Driving back from my brothers house last night and the oil light came on, pulled in at the petrol station and bought some oil, waited about 30minutes for the engine to cool and then toppped up the oil.

Everything was going fine until the oil light came on again except this time there was a really loud knocking noise from the engine, pulled over in a layby and had a look under the bonnet, nothing seemed out the ordinary, went to start it to see if it was still there and everything seized up, so i gave mr aa man a phone, took the details off me and said the time is now 4:25am, someone will be with you by 6:45. I was pretty p!ssed off about waiting and bucket seats arnt the most comfiest thing about for long periods of time.

Got towed home and he seemed to think the cam has seized.

all in all its been a long, horrible night which a little drive home is gonna cost quite abit to get sorted :(

that was my thoughts exactly ste, i aint gotta clue what im gonna do.

its strange really cuz there is no oil leak, so unless if somethings blocked which was causing the oil not to reach where its ment to be, thats the only thing i can think of.

If the oil pressure drops the first thing to seize is the cam as it requires pressure to throw the oil from the sump up to the top end.

Might get away with a new oil pump and cam + carrier.

I have a spare GSi cam and carrier if you need em.

there was a really loud knocking noise from the engine,
Gaz

ive got the same noise coming from mine ;/ everyone has mentioned about oil though in some way or form, but my oil levels have been fine. it started off as a little ticking noise, but now its when u start the car, and mental loud knocking/ticking noise when ur moving off/accelarating. take foot off the accelarator and it doesnt make the noise?

any ideas what that is?

(i drive a peugeot 309 SRi btw :P ) *hides as it aint a nova*

just go and get another 1.4 engine. much simpler than trying to fix that greek tragedy thats under your bonnet

does anyone know if its ok to do a straight swap for a gte engine? what else will need updating for it?

Mark
14-09-03, 03:51 PM
Gazza, you can't put a 1.6 GTE in........ 'cos you would then be Gazza16GTE....

I had the same loud knocking noise from my engine in me astra, started off as a little rattle, ended up sounding like a fiat 126, took it to a garage that said it was fooked, turns out the head gasket had blown, stripped it down, new gasket & timing belt and off it went sweet as a nut.

i had noticed a very slight knocking noise afew days ago but it went away so i thought nothing of it.

hopefully if it is the headgasket i could be back on the road in afew days.

The knocking sound it was kickin out this morning sounded like a heard of tranny vans revin the engine!

The engines are very common, look in your local breakers where you can buy mk2 wings for ?1 (allegedly).

i guess when i got my mk1 front wing from the scrappy near me for my old nova for a fiver i was ripped off!

lol isnt it you that said there is a breakers in Derby where parts are very very cheap? I know that benji was talking to someone about it once saying that you can get GSi sideskirts for ?10 etc?

Even so 1400 engines are fitted to a lot of novas and no doubt all the bottom ends would be the same.

i got a bootlid with sr spoiler, window and lifter for 15 i think (few months back), its called albert looms anyone round here recommends it as being the cheapest place to go for spares.

I got 2 headrests for when when i had my back seats for like less than a fiver.

i never said nothing about side skirts?? but if you were to see some in there you wouldn't pay mor3 than a tenner. what i did say was if you need a front wing go to looms' and see whats in, regardless of what the wing is from you will be unfortunate to pay more than ?10
