i was hoping i could simply get a 1.4 carb downpipe, to link the 1.6 manifold to the rest of the existing 1.2 system, but im not sure if the 1.4 exhaust will clear the sump.

i looked into a few various options, and because of the difference in the mating connections of the factory 1.6 setup, it looks to me like the whole system will have to be changed ?

do i have any other options, as i cant afford to replace the lot.

dont need anything fancy, just something that fits, so the car can drive.

cheers

Firstly get a wanted ad up for a 1600 exhaust system & see what your options are after. Shouldnt be too hard to find an unwanted 'kwik fit' front downpipe & centre section.

Failing that, with your new engine in, take it to a garage & get them to make the systems mate up by welding & swapping flanges about. Its going to cost you whatever you do, a 1200cc exhaust system wont help the 1600 engine in any way & means you'll be attacking the problem twice as it seems you are aware.

as long as you use a factory 4-2-1, it should work.

i put my e16se into a mk1 astra many years ago & it fitted the original 1300 exhaust fine.

Is the 1600 exhaust bore not the same as the the 1200's???

it is, but the stock 1200 carb one is a 4-1 & crap, and i think the 1.2spi one is slightly short, so it hits the sump (iirc)

The downpipe on a 1.2 system is frightfully small, I cant imagine that's the same bore as the 1600.

it actually is the same diameter, just a crappier design
