld.
as for what way to weld, youre supposed to push the weld pool away from the torch, but for foil thin **** like cars do whatever way works.

you can see ive been going at all the areas rust was just starting to form at with a knot wheel on a grinder hopefully it wont be coming back after I treat the areas aswell.

trying to stichweld the legs and im not sure if the brown surrounding the welds means my gas isn't high enough? either way im not happy with them so I will flap disc them back and have a second pass with some argon

that's all I can be arsed to do today. hoping for a fair bit more progress this weekend ideally want to start lining up the new front end.

I'd say a bit more power on the chassis legs for more penetration.

Also you're welding right next to open fuel pipes with fuel vapor in you absolute fool, get them removed from the engine bay immediately.

turbojolt
17-02-15, 01:36 PM
I turned the power up to max on the second picture

no fun without danger.

Benn
17-02-15, 01:41 PM
I was about to say the same as IaIn, fuel pipes and welding are a no no. Trying to get out of a small engine bay fast when there is a fire is very hard!

Also, why are you not doing all the seam? or are these just test/start welds?

turbojolt
17-02-15, 01:48 PM
just trying to get a feel for the welder right now, I will be doing the entire engine bay.

noted guys fuel pipes will be removed, health and safety gone ad this place lol

Right I need to get this motor road worth with in 4/5 months as I will soon be forced to move out of my house and even more annoying the garage as the landlord wants to sell up the <unt...so the plans of making this thing a head turner over the space of a year or so are out the window the plan now is just to get it road worth screw what it looks like. the custom retrimmed interior, banded steels and potential big block are no longer going to happen.

i started stripping back the engine bay to get rid of all the annoying little bits of crust around some of the seams, also started stich welding the legs the welds don't look pretty but they have made penetration...

rather than giving up, and probably scrapping the shell, how about just blasting a load of quickly cut plates on, here, there, and everywhere, get it strong, and driveable, and bollox to what it looks like.

then youll get a years worth of driving out of it atleast

TJ I hate to say this but you give up too easy, it's not the first project you've had loads of good ideas on but then basically I think you either get bored or just give in.

Crack on, chin up and finish it mate ;)
