Hi guys, we're doing a long distance rally in an old nova and keeping the steel 13's on. What's the best upgrade I can do on the front brakes, with parts from the local motor factors?

Cheers?

ATE calipers from a low end corsa, which is 236*10 so they dont stick like the Delco ones do.
Then cheapy plain (no grooves or drilling or dimples) and Mintex 1144/1155 pads (Probably 55 pads as you are doing distance)
And Dot 5.1 brake fluid.

IMHO of course.

Cheers Stuart, does it matter what year corsa?

1995-1998ish to be sure you dont get vented ones... Although Venteds MIGHT fit.

I agree with Stuart, however vented disc models will fit if you add spacers to the front wheels

I run corsa b 1.4 sport calipers on my nova, they fit under my 13x6 revolutions. The discs are vented and feel better than my 2.0 bake setup on my other nova

I've got a 1988 Nova 1.2 Merit with standard 13" wheels and I would like to try this.Is this the correct one?

Is it a straight swap from the Delco to the standard corsa Ate calipers? Or is there any re-drilling/changes that need doing?
cheers

Straight swap mate

It needs different banjo bolts to the nova ones actually, that's it

Are these the ones that hold the calipers on the hub?
cheers

No the ones that hold the brake hose to the caliper

Ah right. Never heard them called that before! Must be a southern term.:)
thanks as am about to change my calipers over in the next week or so.
getting rid of those delcos.

Banjo bolts are the same unless you are replacing the flexi's as well.
Just need to replace the two washers on both sides

Thanks. The car is holed up in my garage, anyway so don't need to stress out, if they are different.
Once the calipers arrive I can have a good look.
will report back with the findings if anything different.

Has anyone any ideas why my new ATE calipers won't fit ?
ordered some TCA 1467/8 reconditioned ones and found that the piston part of caliper is too close to the driveshaft and I can't get near the bolts that hold here on.
many moons ago I upgraded my solid discs to vents and got hold of some(was told GTE) bridging bits to allow for the vented disc set up.

thinking I just needed the GTE replacements it seems they don't fit....
did they change the hub set up or am I missing something?

thanks in anticipation.

I'm lost, what is it catching on?

Jonesfach

It is hitting the driveshaft at the back of the hub, so won't get near the holes to bolt it on???

You haven't bolted the carrier on?

You have no carriers, they come seperately to the caliper body. When purchasing exchange ones, you only get the body. You will have to get the carriers from a scrapyard

Thanks for the replies lads.
what I am after will be knocking around on most vauxhall early nineties type cars? Astra eetch thought I must be missing something.....
I will ask dave the scrap if he has any ??:)

I think you are right on this as my banjo bolt went very tight as if wrong thread so will get some of these same time as carriers if possible.
thanks

You should have two parts to the caliper like this...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/NovaSport/20140619_213502_zpsc9137624.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/NovaSport/media/20140619_213502_zpsc9137624.jpg.html)

The caliper body & carrier(These are GTE 16v so slightly bigger but same setup)

Are your calipers for vented or solid discs? Corsa B and Astra Mk3 will have the carriers you need.

Thanks for the pic. Most helpful seems I need the other halves.....

on the lookout now for some. Seems to be a few about but not many pairs. 871 seems to be the right number I am looking for.

out of interest what wheel size are you running with the GTE 16v ones?

Novasport

6x14" RFX's and they are a tight fit.

Phew that is close!

Is it common for everyone to remove the splash guard that sits behind the disc?

please?

some do, some dont.
if your sticking with 236mm, and just upgrading, i think youll probably be fine for space. ive heard some people bend them backwards a bit to make space for 256. i usually ditch them myself, never had any problems with them not being there, altho brakes can get mighty hot when abused, and im sure the heatshields are put there for a reason, to keep surrounding things cooler, so your call.

if your on the hunt for ATE carriers in a breakers yard, id recommend taking a tape measure with you, and checking the disc size, to see which are 236, and 256mm. i believe the 48/20 calipers are the same for both sets of brakes, youll just need either set of the carriers, whichever you decide to go for.

i cant tell from your pic, but if you havent got them already, grab the anti-vibration springs from the breakers yard while your there :thumb:

minimum wheel size for the 256 brakes is 14" x 5.5" (just incase youre running smaller)

Thanks for your comments. Most helpful.
i have got 15 years or so catching up to do and tbh, without the help on this site, I would find it a great deal harder.
and probably just leave things as they were with the original delcos. This would leave me stranded somewhere with extremley hot brakes.

Hi going to be running 14"s and would have gone up to 256mm probably if I had known a bit more, but got most of parts now. So 236 it is....
