What vinyl are you removing? A heat gun should be good enough for the pillars or bottom half of an sr, just don't get it too hot or it may damage the paint.

I'm removing the boot vinyl as boot is being repainted so glass is out and spoiler off so wonder what's the best way as I've got that lovely job tomorrow :)
Hairdryer would be more gentle.

The rear panel started to go so desided to just cut the whole skin off and replace with a next genuine one I had and getting everything painted that I didn't get last time :)

I spent ages removing my GSi boot vinyl, heat gun/hairdryer. It's not the ultimate heat you need, go too hot & it tears off into tiny pieces & then the glue gets real messy.
Just experiment until you get the technique spot on where the vinyl still retains a bit of strength but peels away. A plastic scraper (nectar card) will help with removal too. As said, some tar remover/solvent or caramel wheel will help get teh gluse residue off.
