View Full Version : fwd to rwd nova
some might all ready know that i am building a c20let trackday nova. since i started building it i have always kept the option of going rwd. i have all ready built a mid engined nova so i know of the fabrication work involved and time.
my main concern is how to get a steering rack mounted and working. i was thinking of using a c20let with omega R28 box. will this use the c20let clutch? as i have a new 4 paddle clutch for a f20 box.
to mount the engine/box then make a tunnel wouldn't be a problem. for the back a solid back axle would be the handiest to mount but what other options would there be for independent suspension. omega. bmw, mazda mx5?
i just want to get some ideas going.
MX5 track is similar, so might be able to use the rack...
Or how about use a Vx220/Elise rack and 'just' fab the bits to link the column to rack which would be mounted on the front slam?

Retropower can supply a spacer plate for the concentric clutch slave cylinder which will allow the use of your C20LET clutch and flywheel. The F20 clutch will not work as the splines are different.
You will need to use a different rack and move it in front of the hubs underneath the front of the sump rather than behind the hub and up high, I can't help you with what models to go for and using your Nova one will make the steering back to front (you steer left and the wheels turn right), using a LHD Nova rack mounted in front would correct this - I have one here if you are interested.
Cut and weld the Nova hubs to work with said rack, shave down some outer CV joints to use as stub axles (to hold the bearing together), then the rest of the front suspension is used as normal
Could you not just swap the left and right uprights over and run them backwards to get the track rods on the front? Or are the uprights made in a way to prevent this..

No you could but your ackermann angles would be all messed up
what sort of power can the mx5 back end handle? it could be possile to use a mazda mx5 chassis the measurements are close enough. its around 80mm wider each side than a nova so should fill out the wide arches i have.

Always liked the idea and looked into it myself, I'd run a ford type 9 box with c20let adapter plate and escort prop with Anglia 105e axle. Everything is quite available and have lots of performance parts too
The type 9 box would be another good option. could also upgrade to a quaife straight cut box then in the future.
this is what i have to work off. wide arch kit. cage fitted and shell stitch welded. new front crossmember and 2 new sills. i am in no rush to get this done so want to do it the best way i can.

Interesting to see what you end up doing with this jonn. There are just so many different ways that you can go!
A nice thing about the mx5 route too is that they retain 4x100 so can run vaux wheels to help it look original. I'm sure with your fab skills you could modify the rear subframe to hold a different diff.

What about a mk2 escort xmember and quick rack, the eng mounts are also on the x member
