Right,

I seem to have a problem putting an inner CV joint back together.

I have replaced the driveshaft and have tapped down the tripod spider part and put the circlip back on the end of the driveshaft.

When I took the CV joint apart I just rived on the end and give it a good tug and a waggle and it seemed to pop out.

Now when I try to get it back it its just not having it. I don't want to beat down with a hammer as this will probably just shatter the bearing parts.

Any ideas on what to do......

For piece of mind I would stick a new one on.

imagine getting it back together on the car after all your hard work to find it fail on the test drive. Fiik it put a new one on.:)

To use the new shaft (which is shorter) you have to take the tripod part out of the inner CV to get to the circlip on the end of the shaft, so if I get a new one, I'm still stuck with the problem of stripping and reassembly.

Fantastic design !

Once they are apart it scrap.

They are the case is heated hugely then the bearings are cooled beaten down. (see the heat marks) So they are a proper tight fit.
Once out, with out beating the pedos out of it. You wont get it back. If you do it might pop again.

Get a replacement.

If you have to do it that way like you said maby you can put it in a vice and another over the top to pickup the 3rd bearing then heat the outer case up and press the barring in or a bearing press if you can get one

I had one out then back in the other day (corsa C 12v short shaft).

Can you get it in with the shaft off then push the shaft in after.

looks like the tabs are bent over on the top. id be inclined to file them till it goes in then bend them back. the bearings should never be out that far again anyway

If you read it the clip is on the inside as it's shorter so it has to be assembled this way

Mk4 Astra inner long shaft by any chance?? My sisters CV boot failed on her Astra coupe turbo, her inner CV was a GM original and of the same design - however there was no pinching tabs at the end of he CV outer casing, instead it has a securing clip that hugged the outside of the CV outer casing. You simply popped off the clip and the inner race slides out, new cv boot, race back in and clip back on.

I'd say this is an aftermarket jobby and in your case I would simply remove the pinching tabs with a file, insert the inner race and leave it.

Remember that the inner race will never under normal circumstances come out enough to exit the outer casing, the tabs are simply there for when you remove the shaft assembly... but a good cv boot and clips will hold it all together anyways.
