View Full Version : 1988 Vauxhall Nova 1.3 SR
It had to happen didn't it...!
I was looking for a long time for different cars, a modified Nova, a Sport, a whatever, but I initially wanted to buy one already done.
After looking at a few, the knowledge of the unknown kept me from buying a modified (done) one.
So maybe a project was what I needed, a random spot on Facebook by a mate of mine led to looking at an advert for a car literally 25 miles from home. This is after travelling the combined distance of nearing 1500 miles to look at other Novas!
The ad, it looked clean but Nova's aren't ever as clean as they look are they....
I turned up, looked once briefly during work one day, then went back with my mate to look further. 90mins later after looking and looking, this happened, it turns up in my garage!
So here we go...
A 1988 Nova 1.3 SR
83,000 miles from new.
2 Previous owners, first one for 26 years (i.e. this year). Story goes (the one we all want to find) the chap pulled into a doctors surgery where a young mechanic spots a tidy Nova, he asks would you sell it, and the chap says well the clutch is on its way out and I guess I could....said mechanic buys it, replaces clutch along with a full service, then I come along. This car has never left Devon ownership after being registered at Skippers Torquay - and I hope nor will it.
It has had some arches in the past, but other than that its original and very very tidy, and never structurally welded.
Full VSH up until 76,000 and a whole wedge since.
It's going to have a full resto/freshen up, that way I know it will be done right and not hiding anything. Some more photos will of course follow....!
Edit, some proper photos!

Patience IS a virtue ;) good find though.
So the Nova is tucked up in the garage at the moment so i've taken some time to go through the history (will file and date later on).
But we have a full manual with all Vauxhall Brochures from new i think?
Insurance, Stamped SH book, Skipper from Torbay original receipt, Sureguard Warranty (it's covered in brown stuff!), Vauxhall Warranty, hand written first insurance policy from 1988, etc..

Zero previous owners logbook (before they changed to the new type...!)
Massive stack of receipts mostly Vauxhall, including one for the rear arches of £257! Shame I don't think they'll be that cheap this time....!

More to come....!

Might be best to get rid of the logbook picture showing the address of someone ;)
Edit: done it for you, best to maybe Photoshop the info out ;)

Nice find simon,
Have you much work to do to it to get it to your standard?
What's the plans
Twin 40s etc
Stu
Stu! There's not much mate, I'll show the scars at another time but loosely two arches, and a wing. It's near as good as the grey one was I think, but with better history!
I want to lose the remaining vinyl as paint will last longer!!
Plans;
T40s
Head work
Cam
Exhaust
Suspension of some sort!
Full paint
Paint underside and inner arches.
Namely by billing next year!
Sounds like a good plan si
I'll be watching your progress
I keep meaning to start a project thread on my
F reg SR but always sort on time!
Wow that does look like tidy nice history too and plans so just perfect best of luck with it
Pleased you finally got one again mate
Looks good
Nice to have another down here as well lol

Looks a great base - nice find!
Had the opportunity in the F1 delay today to tick the Nova over and took the opportunity to take some more photos for perusal.
The car as i've said is very clean but it's not mint mint, but then I didn't pay anywhere near that sort of price.
The brown stuff is mainly very old sure guard, which thankfully seems to have kept it right til this day.

The drivers turret shows some surface rust, and lots of brown staining! There's no rot there, in fact I've yet to see any rot on the car anywhere yet, outside of rear arches!

Boot is mint, but has some chips on the leading edge which means i'll need to paint it sadly, meaning I will need a new graphic, any experience of the eBay graphics anyone?

Til next time....
So after Billing I really wanted to get the SR out, it actually wasn't insured until today, but with Tax and MOT seemed a shame not to use it over summer!
So a spick and span wash showed it like this;
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h73/syep2001/Nova%20SR/95E3078D-49A1-4733-91BB-32BFAE898EBA_zpszvaopia2.jpg (http://s61.photobucket.com/user/syep2001/media/Nova%20SR/95E3078D-49A1-4733-91BB-32BFAE898EBA_zpszvaopia2.jpg.html)
Another sign of the matter of how well looked after its been, all 4 tyres are original specification Michelins, no crap was put on this one....!
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h73/syep2001/Nova%20SR/B45BB820-B9DE-470E-9B56-C98EF04D5EAE_zpsfezzc5en.jpg (http://s61.photobucket.com/user/syep2001/media/Nova%20SR/B45BB820-B9DE-470E-9B56-C98EF04D5EAE_zpsfezzc5en.jpg.html)
And the less pretty bits....
New wing then;

Spent some time on the interior, the outside had a mere wash as its being painted I didn't see the point in extra effort...its quite good, need a drivers bolster, going to try and procure a passenger seat...a wet vac and I think it'll be fine, the velour still has pile in it.

More to come, think i've decided to use it as it is now til the end of summer when it'll come off the road and visit the body shop. He was there at Billing so I showed him Nick J's old one and said I want that....! I'll try, but it'll never do as well as that i'm sure..!

I hope not. I've no reason to sell this, I have a double garage now, it's a good car! But granted my reputation precedes me lol!
Thanks for the update on the vinyl I think I'll buy one and try it against standard to see if I'm happy with it.
Nova was spotted at a recent classic show by a couple friend - few photos.
It's in storage at the moment whilst I'm moving house! But once I've moved hopefully in October it'll go out to the body shop from there.
Few photos of it how it is now;

Need to start collecting some parts!
Shame you are so far away I know of a very clean set of SR bolsters, the actually seats had been recovered over the top but the original material is still underneath and pretty damn clean.
Nice little car mate :)
Update....
Motivation needed;

Thought this thread deserved an update, as this year it will receive many...!
Sadly the SR project was stalled as I moved house, the plan of October 14 and onto the body shop didn't quite pan out. The house I had bought fell through, and I had to buy another which needed fully restoring!! I'm done now, so it's been stored up over the past 12 months. But 2016 brings the work on the Nova to start.
It had a friend for a few days in the shape of my Dad's 94' Mini Cooper.

Also have another parcel shelf for speakers rather than cutting my own.
I've also bought which i've not photos of yet as they need restoring;
Bilstein Big Piston Front Shocks
Full Stainless Steel Magnex
Goodridge Braided hoses
2 sets of Alloys
I've also acquired a brand new GM front panel and rear panel skin, and a passenger seat cover for the material to repair my drivers bolster.
Need to get the rest of my panels (arches, back sills, and a wing) and it'll be off to the body shop finally around Easter!
Til then, I need a passenger Mk1 wing if anyone has one?
Also i've been building up some magazine cuttings, and general Vauxhall bits to add to the rest of the history my car has in abundance.
I wrote a letter including the photos of the Nova at my local Classic Car Show to the original owners as I had their contact details from the history (I didn't need a V888 as it has only 2 previous).
Their response was nice and something to add to the folder;

I'll look for it but someone else who has the EPC may find it quicker.

Nice update Simon. Looking forward to seeing the next installment.
Rainy Saturday afternoon brought the temptation to spend it in the garage rather than the sofa.
Started cleaning up my carbs.

Split them down and started cleaning up the manifold. The Irmscher casting is quite rough so actually quite happy with how clean it's come up.

Keep up the good work & yes do run a filter; you wouldn't believe the damage sucking in random bits of rubber does just from road use.

The yellow coat you see is a filler primer, I intend to rub back through this now, then grey primer, colour and lots of lacquer.
Til next time.
So I haven't been doing much on the Nova, but I have been spending ludicrous amounts of money on my other one...
I've had this coming up six years now, and in that long term time i've been saving to do a Supercharger conversion which in the last few weeks has been completed!
It's now approx 250bhp from 150bhp. Makes quite a difference with an addictive engine note!
I'll leave some pictures for you all to peruse.

Thanks.
Looking good Simon, bet it sounds like a beast charged up !!
Fantastic photos!
Looks very nice and boosted.
Thanks Benn, it does come up well. I amazingly don't think i've ever taken proper SLR photos since I have owned it, felt quite cool spending the day cleaning it up and going out for some shots! Always used to do so with the Nova!
Nova;
I've had 4 rear arches delivered now, a pair of sills and a pair of wings although they weren't as good as thought so these will be moved on and i'll end up with new ones I think.
Bilsteins have been painted and need to have another coat and then some lacquer. More photo updates when I get all my bits together. Still hoping over the end of Spring/Summer for it to go off for panel work, it won't make Billing though which was my original plan.
:(
So Billing has come and gone, and I still didn't manage to make it in the Nova!
But, success, other than SR boot vinyl and B pillar vinyl I have all the parts I want/need to rebuild it!
Some photos for perusal.
Mk2 Boot Trim - needs some mods to fit a Mk1, but always think they finish the boot nicely.

The parts pile...!
New here are; Irmscher Air Box, Eibach Lowering Springs (should make near the ultimate ride!), New front calipers, discs and pads. Arch carpets. Panels.

Saving for panel work next...hoping something around September/October, with paint to follow.
Love the pic of it all laided out.
Wow a long time has passed since is last updated my thread. I've put some pictures on Facebook though.
I've also been continuing to buy parts, smaller stuff of late.

Rear panel is very good, but for a little bit by the seam to rear quarter, we're going to whizz this back, if not too bad cut out and repair it, if gone, i have a rear panel anyway.

Front panel has not rot at all that i've seen so far - it's even really clean in the box section.

Now the lesser good bits, the car is really quite good in most places, i have some small holes to sort in the rear arches, one of these was hidden by a big chunk of mud so i can guess easily where the rest came from, seems the first owners may have liked a country trip!

It's now booked in to the body shop on the 27th February.
We're repairing all holes, cutting out necessary back to good metal, the inner arches front and back are getting wire wheeled back then re gravitexed and painted in body colour. Couple bits of gravitex to the underside to do (i'm going to do the underside at a later date due to space constraints).
Repair inner and outer arches, full paint too, more to come in time.

That will look fantastic freshened up, the soft stars work so well.
What are you doing with the lower half? Are you replacing the vinyl or having it painted?
Ian, I'm having it colour matched and painted in a matt/satin finish.
Great tidy shell, That will make a fantastic project and live some time.

Best way IMO. No point putting vinyl back on to trap water and rot behind again.
Love the soft stars si :)

Loving the car and engine/suspension plans, but personally I'd be keeping it as original as possible and the grooved disks and new wheels kind of spoil that for me.
Look forward to the pictures when she's out of the bodyshop!

Alastair, simple reason I have those brakes is that they are the biggest I can run behind the standard 3 spokes. I totally agree it needs to be fairly original - if you like I only ever intend on improving on standard.
Wheels can be changed, I personally love Nova's on 16s but will have the choice of both!

Oh the brake upgrade makes perfect sense, I'd just have plain disks if it were me!
Definitely and to each their own mate! You've made a lovely job of it!
So the car has made its few mile trip to a good friends new business. We're doing it on a bit part basis so the Nova doesn't take up space in his main booth. This helps keeps cost down for me and is helping build my friends business so it's a good decision for both of us.I took a Monday off work to take it down, involved running it up (started on the button pretty much!) and moving it outside where it saw a bit of rain for the first time in 2 odd years :(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h73/syep2001/Nova%20SR/IMG_9450_zpsyaapcwt6.jpg (http://s61.photobucket.com/user/syep2001/media/Nova%20SR/IMG_9450_zpsyaapcwt6.jpg.html)http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h73/syep2001/Nova%20SR/IMG_9452_zpstsylztcu.jpg (http://s61.photobucket.com/user/syep2001/media/Nova%20SR/IMG_9452_zpstsylztcu.jpg.html)http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h73/syep2001/Nova%20SR/IMG_9454_zpsveewwbeg.jpg (http://s61.photobucket.com/user/syep2001/media/Nova%20SR/IMG_9454_zpsveewwbeg.jpg.html)http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h73/syep2001/Nova%20SR/IMG_9455_zpsckcahssg.jpg (http://s61.photobucket.com/user/syep2001/media/Nova%20SR/IMG_9455_zpsckcahssg.jpg.html)

So it's had nearly all the welding done but not completely finished yet. The inner arches once welding done are being stripped - the single skin arches seam sealed then gravitexed and colour coded.
Hoping for some paint to be splashed on it towards the end of the month.
Not sure what's happened with the forum sorry for the text and photos being all over the place it wasn't when I wrote it!
Looking good Simon :thumb:

It will be interesting to see how the single skin rear arches last compared to the normal way.
Good work Nick
Our SR just a little further progressed. Your photos look so very familiar the work done on ours ( especially the holes/ welding).
Still looks great, totally standard rust places too. Good to see consistence in them.
It's back from the bodyshop! Have a massive update to do!
So;
The car has returned home.
But a bit of an update from where we were last time and a selection - but not all, as i've loads!
Single skin selfie lol.

And the car came home yesterday; i hadn't seen it until today.
The car needed a load of flatting and polishing as when i last saw it, the finish was only out of the gun.
I'm now really chuffed with the finish, couple minor bits to sort out in time - the bodyshop is an old friend of mine and the Nova was taking up space, so the last parts of the rebuild will happen here.

Looking good, your putting this back together quickly but taking care whilst you do it. Great to see the welds being protected, I can only imagine the amount of people that have had the arches done and not done this.:thumb:
