Well I've been without a project for around 6 years now after loosing the love with my GSi, plus life changes of moving into mine and the missus' first house together.
So the last time the GSi was at a show was Billing 2007 and Trax 2007

SO running forward to last weekend. Lou and I dragged what was left of the GSi out of the garage in preparation of what is to come later in this post.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/novaload/IMAG0994_zpsblkt6t1v.jpg~original

then this weekend I picked up this little gem. a 1989 G reg 1.2 Nova Sting, 3 owners from new with 74k on the clock.

Pretty tidy, needs some rust clearing but a hell of a lot better than the GSi! Plans, well as I've kept hold of the GSi 1.6 lump that will be going in, loose the Red wheels, they will be sold on. better brakes but above all enjoying it!

You'd had it sitting hiding for 7 years? Crazy. New one looks very nice and tidy!

It pains me to say it but yes, it was tucked away, but I had lost the love for it. Plus it never was a true GSi, only by name on the v5!

Nice looking motor that, looks like this will be a very clean nova when finished.

Loved the look of the old gsi before hand also. Don't know why but loved those novadose grills on the mk1s

BRoadGhost
22-10-14, 11:07 PM
How do you fall out of love with your nova?

A smoothed rear bumper like that, dare I say it, might even look better than a MK2 item.

NovalutionGSi
23-10-14, 10:10 AM
Novadose Grill will be remaining away from the Sting, I'm not trying to recreate my GSi, but it will be similar.

It spent 6 years in the garage while we were doing things to the House or I was working away or fixing my Corsa Sport. so managed to rebuild the Engine on the GSi after 3 years! then looked at the shell, not that you can see it from the picture at the top but the bulkhead had gone rotten due to a poorly fitted windscreen and sadly my welding talents don't exist! however, even though the Sting maybe a 1.2 and be in desperate need of a front anti roll bar the love for the nova is back!

NovalutionGSi
26-11-14, 12:59 PM
So hopefully soon the project will pick up some pace. Will be picking the Nova up at the weekend after getting the arches adjusted to fit the Alloys. so while the Nova has been out of the garage I've been able to get on with a small refurb of the shocks and make some progress with the other half's replacement ZR front wing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/novaload/Nova%20String/IMAG1240_zpswktepkbo.jpg~original
just starting to clean up the fronts to spray.

Then reading plenty of threads on how to fit a Digi Dash into a Mk1 dash and hearing of all the cutting on the Mk1 dash I thought I would have a go and go about it in a different way, I have 2 sets anyway so to butcher one set didn't really bother me. my thinking is that the Digi clocks must be able to fit some how with out carrying out dash mods. so I started trimming!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/novaload/Nova%20String/IMAG1225_zpsrkxb0nwe.jpg~original

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/novaload/Nova%20String/IMAG1226_zpsa4c28htw.jpg~original

as you can see the PCB does stick out slightly to far so some careful trimming was required. however once I had got to this stage I realised that once all back together again it still wouldn't fit. So I had an idea, why couldn't I fit the clocks in a deconstructed design. the LCD part with the mileage would sit in the Mk1 dash perfectly (ish!) and allow for the rest to sit behind the dash maybe attached to the steering column support bracket. it would have to have flying leads for all the lamps etc but I think it could be possible.

On a simple mod front, have bought a set of clear side repeaters and chromed amber blubs.

looks clean.

those front shocks have fat big-boy shafts. they must be good

new wheels suit it too :thumb:

27-11-14, 07:50 AM
Cheers Jimbob, yes the Shocks are very good, Bilstiens, think they are B4s. the GSi handled really well on them, like it was on rails.
The wheels are something different from the GM family, I think I have only seen 2 other novas with them on excluding any I have owned!

NovalutionGSi

Have now got the Nova back from the bodyshop to allow the fitment of the Alloys I have. although it is nothing major I would have cocked it up, plus 5 year warranty on it as well!

SO following on from the weekends work I have found that although it has been lowered the shocks are still standard hence why the front sits a lot higher. Plus the drivers side front arch needs to be cleaned up as well.

Which wheels are you on about? the 5 spokes or the red steels? I've tried my GTE grill on it against the one fitted and tbh the GTE one didn't really inspire me. Might try it again at some stage.

Not a lot been posted on this recently. been refurbing the Dampers ready to go on. Fitting the Piper Stainless system that was fitted to the GSi. Found that the 4 branch of the 1.6 fits the 1.2 and that it has a hole in it where the 4 pipes join....can fix it on the outside but no chance on the bit in the middle! So have ordered a Ashley competition 4 branch, 10m of Exhaust heat wrap and some new exhaust bolts.

So, this might be something that some of you might like, other might not. Couple of the guys at work are shooters so I thought I would ask to see if I can get 16 Spent cartridges which were hand to me last week,

plan was to fit them over a set of Nut caps, however the cap and cartridge are the same size so tried without the caps.

Some rough guess work and the length is spot on. Left 2 little tabs to fold back inside when fitting them so they are a tight push fit. not yet taken the car for a run to see how they fair on a drive.
Will see how they go.

Shock horror....

I've ordered some parts! Finally had some time to get a plan together. Bodywork isn't going to be this year, so I'm looking at handling and brakes. Bush kit has been ordered, just need to book in the ARBs, tie bars etc in for powder coating. Will also get the same place to paint the V6 calipers, bring the front and rear bumpers back to life and change the colour of the side skirts.

Also have a plan in place for a set of throttle bodies for the 16se in the long term as well. Might have a busy few months coming up as the 1st show will be at the end of April....

So, since Photobucket fucked up, I had lost the will to update this, yes I had gone through and adjusted all the pictures back so they worked but uploading more to there was never going to happen.lol

So its about time I made a few updates. So to start with I had got the FlowFlex Bush kit for the whole car, the car had no ARBS so to start with I started with the front end. This was a full GSi ARB, Tie Bars, Arms and mounts as well.

Now, I may have already posted the Clocks, but it seems I've missed some of the process! the Sting had 4 Dial clocks, I wanted 6 dials. so I found these on Ebay

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4757/40030697212_104b1039e8_o.jpg
Stage 3, fit the lockwood "white" dial kit 9its more a cream than white) and paint the needles black with red tips to show up on the Dials. Fit and Enjoy.
however they will need to go off and be calibrated, the Speedo over reads by 10mph, so 30mph is really 20!:eek:lol

So that was the simple bits, the more bolt on and have fun bits. Next bit the Brakes!

When I had the GSi, I had a Set of V6 Calibra Calipers from a Local lad who had a Corsa Sport. they sat on the GSi for a while and when I stripped it, the idea was they might go on my Corsa Sport, but I Sold that and got the Astra, so sold the Brakes to the guy who bought the Sport, he then sold the Corsa but kept the brakes and then sold them back to me again about 3 years later!

They are in a sorry state,

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4661/28284006139_28688e273d_o.jpg
So stripping them down I found the Pistons to be pretty poor

Sent the Calipers and Carriers off to be powder coated
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4697/39164485475_ccbae5848a_o.jpg

While I was going about this upgrade I dug out the GSi Servo and Master Cylinder, Again, the Servo needed some TLC

Now at this point I'm well happy, just had the passenger side to do, which I couldn't do in the garage. few weeks later it was all complete. Or so I thought!
I had some issues, 1st off, the goodridge hoses were not direct fitments, the end of the hard pipes on the car were different ends so that meant I needed to build to new brake lines up.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4716/40029082622_39092ab88c_o.jpg
Problems solved or so I thought. I set about bleeding the system up. thought I had got that right but had not feel in the pedal at all. it got to the point that I gave up on it, fed up with getting no where.
Christmas came and went...

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/955/41757574231_582eb905cd_o.jpg
So I had dad come over to give me a hand, did the usual, bit of grease on some bits, checked the pistons moved etc. did everything, then I mentioned, we should bleed them again... can anyone spot the issue...

All ready for its 1st show of the year at Earsham, plans for the year, enjoy it, get some quotes for the bodywork for the winter coming. maybe get the GSi lump out and give it a tidy up ready to go into this. need to work out the power delivery, whether it is Carbs or Throttle bodies.

Well as it turns out, I should have looked at my Astra's calipers... although the carriers are different the piston part is the same model. But yes, I've put this out there so I expect a ripping from House and off white Nova Ian. Lol

Photos to follow but it's been a busy winter period,.
Nova was packed off to the bodyshop in October. I dropped the engine out for the guy. Some well has been done, not that it needed much. Engine bay is painted and engine going back in on Saturday.
Picked up a full set of Twin 40s, inlet, linkages etc plus a Cam as well.

I've also order a full set of Hoses and clips.

So that leads me on to the exciting bit. getting the colour on.
Phil started with the Panels, bonnet, boot, wings etc. before moving the shell into the paint booth.

at this point i dropped off the Bumpers and Side skirts for the rebuild, however i was in for a shock. from what i had been quoted the cost had risen quite dramatically because of "extra" work Phil had done. only extra work that hadnt been discussed is shown in the next post.

NovalutionGSi

So although i didn't plan on having the bumpers done, not having the boot floor done either, these seem to get done as well, hence the extras! i wasn't exactly pleased with it but in the long run it has been worth it.

Funny enough i went from that to the Dual. personally i like the twin. the issue i had is that i was still running the exhaust from the GSi, sadly when it was ordered it was for a Mk2 and didn't sit right on the mk1 kit.
Its something different.

So over last Xmas I started to take the 1.6 apart. Gave it a lick of paint along with some of the pipes too. Test fit of the carbs were of course needed before the strip down, picked up on a few bits that would need to be tweaked on the rebuild.

Block certainly needed some love. Nice coat of black enamel paint to refresh it.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/0b170b273ed5baaffca9680fcf7a084b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/97b3d76d7a0c61b73675f6fe750d6050.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/cb4232611acaef8ae0ad71d24a730368.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/be8444d2b9bae21d120b5e75b5881fe1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/7f473e4b044fdfabaf5b828d6c7d4dbd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/36a248523f424c2cad9efd9268565e0d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/16f81b964669e0ce655b564320ded388.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/9556813a0a1de2cba2b7e50e92e1e122.jpg

Oil pump taken off, cleaned up and a new seal fitted.

Crank then taken out, flywheel and crank taken to be lightened and Balanced although lockdown 2.0 may elongate when I'll see them back.

So while waiting I've put the carbs on to the manifold ready to go on and changed the Cam as well.

So the Nova is currently sat in the garage on axle stands. Only meant to fit new rear flexes.. but again, the steel brake lines don't mate to the flexes. New full lines to be run.

But that did mean crawling around under the car, I then remembered the rear flow flex polybushes for the beam.
Yep, the rear beam is off now...
While its off, I'm sticking a few coats of hammerite to at least give it a bit of protection. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/cb872682fd18c0b23249f157c41f4dcc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/db844b46562dd293fca74093bc44df25.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/fdb494ac035e07d651a19f1edb46e75a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/65327fe49130fc4b5966f02d78b2f450.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/90fb7736569ff1ed66d32e02d2c7d657.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/167ce25db577cd767f596cc9a957505b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/e1cf5aad98c0782c585387a7baaf24ff.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/d669e622a6b949d3ca492c01a9221df7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/e748b6f73794125533e10110344758a6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/e8057035aff7780d0c0b6f3d9a9baf16.jpg

Oh, and I may have spent out on these too...
Rears fitted at present.

I also thought I'd also treat the car to a nice Richbrook cover as well.

So I'm hoping to have the engine in over Christmas.
Add another coat of waxoyl on the underside. Get it rolling again and get the shocks set up too. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/0d6188116c4911be315a840c90f7b96d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/a60e88710f86d3febb8a66e0bbb9e794.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/d9eae414be437bed674cad8aa6e4612d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/b3a728b878f521126cf71875b8919694.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/7cb7d36f626c7d7434baedc4386a845a.jpg

Bit more done with mine. All new brake pipes now made up (by hand) and ready to refit.

Then had a moment to sort out the MOT advisory.. yes the CV boot. Also bought a box of goodies for the front. New bearings and top mounts. Certainly needed the mounts suspect this was causing the crashing and banging. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210130/7ed6b0fb88e32f0c68cb9e7ab5621cce.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210130/7fc1a9a15fb3e0507de06ca973f2716e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210130/aab4d8eb4d62ca78bc8bd70929d49828.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210130/0b84fb2331c2f26c56388f74f5a08a77.jpg

She looks sweet! Interesting choice of exhaust, don't recall seeing a twin pipe on an MK1 bumper before, and nothing beats a GTE rear bumper. I've been contemplating what exhaust to go for on the LET build as I have a GTE rear bumper too, but that'll be a fair few months down the line.

Do love the metallic grey you've used to the skits, rear bumper lip and spoiler, what colour is it?

The reason I have the twin is that the old exhaust used to be on my old GSi that had been unfacelifted to a GTE.
But the piper system was for a Mk2 not the mk1 bumper setup.
Que modifications to the bumper and the twin arrived. It's also got 3 rings round the tips which ties in with the bumpers.

The grey was an unknown to what colour it was, had it scanned and it comes back to a Mitsubishi colour. I'll have a look at the can I had made up, not sure if it has the name on there.

Oh right, either way it looks different and good.

Thought I best update the thread. So after getting the shocks on the next thing I needed to do was replace the front to rear brake lines, not that they needed to be changed but due to the new flexis to be fitted. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/63975ff757bc20513fde16cf35983086.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/380fae44c182fc2a74ec69574cf548db.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/b327d03e5a0a26d472f9763ecf6041e6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/775c020c13f38b683868ec7e31089639.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/97b043eafd302bd83d357c73fce1d7e6.jpg

Also found a place to supply a pair of replacement gas struts, then had them Carbon wrapped.

Car then had to move out of the garage while the garden was done. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/2827be5b76fc0574e9594678ddacf059.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/270491bf7f421aed4a6d324d0127886d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/813fbfe5e8da7b2c70127acf653d233b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/559a947ca02cde7c06367a6888d1bd49.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/0fe335f894612f89c1c3ec58b551b815.jpg

So with the car out the way it would be rude not to start getting the 1.6 back together.
So we have a now lightened and Balanced flywheel
Balanced crank
New piston rings (wonder why)
New main and big end bearings.
ARP big end bolts as well.
All torqued up. Now need to fit the baffle plates and oil pickup. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/6adae651b9dd57d223a5d8b79d2c5739.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/29bed36450bf9f741048d3b3e0cfb75c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/ead5f927832cfe081769c19f5efc5f90.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/4452b4f6802756601c2eff38cb650bed.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/800cbe027f2bd40553019454b89bd0c3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/a5dc3e8b6f2cd0886f79bf1022e8b689.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210805/a96b68c16783ca7954088a9bbc5f3b44.jpg

So update time.
Engine has built up, new cambelt, water pump, gaskets the lot.
Decided to give the cam cover something different to give a nod back to what the car is. Decal reproduced by a mate and sent over to Underwraps in Norwich.
Add to that the red stainless bolts as well.

Also bought a fuel pump, pressure regulator and oil catch can.
What I didn't know was I needed to lower the Alternator, so new bracket for that and bought a rose jointed turnbuckle to help adjust the aux belt.

Did a bit of CAD work for the catch can. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/1af0732991e68b7853998944696391f3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/7bb93aa43e3dba9243c097134feb825f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/626f8928b615f8e5331eef0e28f9a51f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/9dc62346dd1c34d71d93c5f5a1ccc6cc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/651ec7f60b71916e950d9b7d499280d3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/ee5af0f2356ac4f9807edd2aa129da46.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/25206d8aa6a9bff9500cdcb294ff25e0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/dbf5c8293c9ddab5a8c94c3588d10a7f.jpg

It isn't a Nova if it hasn't got a roll cage or sound system. With this not really ever going to be a track car and after finding my other half's old Kicker Sub, operation BOOM BOOM was a go. I went with a false floor option and really makes the boot look a lot neater.

And to bring it up to date, the Alpine ezi-dab-go unit, now all 3 cars in the fleet have DAB, the Focus since a LED light conversion drops out when I brake, the Golf just has crap reception whereas the Nova as probably the best dab out of the lot. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/d83ecd3c6ee151575cd7b0119abeeb4d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/e0874205aee25a0ff166cc18f07751d0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/385a35628fa4f9285ea43688fd7d014e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/bb83b07e4a4368ffae7434e6780c46ad.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/6953dddb56e90fad67f992ee973c1c3d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/4101bf9236052b18af848aff85bc1c5f.jpg

Another issue I had was that the gear gaiter (reproduction rubber one) caused the car to jump out of gear, mainly 2nd.
So found a Richbrook Vauxhall Gaiter, solved the issue.
But then the standard gearknob looked shit! Christmas present to myself, more Richbrook kit.

Other thing, I went all out with Autobeam kit and bought a set of H4 LED headlight bulbs. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/0a325cfc9fd5650a02fbd5332ab5e5cc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/c279b8b72aa8dc4aff8bb6e411c46de6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/5ad0e2ceaab496c74d19a21c6a3d24a5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/cc7da2f260b32409f2cba1a77e30c339.jpg

And finally the GSi radiator was not happy.
So over the winter I ordered a 42mm thick alloy radiator from Radtec, not cheap but I think it's worth it.

Quick clean up and it's ready for the show season of 2023.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/f411b9162c1d1feaa57a2e19e21cb24b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/f9372cc2e590a06a9bd1449a1bd31439.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/a7742ad6ddef9906b1d573d098ed94e7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/44f406627e0217e9bb6c6c4bfcf595cf.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230529/9adbc8bb9bdc2cf2e279a7f2d22db176.jpg

Money well spent on a proper radiator, the off the shelf mass produced ones are a bit of a risk

Cheers chaps.
No I agree, the standard rad had started to leak on one of the plastic end tanks. At least now with the pipes all done up tight and in the right places the cooling system is perfect for the summer.
Forgot to add, I'm shocked at how much space the slim line fan doesn't take up.
